Rovaniemi at Christmas is cold, dark and busy. Visit Rovaniemi puts December’s average at −20°C to −10°C with about 2.5 hours of daylight. It is also the season when hotels write their own rules: Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna takes leisure bookings from 16 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 paid in full and non-refundable, and Arctic TreeHouse Hotel’s Christmas package needs three nights. Finland’s VAT on accommodation is 13.5% in 2026, down from 14% in 2025.
This guide covers four areas matched to what you can reach from each, 12 hotels (four with glass igloos, described only as their own sites describe them), the season’s dates, the VAT and the journey in. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

The Christmas season: what happens when
There is no festival calendar here, only the dates each operator publishes, clustered between mid-November and early January:
| Dates | What | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| 16 Nov 2026 to 31 Mar 2027 | Leisure reservations at Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna must be paid in full and are not refunded on change or cancellation | The hotel |
| 30 Nov 2026 to 3 Jan 2027 | The Santa Claus Office is open daily, 8am to 8pm | Santa Claus Village |
| 15 Dec 2026 | Arctic SnowHotel opens; its glass igloos are already taking guests | The hotel |
| 15 to 31 Dec 2026 | Apukka’s Christmas Magic under Aurora package, 4 nights or more | The resort |
| 20 to 26 Dec 2026 | Apukka’s Best of Christmas package, 3 nights or more | The resort |
| 23 to 26 Dec or 24 to 27 Dec 2026 | Arctic TreeHouse Hotel’s Christmas stay, 3 nights, with a visit from Santa and his reindeer at the Christmas Eve dinner | The hotel |
Opening hours shift on the 24th and 25th. In Santa Claus Village the Iittala store is closed on both days, and Marimekko and Pentik close at 4pm on 24 December and open at noon on 25 December.
Daylight. Visit Rovaniemi gives December’s average day length as about 2.5 hours and says the sun does not rise at all on the shortest day, 21 or 22 December. The Finnish Meteorological Institute describes the polar night, north of the Arctic Circle, as the period when the sun does not rise above the horizon at all.
Northern Lights. Visit Rovaniemi says the season runs from late August into early April, and that the lights can be seen on around 150 nights a year in Finnish Lapland when weather and viewing conditions are favourable. That is a condition, not a promise: no hotel here can guarantee a sighting. Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle and the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos both offer an aurora alarm, but that is a service, not a sighting.
Finland’s VAT on accommodation
The tax to know on a Finnish hotel bill is value-added tax. The Finnish Tax Administration lists accommodation (hotels, motels, hostels, farm stays and cottage rental) under the reduced rate, which was 14% until 31 December 2025 and is 13.5% from 2026.
| What | VAT rate in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Accommodation: hotels, hostels, cottage rental | 13.5% |
| Restaurant meals eaten on the premises, and taxis, buses and trains | 13.5% |
Our arithmetic, for a quoted rate that includes VAT: five nights at €200 a night is €1,000, and the VAT inside that total is 1,000 × 13.5 ÷ 113.5, or about €119. Check whether a quote includes VAT, and compare the final total, not the headline rate.
Getting in, and around
- By air. Rovaniemi Airport is 3 km from Santa Claus Village, which is 8 km north of the city centre. Finavia lists the Airport Express and Santa’s Express, running from the airport to Santa Claus Village and Rovaniemi Railway Station, with tickets sold on the bus. The operator lists an adult one-way Airport Express ticket at €8 and a child’s (4 to 12) at €4, says the service meets arriving flights between 9am and 9pm, and takes no cash on board: buy online or pay by card.
- By night train. VR runs the double-decker Santa Claus Express from Helsinki or Turku to Rovaniemi, with a seat or a sleeper cabin and wifi on board. VR’s page lists no times or fares, so search your dates on vr.fi.
- City bus 8. The city’s own transport page says bus 8 links Rovaniemi railway station, the centre and the Arctic Circle, and Santa Claus Village says it runs around the year. Tickets are sold in the Waltti app and by contactless card on board.
- Out-of-town hotels. Apukka runs a shuttle bus daily from September to April between the resort, Santa Claus Village and the city. The Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos offers a transfer from the city centre and the airport, about 35 to 40 minutes.
Rovaniemi city centre: restaurants, shops and the airport shuttle
The centre is the practical base. Three of the five hotels below are on Koskikatu, the airport shuttle stops here, and Visit Rovaniemi says the main stop for the city’s local buses is on Ruokasenkatu. Santa Claus Village is 8 km north by bus 8.
Where to stay in Rovaniemi city centre
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Scandic Rovaniemi City, comfortable. At Koskikatu 23, with the airport shuttle bus stopping in front, a gender-separated sauna from 5.30pm to 9.30pm and a 24-hour shop. - Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, comfortable. At Koskikatu 4, with 159 rooms, a sauna open daily from 6pm to 9pm and a room type called Arctic Circle and Christmas, at 21 m². Choose it for a large hotel in the middle of town. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Arctic Light Hotel, comfortable. A four-star boutique hotel in a historic building at Valtakatu 18; rates include a buffet breakfast, gym and sauna, and the airport bus stops across the street. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus, comfortable. A city hotel at Korkalonkatu 29 with breakfast daily, an à la carte restaurant, a bar and lounge, a café and sauna facilities. Choose it for a Christmas theme all year. Watch out: the hotel announced that its restaurant Gaissa was being renewed, so check the restaurant is open for your dates.
