Keukenhof sits in Lisse, in the Dutch bulb region, and Keukenhof’s own public-transport advice is a seasonal direct bus. That one fact decides where you should sleep: which bus you can catch from your hotel matters more than how pretty the hotel is. The bill has its own quirks too. Amsterdam charges a tourist tax of 12.5% of the room price, the towns around the gardens charge a fixed amount per person per night, and every hotel room in the country now carries 21% VAT.
Keukenhof says it is open from Thursday 18 March to Sunday 9 May 2027, every day from 8:00 to 19:00. This guide covers those dates, five bases weighed by the bus and train time to the gardens (Lisse and Noordwijk, Leiden, Haarlem, Amsterdam and Hoofddorp near Schiphol), 12 hotels, the municipal tourist taxes and the rail fares. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.
The short answer
| If you want… | Stay in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| to be in the village the garden belongs to | Lisse and Noordwijk | The gardens are in Lisse itself, but the bus lines we found do not start here, so plan a car, taxi or bicycle |
| the best bus link | Leiden | Line 854 ran up to 6 times an hour from Leiden Centraal in 2026, in about 30 minutes |
| a direct bus from a historic town | Haarlem | Line 850 ran twice an hour in 2026, in about 40 minutes |
| the city first, tulips as a day trip | Amsterdam centre | Line 852 ran up to 10 times an hour from the RAI, and Centraal is about 15 minutes from the RAI |
| an early flight or late landing | Hoofddorp, near Schiphol | Line 859 starts at Hoofddorp station; there is no Keukenhof bus from Schiphol itself |
When to go: the 2027 season
Keukenhof’s own website gives the 2027 season as 18 March to 9 May, open daily from 8:00 to 19:00, with entry closing at 18:15. For comparison, the 2026 season ran from 19 March to 10 May, and Keukenhof said it had received more than 1.4 million visitors that season.
Keukenhof does not name a best week. It says bloom depends on the weather, with early-flowering bulbs at the start of the season and the larger tulips later, and it publishes a bloom report during the season. Book a refundable room until your tickets are fixed. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027, inside the season, so expect that weekend to be busy.
Three rules from Keukenhof’s FAQ affect where you sleep:
- Tickets are for a time slot. They are valid only during the slot you booked, and online tickets can be rescheduled up to 24 hours before if the new slot has room.
- Early and late are quieter. Keukenhof says the park is less crowded before 10:30 or after 16:00, so a hotel that gets you to the gate for 8:00 is worth something.
- Prices vary by day. The ticket page says the price depends on the day and the type of ticket. It lists an adult ticket at €21.00 online and €27.00 at the ticket window, but does not say which season those prices belong to; combination tickets with transport are shown as available from mid-January.
Taxes on a Dutch hotel bill
Two kinds of charge sit on top of the room rate. VAT on accommodation has been 21% since 1 January 2026, by the Belastingdienst. The tourist tax (toeristenbelasting) is set by each municipality, and the gardens, Amsterdam and the other bases all use different rules. These are the 2026 rates; we did not find 2027 rates published, so check before you book.
| Municipality | Where it matters | 2026 tourist tax |
|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam | Amsterdam centre | 12.5% of the overnight price, excluding VAT |
| Haarlem | Haarlem | €6.20 a person a night (hostels €4.00) |
| Leiden | Leiden | €4.70 a person a night |
| Lisse | Lisse, and Keukenhof itself | €4.00 a person a night (campsites €3.15) |
| Noordwijk | Noordwijk aan Zee | €2.58 a person a night (tourist pitches €1.80) |
| Haarlemmermeer | Hoofddorp and Schiphol-Rijk | 6.92% of the accommodation fee charged |
A worked example (our arithmetic): two adults, three nights, a room at €150 a night before VAT.
- In Amsterdam, VAT adds €31.50 and the tourist tax €18.75 a night, so a night costs €200.25 and three nights €600.75, of which €169.50 is tax.
- In Haarlem, the tourist tax is €6.20 × 2 × 3 = €37.20 for the stay; in Leiden €28.20; in Lisse €24.00; in Noordwijk €15.48. VAT of €94.50 comes on top in each.
- In Haarlemmermeer the tax is 6.92% of the fee charged, which comes to roughly €31 to €38 for the stay depending on whether the hotel counts the fee before or after VAT. Ask the hotel which.
