The Kentucky Derby is a two-day trip, not a one-day one. The organiser’s own 2027 ticket page says the Kentucky Oaks will take place on Friday, 30 April 2027, and the Derby on Saturday, 1 May 2027, and it sells reserved seats as a two-day package. That shapes the hotel bill: you are paying for at least the Friday and Saturday nights, and the Louisville room tax is stacked in layers. We found a state room tax, a Louisville Metro room tax and a state sales tax, and Indiana adds its own pair across the river.

This guide covers what the organiser has published for 2027 and what it has not yet, five areas, 12 hotels, and how race-day transport worked last year. For the rest of the United States, see where to stay in Chicago. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in November 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

The 2027 Derby: dates and tickets

The organiser’s home page says the Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday 1 May 2027, and its ticket page says the Kentucky Oaks will take place on Friday, 30 April 2027, both at Churchill Downs. That matches the first-Saturday-in-May pattern, so the date is published rather than expected.

What the ticket page says about buying:

What we did not find: any minimum-stay rule or price schedule published by the organiser, and none of the hotel pages we read for this guide states a Derby minimum. Treat any claim of one as something to confirm with the hotel in writing.

Getting to Churchill Downs: last year’s arrangements

The organiser’s travel and parking page still described the 2026 Derby Week when we checked, so everything below is last year’s race, held on Saturday 2 May 2026, not a promise for 2027.

Downtown and Fourth Street: bars, restaurants and the river

Downtown is the base for people who want to be out in the evening without a car. The four hotels below are all in the downtown core, and the Omni’s own page puts Main Street, Fourth Street Live, Whiskey Row distilleries and the Louisville Slugger Museum less than a mile away. The trade-off is the journey to the track, which on race days depends on the shuttle and rideshare rules above, so plan how you will leave.

How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.

NuLu: galleries and East Market Street

NuLu is the East Market District, east of the downtown core. The AC Hotel’s own page describes it as known for unique art galleries, specialty shops and mouth-watering cuisine, and says Waterfront Park, the KFC Yum! Center and the Louisville Slugger Museum are within an easy 10-minute drive.

The Highlands: Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue

The Highlands centres on Bardstown Road, which the Bellwether’s own page calls “Louisville’s Greatest Street”. Neither hotel’s page gives a distance to Churchill Downs, so work out the drive for your day before you book.

Near Churchill Downs and the airport: the shortest trip to the track

The hotels around the airport and the Kentucky Exposition Center are the practical choice for people who want a short drive to the track, and the Exposition Center is where the organiser’s shuttle ran from last year. They are chain hotels in the airport area.

Jeffersonville, Indiana: across the Ohio River

Jeffersonville is in Indiana, so the tax is different, and the drive to the track crosses the river. Both hotels are on the north side of town, off the interstate. The Hilton Garden Inn’s own page says Churchill Downs is 15 minutes away; the Holiday Inn Express describes itself as just north of downtown Louisville.

Getting in from the airport

The airport is Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF). Its own ground-transport page says Lyft and Uber pick up on the baggage-claim level, on the west side of the terminal, and that taxis wait at the commercial curb outside baggage claim, with zTrip listed. The page also lists hotel courtesy vans. Hilton’s page for its airport hotel places the airport corridor on I-65, seven miles south of downtown Louisville. We found no official fare table for the ride, so check the app or the cab company for your date.

Louisville’s hotel taxes: three layers, and Indiana’s two

Charge Rate Applies to
Kentucky transient room tax 1% of the rent Statewide
Louisville Metro transient room tax 8.5% of the rent Hotels in Louisville Metro
Kentucky sales tax 6% The state’s room-tax page says the room tax is in addition to it
Tourism Improvement District assessment 1.5% of gross room sales Hotels with 51 or more rooms; we could not confirm whether it appears as a guest charge
Indiana sales tax 7% Retail sales in Indiana
Indiana county innkeeper’s tax 6% in Clark County Stays under 30 days, in addition to state sales tax

Here is our arithmetic, not a quote from any hotel. On a $400 room in Louisville, if the sales tax, the 1% state tax and the 8.5% Metro tax each apply to the rent, that is 15.5%, or $62, for a total of $462. The state’s guidance says the transient taxes are reported as part of taxable receipts for the sales tax, so if a hotel charges sales tax on top of the room taxes, the bill is $438 plus 6% of that, or $26.28 more, which comes to $464.28. On a $200 room in Jeffersonville, 7% sales tax plus 6% county tax is 13%, or $26, for $226. Hotels bill differently, so use the total at the payment step. We could not confirm from any hotel page whether the 1.5% assessment is passed on to guests.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Kentucky Derby in 2027?

The organiser says the Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday 1 May 2027 and the Kentucky Oaks on Friday 30 April 2027, both at Churchill Downs. Its ticket page sells reserved seats as a two-day package covering both days.

How many nights do I need for the Kentucky Derby?

The organiser's two-day package includes the same reserved seat for the Oaks on Friday and Derby Day on Saturday, so most ticket-holders need at least the Friday and Saturday nights. The organiser publishes no minimum stay, and none of the hotel pages we read states a Derby minimum, so confirm with the hotel in writing.

How do I get to Churchill Downs on Derby day?

The organiser's travel page still described the 2026 Derby Week when we checked, so 2027 arrangements are not yet published. Last year frontside ticket-holders had a free shuttle from the Kentucky Exposition Center, and the page said there was no onsite rideshare or taxi access on the Oaks and Derby days, pointing riders to the Bronze Lot at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium.

What hotel taxes will I pay in Louisville?

Louisville Metro charges an 8.5% transient room tax and Kentucky charges a 1% state room tax, in addition to the 6% state sales tax, by the state's own page. Hotels with 51 or more rooms also pay a 1.5% Tourism Improvement District assessment, and we could not confirm whether it shows on a guest bill. On a $400 room, our arithmetic gives $62 to $64.28 in tax.

Is it cheaper to stay in Indiana for the Derby?

The tax is lower. In Jeffersonville, in Clark County, the county innkeeper's tax is 6% and Indiana sales tax is 7%, which our arithmetic makes 13%, or $26 on a $200 room, against 15.5% in Louisville. You will cross the Ohio River to reach the track, and we found no official 2027 drive-time or transport details.

Is it safe to buy Derby tickets from resale sites?

The organiser says tickets are non-refundable and that the only authorized place to buy and resell Derby and Oaks tickets is the Kentucky Derby Ticket Exchange. We recommend using the organiser's official channels only.
