Kraków’s hotel bill is unusual among big European cities this year: there is no tourist tax on top of the room rate. The only tax inside the price is Poland’s 8% VAT on accommodation. That may change, because a law signed in October lets Polish councils charge up to 5 zloty a person a night from 1 January 2027, and we found no Kraków decision yet. Where you stay matters more for your time than your tax.
This guide covers five areas, from the Old Town to Podgórze, 12 hotels, the airport links and the tax position. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

Kraków’s tourist tax: none in 2026, and a new law for 2027
| Charge | In 2026 |
|---|---|
| Local fee (opłata miejscowa) | Not charged in Kraków |
| VAT on accommodation | 8%, part of the quoted room rate |
| From 1 January 2027, under the new law | Councils may set a local fee of up to 5 zloty a person a night; no Kraków decision found |
Poland has a local fee and a spa fee, but until now a council could charge the local fee only in a place with favourable climate, scenic value and conditions for tourism and recreation all at once. The city’s own tourism office says most municipalities, Kraków included, do not meet those conditions, and that Kraków’s mayors have lobbied for years for a dedicated tourist tax. So a visitor staying in 2026 pays no city fee.
That is changing. Parliament passed an amendment to the local taxes act on 18 September 2026, the Senate made no changes, and the legislative record shows the President signing it on 15 October. From 1 January 2027 a council may introduce a local fee in places with landscape value of up to 5 zloty a person a night, or 5.50 in spa-protection areas; the council sets the rate and exemptions, and the accommodation provider collects it. In the Sejm, the committee report was summarised as opening the way for cities such as Kraków, but the Council of Ministers still has to set the minimum landscape qualities by regulation, and we found no Kraków council resolution. If you book a stay that begins in 2027, ask the hotel whether a local fee applies.
VAT on accommodation is 8%, under Poland’s VAT act. Hotels in Poland normally quote prices with VAT included, so there is no extra line on the bill, but check that the rate you book says so.
Worked example (our arithmetic, not a hotel quote): a double room at 400 zloty a night, VAT included, for two nights costs 800 zloty. The 8% VAT inside it is 800 × 8 ÷ 108 = 59.26 zloty, so the net price is 740.74 zloty. In 2026 nothing else is added. If a Kraków council one day set the 2027 ceiling of 5 zloty a person a night, two adults staying two nights would pay 20 zloty more, 2.5% of the room rate.
Getting in from the airport, and around
- By train from Kraków Airport. The station is next to the terminal, joined by a covered footbridge, and the Koleje Małopolskie line SKA1 runs to Kraków Główny in 17 minutes on the operator’s timetable. Trains leave about every 30 minutes from 06:17 to 22:17, and hourly earlier and later. The fare is 20 zloty from the airport to Kraków Główny, according to Kraków Airport, and luggage travels free. You can pay at the on-board ticket machine, to the conductor or online.
- By bus. Kraków Airport lists lines 209 and 300 and the night line 902. The city transport authority’s line list shows the 300 running from Os. Podwawelskie to the airport and the 902 from Dworzec Główny Wschód, beside the station, to the airport. Check the day’s timetable before you rely on a night bus.
- Tickets in town. The city’s price list for tickets valid in zones I, II and III is 6 zloty for a 30-minute or single-ride ticket, 8 zloty for 60 minutes, 9 zloty for 90 minutes and 25 zloty for 24 hours. The joint 70-minute ticket, 10 zloty, covers Kraków trams and buses and trains between Kraków’s stations, but not Kraków Lotnisko, the airport station.
- To Wieliczka by train. The same SKA1 line continues beyond Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia, about 25 minutes, 7.50 zloty one way.
The Old Town: the first-trip base
The Old Town is the ring of streets inside the Planty park: the Main Market Square, the Cloth Hall and Floriańska Street, which leads to St Florian’s Gate. Nearly everything a first visit needs is within a walk, and Kraków Główny station is on its north-eastern edge. It is also the busiest part of Kraków, so ask which way a room faces.
