Osaka’s cherry trees open, on average, on 27 March and reach full bloom on 4 April, by the Osaka Regional Headquarters of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and its normals for 1991 to 2020. The hotel bill adds little to that: the prefecture’s accommodation tax has been at most ¥500 per person per night since 1 September 2025. What shapes an Osaka blossom trip is that the trees are spread across the whole city, and the best-known sight, the Japan Mint’s cherry passage, is open for one week, by reservation, usually after the main bloom has passed.

This guide covers the dates to aim for, the Mint’s reservation system, four areas matched to the blossom you can reach from each, twelve hotels to start with, and when to book. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating at the start of November 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

When to go: the dates to aim for

The averages are a guide, not a promise. By the JMA’s Osaka observations, taken on a sample tree in the Nishinomaru Garden of Osaka Castle Park:

Year First flowers Full bloom
Normal (1991–2020) 27 March 4 April
2025 27 March 4 April
2026 26 March 3 April

The JMA counts first flowers when five or six blossoms have opened on the sample tree, and full bloom when about 80 per cent of it is open. In each of these years full bloom came eight days after the first flowers. The extremes are wider: the earliest first flowers on record fell on 19 March, in 2023, and the latest on 10 April, in 1984. Aim for the last days of March and the first days of April, and stay four or five nights rather than two, so that an early or late year still overlaps with your stay. That window is our suggestion, not a forecast.

Forecasts for 2027 will come from private weather companies, and they start in the winter. For the 2026 season the first came from the Japan Meteorological Corporation on 18 December 2025, which said only that the Kinki region would be about average; Weathernews followed on 8 January with 27 March for Osaka, and the Japan Weather Association on 29 January with 25 March. The trees opened on 26 March, within a day of both. We found no 2027 forecast as of 1 November 2026, and you should expect the first in December or January.

Not every tree follows the forecast. The Somei Yoshino variety is the one the forecasts and the JMA track; the Mint’s collection is made up of many other varieties, and in 2026 its passage opened six days after Osaka’s full bloom.

The Mint’s cherry passage: reserve, do not turn up

The Japan Mint opens a 560-metre path beside the old Yodo River, the Okawa, for one week each spring. In 2026 it ran from Thursday 9 April to Wednesday 15 April, from 10:00 on weekdays and 9:00 at weekends until 19:15, with everyone out by 19:45. The Mint’s own count that year was 140 varieties and 331 trees, with a yellow-green variety called Gyoiko as the flower of the year, and about 181,000 visitors. On the last day it described the blossom as about 70 per cent open overall.

The 2026 passage was by advance online application only, first come, first served. Applications opened at 09:00 on 18 March; each 30-minute entry slot had a cap, you could book one slot a day for up to five people, and you needed the QR code from the confirmation email, with a baggage check on entry. There is no parking and no coach drop-off. The Mint announced the 2026 format on 14 January and the application details in mid-March, and we have seen no 2027 dates, so check the Mint’s Osaka page from January and plan to stay into the second week of April if the passage matters to you.

Tax: Osaka’s accommodation tax in spring 2027

Osaka Prefecture charges a flat tax per person per night, set by the room rate. These are the rates in force since 1 September 2025, and we found no announced change for spring 2027:

Room rate per person per night Tax per person per night
Under ¥5,000 Not taxed
¥5,000 to under ¥15,000 ¥200
¥15,000 to under ¥20,000 ¥400
¥20,000 or more ¥500

The rate counts the room-only price, the service charge on it and any mandatory cleaning fee; consumption tax and meals are left out. Before September 2025 the amounts were ¥100, ¥200 and ¥300, with rooms under ¥7,000 exempt, so older articles quote lower figures. Our arithmetic: a traveller paying ¥18,000 a night before consumption tax for four nights pays ¥400 a night, ¥1,600 in all; at ¥22,000 a night the tax is ¥500 a night, ¥2,000. For the other taxes on a Japan trip, see Japan’s tourist taxes in 2026.

