Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party is a ticketed night inside closed city-centre streets. The organisers say 45,000 people will party into 2027 there, with gates opening at 8pm on Thursday 31 December 2026 and last entry at 11pm. Your ticket names one of three gates, east, west or south, and the organisers say it cannot be changed after purchase, so the hotel and the gate are one decision. Some hotels sell the night as a package: The Balmoral’s Hogmanay Ball offer needs a minimum of two nights, and it is sold for 30 and 31 December only.
This guide covers the 2026/27 programme the organisers have published, four areas matched to the gates and the Old Town, 12 hotels, the Visitor Levy and what to book first. For the rest of your trip, where to stay in Edinburgh covers six areas and 12 hotels, four of which also appear here. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

29 December to 1 January: the official programme
The organisers’ site, edinburghshogmanay.com, now redirects to edwinterfest.com/hogmanay. In October 2026 it publishes four days of events for 2026/27, with tickets on sale. It has not yet published stage times for the Street Party; the organisers say they will be released in the lead-up to the event.
| When | Event | Where | Tickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuesday 29 December, 6.30pm | Torchlight Procession | From The Meadows, through the Old Town | From £5.75 |
| Wednesday 30 December, 6pm | Night Afore Party with The Fratellis | West Princes Street Gardens | From £42 |
| Thursday 31 December, 8pm | Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party | Princes Street and the city centre | From £10 |
| Thursday 31 December, doors 8pm | Hogmanay in the Gardens with Underworld | West Princes Street Gardens | From £79 |
| New Year’s Day | First Footin’ | Venues across the city centre | Free, unticketed |
First Footin’ is a free live music trail. Its page still carries last year’s date and details, so we have no 2027 times to give you.
For the Street Party itself, the organisers publish a running order:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 8pm | Gates open |
| From 9pm | Hourly firework teasers |
| 11pm | Last entry |
| 11:59pm | Midnight countdown |
| Midnight | Midnight Moment fireworks and Auld Lang Syne |
| About 12:50am | The event ends |
The Gardens concert runs on its own clock. Doors open at 8pm, the stage is live from 8.50pm and last entry is 11pm. For the first time, the organisers say, Underworld will soundtrack the Midnight Moment live from the Main Stage in West Princes Street Gardens, below the Castle. Tickets run from £79, and there are Enclosure, Gardens and Premium tiers.
The rules that decide where you sleep
- Pick the gate first. The Street Party has three gates: the South Gate at Bank Street and the top of The Mound, the East Gate at the east end of Princes Street where it meets North Bridge, and the West Gate at the west end of Princes Street, off the bottom of Lothian Road. Each ticket names one gate, and admittance is strictly through it. The Gardens concert has two, West and South, with the same rule.
- The two tickets are separate. A Street Party ticket does not get you into Hogmanay in the Gardens, and the other way round.
- No re-entry. Once you leave the Street Party or the Gardens, you cannot go back in. Last entry is 11pm, so nobody nips back to the hotel at 11.30.
- Ages. No one under 12 is admitted to the Street Party, the Gardens or the Night Afore Party. Anyone under 16 must hold a full-price ticket and be accompanied by an adult over 18.
- Alcohol. You may bring alcohol into the Street Party only in plastic or metal containers under 500ml, up to four per person, and no glass. No alcohol may be brought into the Gardens concert or the Night Afore Party.
- What to leave behind. Umbrellas, glass, drones, dogs (except registered assistance dogs), flares, Chinese lanterns and bags larger than a sheet of A3 paper.
- Buy from the official sellers only. The organisers name edinburghshogmanay.com, Ticketmaster and tickets-scotland.com, say there is no official resale, and say tickets listed on Eventbrite or secondary sites are not valid. Tickets are e-tickets. A gifted ticket needs a signed letter of authority and the recipient’s photo ID.
Last year’s closures, and what is not yet published
The organisers’ page for residents and businesses still describes the 2025 edition, and the 2026 closure notices had not been posted when we looked. Last year’s pattern was this: closures began progressively from 00:01 on 29 December, the arena gates were in use from 17:00 on 30 December, and the main closure of Princes Street and its side streets began at 19:00 that evening. On 31 December most pedestrian restrictions started at 18:00 and lasted until about 04:00 on 1 January.