Where to stay in the Old Town
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Hotel Stary, splurge. At Szczepańska 5, a few steps from the Main Market Square, with two restaurants and a wellness and spa area with a sauna and a pool. Rooms are on floors I to VI, and some have balconies with views of the square. Choose it for a luxury stay in a historic interior. Watch out: the hotel lists room categories but not room sizes. Check rates on Booking.com →
- H15 Hotel Francuski, splurge. At Pijarska 13, in what the hotel calls the first building in Kraków built as a hotel, with the Brasserie L’Olympique restaurant and pet-friendly rooms. The Michelin Guide recommends it for 2026. Choose it for period style near the Cloth Hall. Watch out: the Comfort double is 20 sq m; for more space the Premium double is 26 sq m. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Pod Różą, comfortable. At Floriańska 14, in a former Renaissance palace, with a restaurant under a glass roof and a wellness and spa area in medieval cellars; it was renovated in 2020. Choose it for the Floriańska Street address. Watch out: some rooms face Floriańska Street and the Royal Route, the others the quieter St Tomasz Street, so ask for the quiet side. Check rates on Booking.com →
Kazimierz: tenement streets and quieter evenings
Kazimierz is the former Jewish quarter, a district of old tenement houses around Szeroka Street and the Józefa and Miodowa streets. It is a short walk from the Old Town, with cafés and restaurants in the old buildings.
Where to stay in Kazimierz
- Hotel Rubinstein, comfortable. At Szeroka 12, in a historic tenement house with a boutique character, a restaurant and a Sky Bar with a view over Kraków. Breakfast comes with several of the packages. Choose it for a historic address on Szeroka Street. Watch out: the Single is 14 sq m and the Economy Standard 18 sq m. Check rates on Booking.com →

The Classic rooms are 21 to 24 sq m and the Superior 24 to 29 sq m. Choose it for larger rooms on the Old Town side of Kazimierz. Watch out: the Classic rooms, the entry category, are the smallest at 21 to 24 sq m. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Kazimierz, good value. At Miodowa 16, in a restored historic building with 38 rooms, air conditioning and a breakfast buffet from 07:00 to 10:30. Wawel and Grodzka: towards the castle
South of the Main Market Square, Grodzka and Kanonicza streets lead along the Royal Route to Wawel, the hill with the castle and the cathedral. Most of the hotels are historic houses.
Where to stay near Wawel
- Hotel Copernicus, splurge. At Kanonicza 16, in a Gothic building below the Royal Castle, with Restaurant Copernicus and a spa in the Gothic cellars. The hotel says it was the first in Poland to join Relais & Châteaux. Choose it for a quiet street beside Wawel. Watch out: the hotel’s site lists room categories, not sizes. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Senacki, comfortable. At Grodzka 51, 450 m from the Main Market Square and 600 m from Wawel by the hotel’s own count, with breakfast served daily and historic cellars. Choose it for a walkable base on the Royal Route. Watch out: the hotel puts Kraków Główny 1.3 km away, so you will want a tram or a taxi from the station. Check rates on Booking.com →
Podgórze: across the river
Podgórze is the district on the south bank of the Vistula, linked to Kazimierz by footbridge. Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory, now a branch of the Museum of Krakow, is at Lipowa 4; its tickets go on sale online 90 days ahead. A hotel here is a longer walk from the Old Town than one inside the Planty ring.
Where to stay in Podgórze
- Qubus Hotel Kraków, comfortable. At Nadwiślańska 6, on the Vistula bank next to Kazimierz, with about 196 rooms, a glass-walled indoor pool on the top floor, a gym, a jacuzzi and saunas, open daily from 07:00 to 22:00 and free for guests. The hotel puts Wawel about 20 minutes away on foot. Choose it for a pool and a base by the river. Watch out: the pool and sauna close every Monday from 10:00 to 14:00 for maintenance. Check rates on Booking.com →
Near Kraków Główny: trains, buses and the airport link
The streets around Kraków Główny, on the Old Town’s north-eastern edge, are less historic than the centre, but they are the simplest base: the airport train stops here, the night bus 902 starts beside the station, and the Old Town is a short walk. The hotels here are the best-value way to be central.