- Santa’s Hotel Rudolf, budget. At Koskikatu 41–43, described by Santa’s Hotels as a budget-friendly, no-fuss base. Choose it for a budget bed near the centre. Watch out: reception, breakfast and restaurant services are 600 m away at Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus.
Santa Claus Village: the Arctic Circle at your door
Santa Claus Village is on the Arctic Circle, and its own site says it is open every day. In the Christmas season the Santa Claus Office runs 8am to 8pm, the Main Post Office 9am to 8pm and the Christmas House Shop 7am to 10pm. Staying here puts all of it nearby; the cost is a bus ride into town.
Where to stay at Santa Claus Village
- Santa Claus Holiday Village, comfortable. A family-owned resort inside the village, with cottages, suites and glass igloo cottages, all with a private sauna and breakfast included. The Glass Igloo Cottage is 46 m² for up to four guests; the classic red cottages are 35 m². Choose it for a self-contained family stay. Watch out: the hotel says family accommodation and the glass igloo cottages are often booked well in advance, especially around Christmas. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle, splurge. A glass igloo hotel at Joulumaankuja 8, a few minutes’ walk from the village’s attractions. The igloos face north, every igloo has a northern lights alarm, some have a private sauna or outdoor hot tub, and the restaurant is Arctic Eye. Choose it for a glass roof within walking distance of the village. Watch out: the hotel warns of construction work near the igloos that you may occasionally see or hear.
- Arctic TreeHouse Hotel, splurge. A design hotel on the Arctic Circle, 8 km from the town centre, with suites, GlassHouses with their own sauna and panoramic windows. The bus 8 stop is in front, and the Christmas stay includes breakfast, festive lunches and dinners and Santa’s visit on Christmas Eve. Choose it for a set Christmas with the meals arranged. Watch out: the Christmas package is limited, needs three nights and is priced at the Best Available Rate. Check rates on Booking.com →
Apukka and the forest resorts: glass roofs in the trees
The forest resorts sit outside the town, away from street lights, and sell Christmas as a package: lodging, meals, activities and transfers. That suits a short, planned holiday and suits it less if you want to wander into town for dinner.
Where to stay at Apukka and the forest resorts
- Apukka Resort, splurge. At Tutkijantie 28, 18 km from the city centre and 10 km from the airport, open from 1 August 2026 to 4 April 2027. Its Aurora Cabins are 24 m² glass igloos for up to four guests, with a heated panoramic glass roof, a private bathroom and full curtains; it also offers Komsio and Kammi glass igloo suites, lakeview suites and Villa Apukka. Choose it for a Christmas package, as Christmas Magic under Aurora includes airport and station transfers. Watch out: the Christmas Magic under Aurora package needs four nights or more, and Best of Christmas three or more. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos, comfortable. At Lehtoahontie 27, a 30-minute drive (26 km) from the city centre, with 39 glass igloos. Each has underfloor heating, a glass roof with electric defrosting and an aurora alarm; the price includes a buffet breakfast, the public sauna and, from 15 December, entry to the SnowHotel. Choose it for an igloo and a snow hotel together. Watch out: the twin glass igloo is 20 m² with two single beds, as double beds are not possible, and the SnowHotel itself opens only on 15 December 2026. Check rates on Booking.com →
Ounasvaara: the hill by the river
Ounasvaara is the hill beside the town, with a ski resort, a sauna by the river and trails, and it is much closer than the forest resorts. The trade-off: the hotels are 3 to 4 km from the town centre by the hotels’ own figures, so check how you will get up the hill.
Where to stay at Ounasvaara
- Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara, comfortable. At the top of Ounasvaara, 4 km from the centre, 12 km from the airport and 11 km from Santa Claus Village; the nearest ski slope is 20 m away. It has rooms with saunas, family rooms and a panorama restaurant. Choose it for the view and a short step to the slopes. Watch out: the hotel is renovating its main entrance, which it says may occasionally be closed, with access then through the entrance on the left of the building. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Lapland Hotels Ounasvaara Chalets, good value. Cabins and holiday apartments between the Kemijoki river and the ski resort, 3 km from the centre; every one has a private sauna and a kitchen, and the slopes are 300 m away. Choose it for a family or group wanting space and its own sauna. Watch out: the WNTR Sauna’s December hours had not been announced when we checked. Check rates on Booking.com →
How to book Rovaniemi at Christmas
- Book now, and read the terms. We checked these hotels on 22 October 2026, about two months before Christmas. Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna’s season terms start on 16 November, and Santa Claus Holiday Village says its family rooms and glass igloo cottages are often booked well in advance around Christmas.
- Match the package to the night count. Arctic TreeHouse Hotel needs three nights for its Christmas package; Apukka needs four or more for Christmas Magic under Aurora.
- Choose the base by how you will move. Without a car, the centre and the village have a bus; the forest resorts mean transfers. Santa Claus Holiday Village says most guests stay three to five nights.
- Count the VAT. It is 13.5% on accommodation in 2026; check whether the rate you are quoted includes it.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and direct booking versus online agencies covers when to go direct.
