Where to Book a Halong Bay Cruise: Klook, Viator, or Direct?

By Casey, Gently Yonder editor

Booking direct with the boat operator is often cheaper, because the platform commission is inside the price. When the platform is still worth paying for, what a day trip and an overnight actually cost, and which bay you are really entering.

This is the one tour on our list where the honest answer is often not a booking platform at all.

Halong Bay cruises are sold by the boat operators themselves, and most of those operators run their own websites. When you book through Klook, Viator or GetYourGuide, the platform’s commission is inside the price you pay. Book the same cabin on the same boat directly with the operator and you will frequently pay less.

We earn a commission when you use our links. We are telling you this anyway, because a comparison that hides the cheapest route isn’t a comparison.

If you want… Book on Why
The lowest price on a specific boat The operator’s own site The platform commission is baked into the OTA price
Card protection and a refund you can chase Klook or Viator Operators often want a bank transfer or deposit; a platform booking keeps it on your card
To compare 50+ boats quickly Viator The largest catalogue of Halong listings by a distance
A day trip, not an overnight Klook Strong on the Hanoi-pickup day-cruise format
Free cancellation on a weather-risky date A platform, not direct Platform cancellation terms are clearer and easier to enforce from abroad
A limestone karst rising from Halong Bay under grey cloud
The bay looks like this more often than the brochures admit. Weather is the variable nobody's listing controls.

Settle these two questions before you open any platform

1. Day trip or overnight? They are different products at different prices:

Format Typical price What you get
Basic day trip from about US$13 Transport and a short cruise; often more bus than boat
Premium day trip around US$29–50 Kayaking, lunch, a longer time on the water
Overnight, 1 night about US$99–130 A cabin, the evening and the early morning on the bay
2 nights from about US$365 Further into Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long, away from the day fleet

The day trip is around four hours of road for a few hours afloat. It works if Halong is the only thing you want from a spare day. If you can spare the night, the difference is not marginal — the bay after the day boats leave is a genuinely different place.

2. Which bay? Cruises depart into Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay. Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long carry the same limestone seascape with noticeably fewer boats in the anchorage. Our guide to Halong Bay cruises from Hanoi works through the routes and the road journey in full.

Only once you’ve fixed the format and the bay does the platform question mean anything — because then you are comparing the same boat rather than two different holidays.

When the platform is worth the commission

Booking direct is cheaper. It is not always better. The case for paying the platform:

The practical approach most experienced travellers land on: use a platform to find the boat and read the reviews, check the operator’s own site for the same dates, then decide whether the gap is worth giving up the card protection. Often it is not, and you book on the platform anyway with your eyes open.

Klook is the one we’d open first for the day-trip format, which is where most first-time visitors start, and its Hanoi pickup arrangements are straightforward.

Viator carries the widest range, including multi-day cruises into Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long. If you want an unusual itinerary, it most likely exists there.

GetYourGuide lists Halong overnight cruises including Ti Top Island itineraries. Our link to it goes through our partner Stay22, and we may earn a commission if you book. We have no relationship with Viator and have named it anyway, because leaving it out would be dishonest.

What to check on the listing

  1. Which bay? Halong, Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long are sold under the same headline.
  2. How many boats at anchor? Recent reviews will tell you; the listing won’t.
  3. Is the transfer included, and is it a limousine van or a coach? This is four hours each way.
  4. What’s the cancellation term if the operator cancels for weather? Refund or credit?
  5. Then compare the same boat on a platform and on the operator’s own site.

You can browse Halong Bay cruises on Klook — the easiest starting point for day trips — and cross-check KKday for the same sailings. For Hanoi itself, self-guided audio tours cover the old quarter, and given the length of the road journey it’s worth comparing travel cover before you go.

For the rest of the trip: the things worth your time in Hanoi and Hanoi for first-timers cover the city at either end of the cruise, and the eSIM guidance for Vietnam matters here — you will want to reach your operator from the pickup point. You can also set up data before you fly. For the platform question in general, Klook vs Viator vs GetYourGuide covers how the three differ, and how to keep travel costs down puts a cruise in proportion.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to book a Halong Bay cruise direct or on Klook?

Direct with the operator is frequently cheaper, because the platform's commission is inside the price you pay on Klook, Viator or GetYourGuide. The trade-off is that operators often want a bank transfer or deposit, while a platform booking stays on your card with clearer cancellation terms.

How much does a Halong Bay cruise cost?

Basic day trips start around US$13 and premium day cruises with kayaking and lunch run about US$29 to 50. One-night overnight cruises typically cost US$99 to 130, and two-night itineraries start around US$365.

Is a Halong Bay day trip worth it?

It depends on your time. A day trip is roughly four hours of road for a few hours on the water. If you can give it a night, the bay after the day fleet has gone is a substantially different experience: quieter water, and the early morning to yourself.

Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay, which should I book?

Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long offer much the same limestone seascape as Halong Bay with fewer boats in the anchorage. Halong proper is the busiest and the most heavily sold. Check which bay a listing actually enters, because all three are advertised under the same headline.

Which platform has the most Halong Bay cruises?

Viator carries the largest catalogue by a clear margin, including multi-day and less common itineraries. Klook is strong on the Hanoi-pickup day-cruise format that most first-time visitors book.