Anyone with a property or business inside the arena was offered access passes, for staff and customers where applicable. The addresses on last year’s list were 30 to 134 Princes Street, 2 to 35 Castle Street, 1 to 19 Frederick Street, 1 to 33 Hanover Street, 17 Waverley Bridge and 18 to 21 Market Street. None of the hotels below published how it admits guests through the barriers, so ask in writing, and ask which side of the barrier your hotel’s front door falls on.
The West End and Lothian Road: the West Gate
The West Gate for the Street Party is off the bottom of Lothian Road, and West Princes Street Gardens, where the Underworld concert is held, lies below the Castle beside it. If your ticket is for the West Gate, or for the Gardens, a bed at this end means the walk home is short and flat.
Where to stay in the West End
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- The Caledonian Edinburgh, Curio Collection by Hilton, splurge. On Princes Street for more than 120 years, with views of Edinburgh Castle, a spa and The Court restaurant. On 31 December it holds its annual Scottish Hogmanay Ball, with a four-course Scottish dinner, live entertainment and a champagne toast at midnight, and its page lists Hogmanay Packages from £225. Choose it for a ball in the building, with the West Gate and the Gardens concert at the end of the street. Watch out: the page does not say what the £225 includes, so ask whether it covers a room. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh, comfortable. At 1 Festival Square, up Lothian Road from the West Gate, with many rooms looking at the Castle, One Spa with a rooftop hydropool, and a 19m indoor pool free to guests. For Hogmanay it holds a six-course dinner party in the One Square Brasserie, with a welcome drink. Choose it for a spa day before the night. Watch out: the page gives no price for the dinner and no minimum stay. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hampton by Hilton Edinburgh West End, good value. At 166 Fountainbridge, a 10-minute walk from the conference centre and, by the hotel’s count, a mile from the Castle, with a free hot breakfast. It says the 5% Visitor Levy is included in the total price shown. Choose it for a lower price with breakfast. Watch out: it is the farthest from any gate in this guide, so you will walk or take the tram. Check rates on Booking.com →
The east end of Princes Street: the East Gate
The East Gate is the junction of Princes Street and North Bridge, and the three hotels here sit at that end of the street. None of them is on last year’s list of addresses that were offered access passes, which began at 30 Princes Street, but the organisers do not say exactly where the East Gate stands relative to them. Ask each hotel.
Where to stay at the east end of Princes Street
- The Balmoral, splurge. At 1 Princes Street, under the landmark clock tower. Its New Year’s Eve offer centres on a black-tie Hogmanay Ball, with Champagne and canapés, a five-course dinner in the Sir Walter Scott Suite, live music and pipes. The stay includes daily breakfast, access to the Ball for two and a bottle of Champagne. The terms say a minimum stay of two nights, for stays on 30 and 31 December 2026 only. Choose it to have the Ball and the East Gate in one building. Watch out: the page publishes no price. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Indigo Edinburgh - Princes Street, comfortable. At 20 Princes Street, in a Victorian building the hotel says has views of Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town skyline. Choose it for the east end of the street without the Balmoral’s price. Watch out: its page publishes no Hogmanay terms, so ask about the minimum stay and about the barriers. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Motel One Edinburgh-Princes, budget. At 10-15 Princes Street, which the hotel puts opposite the Balmoral and the Scott Monument, with 16 m² rooms and a “with a view” room type that looks over the historic centre. Choose it to keep the money for the night itself. Watch out: rooms are compact. Check rates on Booking.com →
North Bridge, St Andrew Square and St James Quarter
North and south of the East Gate, off the closed street: North Bridge, St Andrew Square and St James Quarter. None of these three addresses is on last year’s access-pass list, and each is a walk from the East Gate. We have not timed the walks, and the closed streets will lengthen them.
