Osaka has two centres, and most of the choice comes down to which one you want outside your door. Kita, the north, is Umeda and Osaka Station: towers, department stores and the trains to Kyoto, Kobe and the airport. Minami, the south, is Namba, Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori: the canal, the neon and the food Osaka is famous for. The Midosuji subway line joins them in about ten minutes, so neither is a wrong answer. They are just different evenings.
Kyoto, Osaka, or both? Where to stay in Japan on a first trip covers how many nights to give each, and moving day from Tokyo.
This guide compares those two with three other areas worth knowing, then names ten hotels across them, with the reason to pick each and the catch. They are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in September 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.
The short answer
| If you… | Stay in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| want food, nightlife and the Osaka of photographs | Namba, Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori | The canal, Kuromon Market and street food on foot; Nankai trains to Kansai Airport from Namba |
| want trains and day trips | Umeda and Osaka Station | JR to Kyoto and Kobe, the Haruka to Kansai Airport, Shin-Osaka’s Shinkansen one stop away |
| want calm between the two | Nakanoshima | A river island of museums and offices, quiet at night |
| want value and old Osaka | Tennoji and Shinsekai | Abeno Harukas, Tsutenkaku and kushikatsu, and lower room rates |
| are here for Universal Studios Japan | The bay | A short walk to the park gates |
One tax to know: since 1 September 2025, Osaka Prefecture’s accommodation tax is ¥200 per person per night on rooms from ¥5,000 to ¥14,999, ¥400 from ¥15,000 to ¥19,999, and ¥500 from ¥20,000, with rooms under ¥5,000 exempt. It is modest next to Kyoto’s, which rose sharply in March 2026, and is one more reason some travellers base in Osaka and visit Kyoto for the day (Osaka or Kyoto? weighs it up).
Namba, Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori: the food end
For a first trip built around eating, this is the base. Dotonbori’s canal and its signs, the Shinsaibashi-suji shopping arcade, Kuromon Market, and more small restaurants than you could try in a month are all on foot. Namba Station puts you on the Midosuji line north to Umeda and on Nankai trains straight to Kansai Airport. The trade-off is noise and crowds: this is Osaka’s busiest nightlife district, and it sounds like it.

Umeda and Osaka Station: the transport end
Umeda is where the trains are. JR Osaka Station has fast trains to Kyoto and Kobe, the Hankyu and Hanshin lines start here, and since March 2023 the Haruka airport express has stopped at the station’s new underground platforms, about 47 minutes from Kansai Airport. Shin-Osaka, where the Shinkansen stops, is one stop north. The area has been transformed by Grand Green Osaka, the new park-and-towers district beside the station, and it now has the city’s newest luxury hotels.
Where to stay in Umeda
- THE OSAKA STATION HOTEL, Autograph Collection, splurge. 418 rooms in the JP Tower, open since July 2024, with a direct connection to JR Osaka Station. Choose it to step from the platforms into your room. Check rates on Booking.com →

South of Minami, Tennoji has Abeno Harukas, Tennoji Park and the zoo, and next door Shinsekai has Tsutenkaku Tower and its streets of kushikatsu restaurants. Rooms are generally cheaper than in Minami, JR and the Midosuji line both stop at Tennoji, and the Haruka to Kansai Airport stops here too.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to stay in Namba or Umeda in Osaka?
Namba (with Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori) for food, nightlife and the Osaka of photographs, plus Nankai trains to Kansai Airport. Umeda for trains: JR to Kyoto and Kobe, the Haruka to the airport, and Shin-Osaka's Shinkansen one stop away. The Midosuji subway line links the two in about ten minutes.
What is the best area to stay in Osaka for first-timers?
Namba or Shinsaibashi for most first trips, since the food and nightlife Osaka is known for are on foot. Choose Umeda instead if you plan several day trips to Kyoto, Kobe or Nara.
How much is the accommodation tax in Osaka?
Since 1 September 2025, Osaka Prefecture charges ¥200 per person per night on rooms from ¥5,000 to ¥14,999, ¥400 from ¥15,000 to ¥19,999 and ¥500 from ¥20,000; rooms under ¥5,000 are exempt.
Does the Haruka stop at Osaka Station?
Yes. Since March 2023 the Haruka airport express has stopped at Osaka Station's new underground platforms in the Umekita area, about 47 minutes from Kansai Airport. It also stops at Tennoji and Shin-Osaka.
Where should I stay for Universal Studios Japan?
Beside the park if it is the main reason for the trip: The Park Front Hotel at Universal Studios Japan is less than a minute's walk from the entrance. The rest of Osaka is then a train ride away, so for a longer stay many people split their nights between the bay and the city.
Is Shinsekai a good area to stay in Osaka?
For value and character, yes. Shinsekai and neighbouring Tennoji have lower room rates, Tsutenkaku Tower and kushikatsu restaurants, and good connections: JR, the Midosuji line and the Haruka all stop at Tennoji. OMO7 Osaka by Hoshino Resorts sits in front of Shin-Imamiya Station next to Shinsekai.