Where to stay near the station
- Hotel Europejski, good value. At Lubicz 5, a three-star hotel that the hotel says was completed in 1884, with 41 rooms and 87 beds, five minutes on foot from the station by its own count. Reception is reached from Radziwiłłowska Street. Choose it for the station and a historic building at a lower price. Watch out: the Single is 12 sq m, and the hotel does not state the size of the standard double. Check rates on Booking.com →
- ibis Krakow Stare Miasto, good value. At Pawia 15, 320 m from Kraków Główny by the hotel’s own count, with an on-site restaurant, IBIS Kitchen, and rooms of 14 sq m for a double or twin and 16 sq m for a premium or family room. Choose it for a plain, reliable base beside the station. Watch out: the hotel itself says the Old Town is a 15-minute walk. Check rates on Booking.com →
- ibis budget Krakow Stare Miasto, budget. At Pawia 11, 200 m from Kraków Główny by the hotel’s own count, with a hot buffet breakfast, a car park and rooms of 12 sq m for a standard single or double. Choose it to spend less on the bed and more on the day. Watch out: the 12 sq m rooms are small, and the shuttle costs extra. Check rates on Booking.com →
Day trips: book the time first
Two well-known day trips from Kraków work on timed entry, so book before you fix a base.
- Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, Oświęcim. The Memorial, a place of remembrance, asks visitors to behave with due solemnity and respect. Admission to the grounds is free, but entry needs a personalised entry card reserved online at visit.auschwitz.org. No cards are available at the entrance, and the Memorial advises booking in advance and arriving at least 30 minutes before the tour starts.
- Wieliczka Salt Mine. Tours run at designated hours depending on online ticket availability. The tourist route takes 2 to 3 hours, runs about 3.5 km and goes down to a maximum of 135 m. Tickets are sold online and at the mine’s ticket office, which sells only places not already bought online.
How to book Kraków
- Count the tax, and the date. There is no city fee in 2026 and the 8% VAT is in the price. For a stay from 1 January 2027, ask whether a council fee of up to 5 zloty a person a night applies.
- Check the room size. Several rooms here are small: the ibis budget room is 12 sq m, the Hotel Europejski Single 12 sq m and the Hotel Rubinstein Single 14 sq m. If you need space, book the category above the cheapest.
- Book timed entries first. Fix your Auschwitz or Wieliczka time, then choose the base that suits the train or bus.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book. For other central European cities, see where to stay in Prague, Budapest and Vienna.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Kraków for a first trip?
The Old Town, the ring of streets inside the Planty park: the Main Market Square, the Cloth Hall and Floriańska Street are on foot, and Kraków Główny station is on its north-eastern edge. Choose Kazimierz for old tenement streets beside the Old Town, Wawel and Grodzka for the castle, Podgórze for a base by the river, and the streets around the station for the airport train and the budget and good-value hotels.
Does Kraków charge a tourist tax in 2026?
No. The local fee (opłata miejscowa) is not charged in Kraków, which the city's tourism office says does not meet the legal conditions. A law signed in October 2026 lets councils set a local fee of up to 5 zloty a person a night from 1 January 2027, but we found no Kraków council decision, so ask the hotel if your stay begins in 2027.
How much is VAT on a hotel room in Poland?
8%, under Poland's VAT act. Hotels in Poland normally quote prices with VAT included, so there is no extra line on the bill. On a 400 zloty room for two nights, 800 zloty in total, the VAT inside the price is 59.26 zloty by our arithmetic.
How do you get from Kraków Airport to the centre?
By train: the Koleje Małopolskie line SKA1 runs from the station beside the terminal to Kraków Główny in 17 minutes, about every 30 minutes from 06:17 to 22:17, for 20 zloty according to Kraków Airport. Buses 209 and 300 and the night line 902 also serve the airport; check the day's timetable.
Do you need to book Auschwitz and Wieliczka in advance?
Yes, both work on timed entry. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial's grounds are free, but entry needs a personalised entry card reserved online at visit.auschwitz.org, none are sold at the entrance, and visitors should arrive at least 30 minutes before the tour. The Wieliczka Salt Mine runs tours at designated hours depending on online ticket availability.
How much is a public transport ticket in Kraków?
According to the city transport authority's price list for zones I, II and III: 6 zloty for a 30-minute or single-ride ticket, 8 zloty for 60 minutes, 9 zloty for 90 minutes and 25 zloty for 24 hours. The joint 70-minute ticket, 10 zloty, does not cover the airport station.