Where to stay around North Bridge and St James Quarter
- The Scotsman Hotel, comfortable, historic. At 20 North Bridge, on the bridge that connects the Old Town and the New Town, with ten floors and views, the hotel says, of Edinburgh Castle, Calton Hill and the Scott Monument. It sells Hogmanay dining rather than a stay package: a four-course dinner party with a piper, ceilidh and a dram at the bells in the Grand Café at £140 a person from 7.30pm, and a three-course dinner in the Fettercairn Suite at £110 a person. Choose it for a historic hotel on the route to the East Gate. Watch out: the parties are dining tickets, separate from a room. Check rates on Booking.com →
- W Edinburgh, splurge. At 1 St James Square, in three buildings within St James Quarter, with a rooftop W Deck the hotel says has 360-degree views. For 31 December it lists a four-course New Year’s Eve dinner, NYE After Dark in the W Lounge from 10pm, with the move up to the W Deck at midnight, and a late sitting at SUSHISAMBA. Choose it for midnight on a rooftop. Watch out: its page gives no prices for these events and no minimum stay. Check rates on Booking.com →
- ibis Styles Edinburgh St Andrew Square, good value. At 19 St Andrew Square, which the hotel puts five minutes’ walk from St James Quarter and Waverley station, with some balcony rooms and the Bonnie & Whistle bar and restaurant. Choose it for a lower price a few minutes from the East Gate. Watch out: balcony rooms are a request, not a room type you can count on, and its page publishes no Hogmanay terms. Check rates on Booking.com →
The Old Town: Torchlight and the South Gate
The Torchlight Procession on 29 December climbs through the Old Town, and the South Gate for the Street Party is at Bank Street, at the top of The Mound. The Old Town is where you stay if the procession is the point, or if you are happy to walk the Royal Mile to a South Gate ticket. The streets are steep and cobbled, and the walk back after midnight is the cost.
Where to stay in the Old Town
- The Witchery, splurge. On Castlehill, at the top of the Royal Mile beside the gates of Edinburgh Castle, with nine suites. Its Hogmanay five-course dinner is £180 a person, with paired wines £140 more, and it needs a £90 a person non-refundable deposit; bookings start from 4.45pm. Choose it for a once-only night by the Castle. Watch out: the suites are designed for two adults, and the dinner is a separate booking from the room. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Virgin Hotels Edinburgh, comfortable. At 1 India Buildings, Victoria Street, in the Old Town. It sells three Hogmanay events: a six-course dinner with Champagne arrival and rooftop access for the fireworks at £265 a person, a black-tie Hogmanay Ball in Greyfriars Hall at £250, and a New Year’s party in Eve at £8. Choose it for a hotel that runs its own Hogmanay events. Watch out: the page does not say whether the events are open to non-guests. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Apex Grassmarket Hotel, comfortable. At 31-35 Grassmarket, below the Castle, with Castle View room types. On 31 December it holds Hogmanay in Heights, from 8pm to 12.30am, a five-course menu with a glass of Champagne at £159 a person, with views, the hotel says, of the Castle and the fireworks; over 18s only. Choose it for the Old Town at a lower price. Watch out: the way from the Grassmarket up to the Royal Mile and Bank Street is a climb. Check rates on Booking.com →
Getting in from the airport, and around on the night
- By tram from the airport: £7.90 single or £9.50 open return to the city centre, with trams every 7 minutes for most of the day. The airport puts the journey into the city centre at 30 minutes. Last year, Edinburgh Trams said that from after 6pm on 30 December trams would stop serving Princes Street and St Andrew Square, running a split service, Edinburgh Airport to West End and Newhaven to Picardy Place, through 31 December, with the road expected to re-open on the morning of New Year’s Day.
- After midnight, last year’s pattern was all-night trams, free after midnight: up to every 10 minutes from midnight until 2am, then every 20 minutes until the start of service on 1 January. The 2026 notice was not yet posted when we looked.
- By Airlink 100 bus: Lothian’s 24-hour express to Waverley Bridge, £6 single or £8.50 open return. Waverley Bridge is close to the arena, so check where it stops on the night.
- Lothian’s city buses: last year’s Christmas and New Year guide said last buses would run earlier than normal on 31 December, with services curtailed or diverted, and several routes cut at West End or Waterloo Place all day. It listed special Hogmanay night services for the morning of 1 January. Lothian had not published its 2026 version when we checked.
- In town, a single on Lothian buses or the city-zone tram costs £2.40, and fares cap at £5.70 a day in the city zone when you tap a contactless card or phone.
