Sydney arranges itself around one of the world’s great harbours, and most of what you’ll want to see either sits on the water or looks out over it. What follows is how I’d spend a first few days, honestly, with the places that reward the time. Much of the best of Sydney is free — the walks, the beaches, the ferries — while the ticketed experiences are easy to arrange ahead: tours and attraction tickets on Klook and self-guided entry tickets on Tiqets cover several of the headline sights.

The harbour: Opera House and Bridge

Start where the city does, at Circular Quay, with the Sydney Opera House on one side and the Harbour Bridge on the other. The Opera House rewards more than a photo — a guided interior tour is genuinely worthwhile — and the Bridge can be walked for free across its pedestrian path, climbed to the Pylon Lookout, or, for the bold, scaled on the famous BridgeClimb. Even just standing at the Quay as the ferries come and go is one of the world’s great city views.

The Rocks and the Botanic Garden

Behind the Quay, The Rocks is Sydney’s oldest quarter — narrow lanes, colonial sandstone, pubs, and weekend markets, a short and atmospheric wander. In the other direction, the Royal Botanic Garden curves around the harbour’s edge to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, the classic spot for the Opera-House-and-Bridge photo together. It’s free, green, and one of the loveliest walks in the city.

Bondi and the coastal walk

No first visit is complete without Bondi Beach, but the real reward is the Bondi-to-Coogee coastal walk — an easy few kilometres along the cliffs past a string of beaches and rock pools, including the photogenic Icebergs ocean pool. Do it in the morning, bring water, and stop for a swim. It costs nothing and is, for many people, the best thing they do in Sydney.

Manly, by ferry

Combine transport and sightseeing by taking the Manly ferry from Circular Quay — a spectacular half-hour across the harbour — to a relaxed beach suburb with an ocean surf beach on one side and calm harbour beaches on the other. The short Manly to Shelly Beach walk is a gentle bonus. It makes an easy, breezy half-day.

Darling Harbour and the zoo

West of the centre, Darling Harbour is the family-friendly waterfront, home to the aquarium and museums and a pleasant evening stroll. Across the water, Taronga Zoo — reached, of course, by ferry — has animals with a harbour-and-skyline backdrop that’s worth the trip in itself. Both are easy to book tickets for on Klook ahead of time.

How to hold a first visit

Anchor each day on the harbour and let the rest follow: a day around Circular Quay, the Opera House, and The Rocks; a day on the coast at Bondi and the cliff walk; a ferry day to Manly or the zoo; and time left over to wander. For how to move between it all, see our Getting Around Sydney guide, and for the wider trip, the first-timer’s guide to Sydney. Opening hours and ticket prices shift, so confirm the specifics close to your visit — but the harbour, happily, is free every day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free thing to do in Sydney?

The Bondi-to-Coogee coastal walk — an easy few kilometres along the cliffs past a string of beaches and rock pools. Do it in the morning, bring water, and stop for a swim. The harbour ferries and the Royal Botanic Garden are also free and among the city's best experiences.

Is a tour of the Sydney Opera House worth it?

Yes — a guided interior tour rewards more than a photo from outside, taking you into the concert halls and behind the famous sails. It is easy to book ahead, and pairs naturally with a wander around Circular Quay and The Rocks.

How do I get to Manly and is it worth it?

Take the Manly ferry from Circular Quay — a spectacular half-hour across the harbour at a normal fare. Manly has an ocean surf beach and calm harbour beaches, plus the gentle Manly-to-Shelly-Beach walk, making an easy half-day.

Where is the classic photo of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge together?

Mrs Macquarie's Chair, at the harbour edge of the Royal Botanic Garden, is the classic spot to frame the Opera House and the Bridge in one shot. It is free and a lovely walk from Circular Quay.
