Melbourne hides its pleasures rather than parading them — down laneways, inside galleries, along the bay — so the trick to a first visit is to slow down and let the city reveal itself. What follows is how I’d spend a few days, honestly. Much of the best of it is free to wander; the ticketed sights and the big day trips are simplest to book on Klook or the Asia-strong KKday, and self-guided gallery and attraction tickets on Tiqets cover several highlights.

The laneways and street art

Start in the CBD laneways, the heart of Melbourne’s character — a maze of alleys threaded with cafés, tiny bars, and some of the world’s best street art. Hosier Lane is the famous one, its walls a constantly changing gallery; Degraves Street and the arcades nearby are all coffee and small shops. This is a walk, not a ticket — just wander, look up, and follow the good coffee smell.

Federation Square and the river

Federation Square, the modern civic heart, sits where the grid meets the Yarra River, and the riverside walk from here past Southbank is one of the loveliest strolls in the city, especially in the evening. It’s also the gateway to the arts precinct.

The NGV and the gardens

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is the country’s oldest and most-visited gallery, split across two sites, and free to enter for the permanent collection — a genuine highlight. Nearby, the Royal Botanic Gardens roll down toward the river, a beautiful place to reset for an hour or a picnic.

Queen Victoria Market

The sprawling Queen Victoria Market is a Melbourne institution — produce, deli halls, street food, and a summer night market — and a great place to graze and feel the city’s multicultural pulse. Go hungry, and early if you can.

St Kilda and the bay

Out on the bay, St Kilda brings a faded-seaside charm: the beach and pier, the old Luna Park, and — a lovely free surprise — a colony of little penguins that comes ashore on the breakwater at dusk. The Esplanade and its cafés make an easy half-day, best rounded off with a bayside sunset.

Sport, and a big day out

Melbourne is a sport city, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is close to sacred; a tour, or a match if the season suits, is a real window into the culture. And when you have a full day, the Great Ocean Road — the dramatic coastal drive to the Twelve Apostles — is the region’s headline outing, easily done as a guided day tour if you’d rather not hire a car.

How to hold a first visit

Give each day a loose anchor — the laneways and river, the market and galleries, St Kilda and the bay — and leave room to sit in a café and watch the city go by, which is, after all, the local pastime. For getting between it, see our Getting Around Melbourne guide and the first-timer’s guide to Melbourne. Opening hours and prices shift, so confirm the specifics close to your visit.