Getting to Keukenhof, and between bases
The bus. Keukenhof says you reach the park by public transport on its direct KeukenhofBuzz lines, with no stops in between, and that a combination ticket covers admission and the day’s public transport. The operator’s pages for the 2026 season, run by Qbuzz, give the lines below. The 2027 timetable and prices were not published when we checked, so read this table as last year’s picture.
| Line | Boards at | 2026 frequency | 2026 ride |
|---|---|---|---|
| 854 | Leiden Centraal | up to 6 an hour | about 30 minutes |
| 850 | Haarlem station | twice an hour | about 40 minutes |
| 852 | Amsterdam RAI (Europaplein) | up to 10 an hour | about 35 minutes |
| 859 | Hoofddorp station | not listed on the pages we read | not listed |
In 2026 there was no bus from Schiphol Airport: Qbuzz said that, because of works at the airport, departure from Schiphol would not be possible for the next two years. We found no bus line that starts in Lisse or Noordwijk.
Combination tickets, 2026. From Amsterdam RAI the combination of admission and the KeukenhofBuzz cost €38.50 for an adult; from Haarlem or Leiden it was €33.50, and a child’s was €17.50. A separate return bus ticket was €18.20 from the RAI and €12.80 from Haarlem or Leiden. Qbuzz also listed a train, bus and admission ticket sold through NS from €42.50, depending on the boarding station. By car, Keukenhof lists parking at €10.00 online or €15.00 at the ticket window.
NS trains. These are NS journey-planner results for a single in second class at full fare, for Friday 30 October 2026; fares and times for spring 2027 may differ.
| Journey | Time | Single |
|---|---|---|
| Schiphol to Leiden Centraal (direct Intercity) | 17 minutes | €7.80 |
| Haarlem to Leiden Centraal (Intercity) | 20 minutes | €7.80 |
| Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem | 19 minutes | €5.50 |
| Amsterdam Centraal to Leiden Centraal (Intercity) | 37 minutes | €12.00 |
| Schiphol to Hoofddorp | 4 minutes | €3.00 |
NS adds a €1.60 surcharge for a single-use smartcard on single tickets, which you avoid by paying with a contactless bank card or phone. For the airport leg into Amsterdam itself, see where to stay in Amsterdam.
Our arithmetic on riding time, with no waiting added: from a Leiden hotel the bus is about 30 minutes; from Haarlem 40; from Amsterdam centre about 15 minutes to the RAI plus 35 on the bus, so about 50; from Schiphol 17 by train to Leiden plus 30 on the bus, so about 47.
Lisse and Noordwijk: the village, the dunes and the seaside
Keukenhof’s address is Stationsweg 166a in Lisse, so a hotel in Lisse is as close as you can get. The catch is transport: none of the KeukenhofBuzz lines we found boards in Lisse or Noordwijk, so this base suits people with a car (parking at the gardens is €10.00 online), a bicycle or a taxi. Choose it for an 8:00 arrival without a transfer. The tax here is the lowest of the bases, €4.00 a person a night in Lisse and €2.58 in Noordwijk.
Where to stay in Lisse and Noordwijk
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Hotel De Duif, good value. A hotel on the Westerdreef in Lisse whose rooms run from the Souterrain Budget Twin and Economy Twin through Comfort and Superior doubles to a Duplex Suite and a one-bedroom apartment for up to six, with a 5% discount for booking direct. Choose it for the cheapest sleep in the village. Watch out: the site publishes no distance to Keukenhof, so check the route before you rely on walking. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Lowietje Lisse, good value. A hotel at Heereweg 10 in Lisse run on a digital, flexible-payment model, with Comfort Double, Superior Double and Superior Triple rooms and the same 5% direct-booking discount. Choose it for a simple room, or a triple for a small family. Watch out: it is a sister hotel to De Duif, so the two may sell out together. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin, splurge. The grand seaside hotel on the highest dune in Noordwijk, at Koningin Astrid Boulevard 5, with eight room types from the Charming Room to the Imperial Suite and penthouses, three restaurants, a spa and bike rental. Choose it to pair the bulb fields with the sea. Watch out: it is a drive or a long taxi ride from the gardens, and we found no bus to Keukenhof from Noordwijk. Check rates on Booking.com →
Leiden: the strongest bus link
Leiden has a direct Intercity from Schiphol in 17 minutes and, in 2026, a Keukenhof bus up to six times an hour: line 854 from Leiden Centraal. The tourist tax is €4.70 a person a night.
Where to stay in Leiden
- Golden Tulip Leiden Centre, comfortable. A hotel at Schipholweg 3, positioned opposite Leiden Central Station, with Comfort Rooms of 23 m² and Executive Rooms of 25 m², and a restaurant and bar on site. Choose it to be at the bus-and-train end of town on the morning you have a tight slot. Watch out: it is on the station side, so the canals are a walk away. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Boutique Hotel d’Oude Morsch, comfortable. A hotel of 18 rooms, each with its own layout, in the former guard building of the Morspoort Barracks, dated 1817, looking over a city park, a windmill and the Morspoort gate, with a parking garage across the street. Choose it for the old edge of the centre. Watch out: reception and lobby are open daily until 21:00, so tell the hotel if you will arrive later.
