How we work

Corrections

When we get a fact wrong, we fix the guide and record it here: the date, what we said and what is true.

Travel rules and prices change constantly, and sometimes we simply get something wrong. A public log lets you judge how often that happens and how we deal with it. Newest first. It is part of our promise.

2026

1 October: Our GetYourGuide links, on five tour-booking guides

What we said: that we had no relationship with GetYourGuide, or that it was not one of our affiliate partners.

What is true: since 28 September our links to GetYourGuide on these guides go through our partner Stay22, and we may earn a commission if you book through them. Each guide now says so. We still have no relationship with Viator.

Klook vs Viator vs GetYourGuide · Halong Bay cruises · Jeju bus tours · Sydney Harbour cruises · Tokyo food tours

29 September: The Wat Arun photo on our Bangkok dinner-cruise guide

What we said: in a photo caption, that the picture showed Wat Arun from the water.

What is true: it shows Wat Arun’s towers against the city, with no river in the frame. The caption now describes only what is in the photo.

Where to book a Bangkok dinner cruise

28 September: Osaka hotels for Kansai Airport

What we said: that the Swissôtel Nankai Osaka is the only Osaka hotel on a direct line to Kansai Airport.

What is true: it sits above Nankai’s Namba station, where the Nankai airport trains begin, but it is not the only one. Since March 2023 the Haruka airport express has also stopped at Osaka Station, so hotels by Osaka and Tennoji stations are on a direct line too.

Where to stay in Osaka

28 September: Hotel booking sites’ loyalty schemes

What we said: that Hotels.com Rewards gives one reward night for every 10 nights, and that Booking.com’s Genius gives 10% off after two stays.

What is true: Hotels.com’s scheme now depends on your country. US members have been on One Key since July 2023, which pays back a much smaller share; the UK moved back to Hotels.com Rewards in spring 2026, with £100 of Hotels.com Cash for every 10 eligible nights; Canada kept 10 nights for one reward night. Genius gives 10% off participating stays as soon as you sign in, and 10–15% after five bookings in two years.

Hotel booking sites compared

27 September: Tokyo to Kyoto by bus

What we said: that the bus costs roughly ¥4,000 to ¥10,000 one way.

What is true: the cheapest seats go lower. On Willer’s booking calendar in late September 2026 the cheapest seat was ¥2,100 on a weekday and ¥4,200 on a Saturday; weekend and premium seats cost more.

Tokyo to Kyoto: Shinkansen, flight or bus

27 September: Japan’s tourist taxes

What we said: that from 2026 the lodging taxes in Tokyo and Osaka also apply to licensed private lodging (minpaku).

What is true: Osaka’s already applied to it. Tokyo’s applies from 1 April 2027, when it also becomes 3% of the room rate on stays of ¥13,000 or more per person per night. The same guide had a photo caption about the tax rather than the photo; it now describes the photo.

23 September: Renting a boat in Spain

What we said: that in Spain you can rent a boat of under 15 HP without a licence.

What is true: from 1 October 2026, Real Decreto 1188/2025 limits that exemption to private use, so renters need at least the Licencia de Navegación. We also added the small-boat rules for Greece and Croatia.

How to charter a boat for a day

23 September: Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen

What we said: that the Nozomi takes 2.5 to 3 hours.

What is true: it takes about 2 hours 15 minutes.

Tokyo to Kyoto: Shinkansen, flight or bus

23 September: Publication dates

What was wrong: republishing a guide stamped that day as its first-publication date, so guides first published in June claimed September.

What is true: the original dates are restored, and a guide’s “Last updated” date now changes only when its content does.

11 September: Japan’s departure tax

What we said: that Japan’s departure tax is ¥1,000.

What is true: it rose to ¥3,000 per person from 1 July 2026, collected in the price of your ticket.
