Universal Studios Japan turned 25 on 31 March 2026, and its anniversary year, “Discover U!!!”, runs until 30 March 2027. Over the winter it adds “Universal Cool Japan 2027” from 2 December 2026, and on New Year’s Eve a 26-hour countdown, from 7pm on 31 December to 9pm on 1 January, for which you need a ¥16,900 Party Pass. Where you sleep decides how early you reach the gates and how easily you get back for a rest.
There are two ways to do it. Stay at Universal City, where seven official hotels sit a few minutes’ walk from the park, or stay in central Osaka, about 11 minutes away by JR from Osaka Station, and see the rest of the city too. This guide covers the journey times, the 2026 calendar, the seven official hotels, two Umeda hotels and two in town that run a free bus to the park. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating at the start of October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.
The short answer
| If you want… | Stay in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| first through the gates, and back for a rest | Universal City | The seven official hotels, a few minutes’ walk from the park |
| the park and the rest of Osaka | Umeda (Osaka Station) | About 11 minutes by JR to Universal City Station |
| a bus from your hotel to the gates | Nakanoshima or Shin-Imamiya | Free guest buses from the RIHGA Royal and OMO7 Osaka |
Getting to the park
The park’s station is Universal City, on the JR Yumesaki line. By the park’s own estimates:
| From | To Universal City Station |
|---|---|
| Osaka Station (Umeda) | About 11 minutes |
| JR-Namba | About 15 minutes |
| Shin-Osaka, for the Shinkansen | About 16 minutes |
From Osaka Station some trains run through; at other times you change at Nishikujo, where the Yumesaki line starts.
The 2026 calendar at the park
- The 25th anniversary, “Discover U!!!”, runs until 30 March 2027.
- Universal Cool Japan 2027 starts on 2 December 2026, opening in stages, the first with Sailor Moon.
- The New Year countdown, “NO LIMIT! Countdown 2027”, runs from 7pm on 31 December 2026 to 9pm on 1 January 2027. You need a Party Pass, ¥16,900, and can leave and re-enter during those hours. The countdown itself, with about 5,000 fireworks, runs from 11.50pm to 12.05am over the Lagoon. During the event Super Nintendo World closes for maintenance for a time, and each guest can get only one timed-entry ticket for it, through the official app.
- Party Pass sales: after the annual-pass and Lawson Ticket pre-sales, general sale opens at about 9pm on 4 November 2026 on the official Web Ticket Store and Lawson Ticket, and at the official hotels, all but a few, for their own guests, but only if any are left.
Universal City: the official hotels
Universal City is the cluster of hotels, shops and restaurants between the station and the park gates. Staying here means a short walk at either end of the day, and a room to go back to in the middle of it. The seven official hotels, as the park lists them:
Where to stay at Universal City
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- The Park Front Hotel at Universal Studios Japan, comfortable. Right outside the main gate, the closest of the hotels to the park, with park-view rooms and bunk-bed rooms for families. Choose it to be first through the gates. Watch out: the rest of Osaka is a train ride away. Check rates on Booking.com →
- The Singulari Hotel & Skyspa at Universal Studios Japan, splurge. Connected directly to the station, with an outdoor bath and sauna and a handmade Japanese and Western breakfast. Choose it for a soak after the park. Watch out: it is the hotel to book for the spa, not for a themed room. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Keihan Universal Tower, comfortable. A tower with a natural hot spring on the 31st floor, the first in Osaka with that kind of view, and a sky restaurant and bar. Choose it for a view and a bath after the park. Watch out: it is a tower hotel, not a themed one. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Kintetsu Universal City, comfortable. Guest floors themed on Sesame Street, and a Universal Studios Store in the hotel for park merchandise. Choose it for children who love the characters. Watch out: ask for a themed room when you book; not every room is one. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Universal Port, good value. Minions in the lobby and in the rooms, a Universal Studios Store in the hotel, and themed rooms. Choose it for the most character in the room. Watch out: it is the busiest kind of fun, by design. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Universal Port Vita, good value. Opened in July 2018, with sun and nature designs and Minions at the door. Choose it for a lighter, newer base. Watch out: the theming is gentler than at its sister hotel. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Oriental Hotel Universal City, comfortable. A calm hotel with nature in its design and what it calls a signature breakfast. Choose it for quiet after a day in the park. Watch out: little theming, by design. Check rates on Booking.com →
Umeda and Osaka Station: the park and the city
Umeda, around Osaka Station, is the transport end of the city: about 11 minutes by JR to Universal City, 16 minutes from the Shinkansen at Shin-Osaka to the park, and every other part of Osaka within reach. It suits a trip where the park is one or two days of several.
Where to stay in Umeda
- THE OSAKA STATION HOTEL, Autograph Collection, splurge. 418 rooms in the JP Tower, open since July 2024, with a direct connection to JR Osaka Station. Choose it to step from the platforms into your room. Watch out: price. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Hankyu RESPIRE OSAKA, good value. Around 1,000 rooms on the 9th to 35th floors of the Yodobashi Umeda Tower, open since 2019. Choose it for a well-priced base on top of the trains. Watch out: a very large hotel. Check rates on Booking.com →
In town, with a free bus to the park
Two partner hotels in the city run their own free bus to the park for guests:
- RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka, Vignette Collection, comfortable. In Nakanoshima. Its free bus for guests runs once a day, leaving an hour before the park opens and taking about 25 minutes; it has 45 seats and must be booked by the day before. Choose it for a grand hotel with the park run sorted. Watch out: there is one bus a day, so plan the trip back. Check rates on Booking.com →
- OMO7 Osaka by Hoshino Resorts, good value. 436 rooms in front of Shin-Imamiya Station, next to Shinsekai. Its free shuttle for guests takes about 30 minutes, leaving the hotel at 8am and 9.20am and coming back from the park at 5.30pm and 6.50pm; book before you board. Choose it for a lively base with a bus there and back. Watch out: the bus times are fixed, so plan your day around them. Check rates on Booking.com →
How to book
- Coming for the countdown? Book the room first: a Universal City hotel puts you a short walk from the gates at midnight, and the official hotels, all but a few, sell Party Passes to their guests from 4 November.
- Check what the room includes. Themed rooms are a room type of their own at Hotel Kintetsu Universal City and Hotel Universal Port; ask for one by name.
- Mind the tax. Since 1 September 2025 Osaka Prefecture’s accommodation tax is ¥200 a person a night on rooms of ¥5,000 to ¥14,999, ¥400 from ¥15,000 and ¥500 from ¥20,000; rooms under ¥5,000 are exempt.
- Buy park tickets from the park. Studio Passes and Express Passes are sold on the official Web Ticket Store.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and where to stay in Osaka covers five areas of the city.