Haarlem: a historic town with its own bus
Haarlem is 19 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal by NS (€5.50 single) and, in 2026, had its own direct Keukenhof line, 850, twice an hour, in about 40 minutes. That is slower and less frequent than Leiden’s line, so book your slot with the bus in mind. The tourist tax is €6.20 a person a night.
Where to stay in Haarlem
- Hotel Lion d’Or, comfortable. Haarlem’s oldest surviving city hotel, begun in 1839 as a tavern, with four stars, 56 rooms, the station round the corner, ten parking spaces on its own ground and a free bicycle garage. Choose it for the walk to the station and the bus. Watch out: breakfast is a buffet at €17.50 a person, and parking spaces are few.
- Amrâth Grand Hotel Frans Hals, comfortable. An 82-room hotel at Damstraat 10 in the city centre, with an extensive breakfast buffet and check-in from 14:00. Choose it to be inside the old town. Watch out: the hotel’s site gives no distance to the station; Booking.com lists 900 metres on foot, so allow for the walk to the bus. Check rates on Booking.com →
Amsterdam: the city first, the tulips on a day trip
If the trip is mostly Amsterdam, stay there and treat Keukenhof as a day out. In 2026 line 852 left from the RAI, about 15 minutes from Centraal by NS’s planner; the alternative is the 37-minute Intercity to Leiden and the 854 bus. Both routes take about an hour each way. Amsterdam is also where the tax is highest, 12.5% of the price before VAT. For the districts and the airport links in detail, see where to stay in Amsterdam.
Where to stay in Amsterdam
- NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace, comfortable. 268 rooms spread over six floors in a row of 17th-century houses, opposite Amsterdam Central Station, with indoor parking at €70 a day. Choose it for the train at the door. Watch out: the hotel’s own parking price, €70 a day, makes a car here a poor idea. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Sint Nicolaas, good value. A small hotel at Spuistraat 1a with a 24-hour reception and, by its own count, a two-minute walk to Centraal; doubles are 21 m², twins 19 m², small doubles 16 m² and singles 15 m². Choose it for the cheapest base beside the station. Watch out: rooms are compact, so check the size of the type you are booking. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Okura Amsterdam, splurge. A Japanese-owned hotel at Ferdinand Bolstraat 333, south of the centre, whose site gives a nearby metro station and a 15-minute drive to Schiphol, with a two-Michelin-star restaurant, Ciel Bleu, and a one-star one, Yamazato. Choose it for a quiet base away from the canal crowds. Watch out: it publishes no room sizes or distance to the RAI, so check the route. Check rates on Booking.com →
Hoofddorp and Schiphol: for early flights and late landings
A hotel by Schiphol makes sense when your flight is at dawn or lands after dark. Be careful with the Keukenhof leg, though: in 2026 there was no bus from Schiphol, and the nearest boarding point was Hoofddorp station, line 859; the station is four minutes from Schiphol by train (€3.00 single). Hoofddorp sits in Haarlemmermeer, where the tourist tax is 6.92% of the fee charged.
Where to stay in Hoofddorp
- The Florian, comfortable. A hotel at Kruisweg 609 in Hoofddorp that says bus 397 from Schiphol platform D takes six minutes to its stop, with underground parking at €15 a night, 24-hour bus connections to Schiphol and central Amsterdam and check-in from 14:00. Choose it for a bed close to the terminal without a terminal price. Watch out: breakfast is not included by default, and the site gives no distance to Hoofddorp station. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Radisson Hotel Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Hoofddorp, comfortable. A new hotel at Siriusdreef 22, in a business park, with single rooms of 18 m², standard rooms of 21 m², superior rooms of 27 m² and executive rooms of 32 m². Choose it for a modern room by the airport. Watch out: it is a business-park location, and the page we read does not give a walking time to the station.
How to book Keukenhof and a bed
- Count the tax. Amsterdam adds 12.5% before VAT; the others charge per person, so a family of four pays more per night than a couple.
- Choose the bus first. Pick the base whose line suits you, then book the slot; Keukenhof’s tickets are for a time slot.
- Hold a refundable room until tickets are fixed. Keukenhof’s combination tickets were not on sale when we checked.
- Check room size. The sizes the hotels publish above are a guide; Dutch canal-house rooms are often small.
- Compare the total. Use the price with VAT and tax, not the headline rate; see our comparison of hotel booking sites and the tourist-tax data report.