Getting in from Kansai Airport and Itami

Osaka Castle and Kyobashi: the castle and the evening opening

Osaka Castle Park has about 3,000 cherry trees, by the park’s own count. The Nishinomaru Garden, to the west of the keep, has about 300 Somei Yoshino and weeping cherries, and in 2026 it opened in the evening from 20 March to 12 April, until 21:00 with last entry at 20:30, for a special ¥350 for high school age and over. The park is open all day and free to enter. Kyobashi is the practical base nearby: JR, Keihan and the subway meet there, and on the Loop Line it sits between Sakuranomiya and Osakajo-koen stations, one stop from each.

Temmabashi and Sakuranomiya: the river and the Mint

Kema Sakuranomiya Park runs for 4.2 kilometres along both banks of the Okawa, with about 4,800 cherry trees of Somei Yoshino, Yamazakura and Satozakura varieties, according to OSAKA-INFO’s guide; late March to mid-April is its season. It is about two minutes on foot from JR Sakuranomiya and Osakajo-kitazume stations and about eight from Temmabashi on the subway. The Mint is on the same stretch of river, about 15 minutes’ walk from Temmabashi or Osakajo-kitazume. Staying here means the riverbank at first light, before the crowds.

Umeda and Shin-Osaka: the trains, Kyoto and the Expo Park

Umeda, around Osaka Station, is where the trains are: Sakuranomiya is two stops on the Loop Line, and the Midosuji subway line runs north to Shin-Osaka and on to Senri-Chuo. From Shin-Osaka the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line to Senri-Chuo and then the Osaka Monorail reach Expo ‘70 Commemorative Park, where the Osaka Prefecture’s SAKURA EXPO ran from 20 March to 5 April in 2026 among about 5,500 cherry trees of 12 varieties, with evening lighting until 21:00 on days set by the bloom. From 1 April 2026 the park’s adult admission is ¥450, and it is about five minutes’ walk from the monorail station to the Chuo Gate.

Namba and Shinsaibashi: food and the airport train

Namba and Shinsaibashi are the base for Dotonbori’s canal and the food Osaka is known for, and Nankai’s trains to Kansai Airport start at Namba. They are the furthest of these areas from the cherry trees, so the trade-off is a train each way to the castle or the river. For a trip that is mostly eating, with a day or two of blossom, it works; for a trip built around hanami, use one of the areas above. Our guide to where to stay in Osaka covers the area in full.

Frequently asked questions

When do the cherry blossoms bloom in Osaka in 2027?

No one knows yet. The JMA's Osaka normals (1991 to 2020) are first flowers on 27 March and full bloom on 4 April; in 2026 they were 26 March and 3 April. For the 2026 season the first forecasts came out between 18 December and 29 January, so expect the 2027 ones on a similar timetable.

What is the best area to stay in Osaka for cherry blossom?

Osaka Castle and Kyobashi put the castle's trees on foot, with Kema Sakuranomiya Park one Loop Line stop away. Temmabashi and Sakuranomiya suit the Okawa riverbank and the Mint; Umeda and Shin-Osaka give the trains and the route to Expo '70 Park; Namba is for food and the airport train.

Do I need to book the Japan Mint cherry blossom passage?

In 2026 yes: it was by advance online application only, first come first served, opening at 09:00 on 18 March for the 9 to 15 April week, with 30-minute entry slots and up to five people per application. We have seen no 2027 dates, so check the Mint's site from January.

How much is Osaka's accommodation tax?

Since 1 September 2025 it is ¥200 per person per night for rooms from ¥5,000 to under ¥15,000, ¥400 from ¥15,000 and ¥500 from ¥20,000; rooms under ¥5,000 are not taxed. We found no announced change for spring 2027.

How far ahead should I book an Osaka hotel for cherry blossom season?

As soon as your dates are firm. Book a refundable rate for the last days of March and the first days of April, then adjust when the forecasts arrive in December and January, checking each rate's cancellation deadline.

How do I get from Kansai Airport to central Osaka?

Nankai's Rapi:t reaches Namba in as little as 34 minutes and the Airport Express in about 45; Nankai's Rapi:t digital ticket is ¥1,410 for a regular seat. JR's Haruka runs direct to Osaka, Shin-Osaka and Tennoji, but its discounted ticket price changes for tickets sold from 1 November 2026, so check JR West's page.