- On foot. Princes Street is closed to traffic, and the organisers’ travel page, which still carries some of last year’s wording, says ScotRail services wind down from about 7pm on 31 December; check scotrail.co.uk.
Edinburgh’s Visitor Levy
Edinburgh is the first place in Scotland to charge a visitor levy. Since 24 July 2026 every paid overnight stay in the city, from a five-star hotel to a hostel bed, carries a 5% charge on the room, on top of VAT, for the first five nights.
| Charge | Rate in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Edinburgh Visitor Levy | 5% of the accommodation-only price, before VAT |
| Nights charged | The first 5 consecutive nights of a stay |
| Where it applies | Paid overnight stays from 24 July 2026: hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, hostels, aparthotels, short-term lets and camp sites |
| Not charged on | Extras such as parking, meals, drinks or transport |
| VAT on a hotel room | 20%, the UK’s standard rate |
A hotel registered for VAT adds VAT to the levy as well, which makes the levy 5% of the VAT-inclusive room price. As our arithmetic, a room at £450 a night including VAT costs £375 before VAT; 5% of that is £18.75, plus £3.75 of VAT on the levy, so £22.50 a night and £45 for the two nights of 30 and 31 December. A stay booked and paid for before 1 October 2025 is exempt, which no Hogmanay booking made now can be. Compare totals, not headline prices: Hampton by Hilton Edinburgh West End says on its own site that the levy is included in the total it shows.
When to book Hogmanay in Edinburgh
- Tickets first. Tickets for the Street Party and the Gardens concert are on sale, and the gate on your ticket is final. We could not see how many remain.
- Check the minimum stay. The Balmoral’s Hogmanay Ball offer needs two nights, on 30 and 31 December only. The Caledonian sells Hogmanay Packages from £225. The other hotels publish no New Year’s Eve minimum on the pages we read, so ask.
- Read what is a stay and what is a dinner. The Scotsman, Virgin Hotels Edinburgh, Apex Grassmarket and The Witchery sell Hogmanay events by the person. Check whether they need a room, and what the deposit terms are.
- Check your dates before you fall for an offer. The Balmoral’s package covers 30 and 31 December only. Look at a booking site’s availability for your own nights, and keep free cancellation until your tickets are in hand.
- Compare totals. Our hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and hotel taxes around the world shows how other cities charge theirs.

Frequently asked questions
When is Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party in 2026?
Thursday 31 December 2026. The organisers say gates open at 8pm, last entry is at 11pm, the midnight countdown starts at 11:59pm and the event ends at about 12:50am. About 45,000 people are expected, and stage times had not been released when we checked.
Do you need a ticket for the Hogmanay Street Party?
Yes. Tickets start at £10, and each one names a single gate, east, west or south, which cannot be changed after purchase. The organisers name edinburghshogmanay.com, Ticketmaster and tickets-scotland.com as the only official sellers, and say there is no official resale.
Where is the best place to stay for Hogmanay in Edinburgh?
It depends on your gate. The East Gate is at the east end of Princes Street, by North Bridge, and the West Gate is off the bottom of Lothian Road. The South Gate is at Bank Street at the top of The Mound. The Old Town suits the Torchlight Procession and the South Gate, and the West End suits the West Gate and the Gardens concert.
Do Edinburgh hotels have minimum stays at Hogmanay?
Some do. The Balmoral's Hogmanay Ball offer needs a minimum of two nights and is available for stays on 30 and 31 December 2026 only. The Caledonian lists Hogmanay Packages from £225 without saying what they include. The other hotels here publish no New Year's Eve minimum on the pages we read, so ask.
Can you leave the Street Party and come back in?
No. The organisers say re-entry is not permitted, and last entry is at 11pm. Umbrellas, glass, drones, dogs other than registered assistance dogs and bags larger than a sheet of A3 paper are not allowed, and no one under 12 is admitted.
Is there a visitor levy on Edinburgh hotels at Hogmanay?
Yes. Since 24 July 2026 Edinburgh charges a Visitor Levy of 5% of the accommodation-only price, before VAT, for the first five consecutive nights of a stay. A VAT-registered hotel adds VAT to the levy, so it works out as 5% of the VAT-inclusive room price.
