Athens hotel bills carry a charge set by the room, not the guest: the climate crisis resilience fee, from €2 to €15 a night between April and October, depending on the hotel’s stars. It does not change with the number of guests. Four nights in a four-star hotel in July add €40 to the bill. Where you stay decides the rest, in walking time and in how you reach the airport and the ferries.

This guide covers six areas, from Plaka to Piraeus, 12 hotels, the airport links and the fee. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

Athens’s climate crisis resilience fee in 2026

Greece’s climate crisis resilience fee replaced the old accommodation tax on 1 January 2024. The rates for hotels are set in article 44 of Law 5177/2025 (Government Gazette, issue A’ 21, 14 February 2025), and the tax authority, AADE, still cites that article in its guidance of January 2026. The fee is charged per room per night, and the amount depends on the hotel’s stars and on the month:

Hotel category April to October November to March
1 and 2 stars €2 €0.50
3 stars €5 €1.50
4 stars €10 €3
5 stars €15 €4

The hotel collects the fee from the guest after the stay and before departure, and issues a separate receipt for it; for a stay that runs across two months, AADE says one receipt is issued for each month. The fee carries no VAT, and it is not charged when the stay itself is free. We found no amendment to these rates after the January 2026 guidance, but Greek rules change, so confirm with the hotel.

Worked example (our arithmetic): four nights in a four-star hotel in July cost 4 × €10 = €40, whether one person or three share the room. The same four nights in January cost 4 × €3 = €12. Among our picks, Hotel Attalos describes itself as a three-star (€5 a night in season), the Herodion as a four-star (€10) and Electra Palace as a five-star (€15).

Getting in from the airport, and around

Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), is east of the city. The fares below are from OASA, the Athens urban transport authority, and we checked them on 19 October 2026.

Plaka: the first-trip base

Plaka is the old quarter under the Acropolis: narrow streets, small museums and tavernas. OASA puts it 450 m from Acropolis metro station and 650 m from Monastiraki. It is the area to choose if you want to walk to most of the old city and come back to a quiet street.

How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.

Syntagma: Parliament and the metro hub

Syntagma Square is where the X95 airport bus arrives, and it has its own metro station. OASA lists the Hellenic Parliament 300 m from the station, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 130 m and the Benaki Museum 650 m. It is central and easy to reach from the airport, but it is a city-centre square, not a village quarter.

Monastiraki and Psyrri: rooftops and nightlife

Monastiraki is the square around the metro station. OASA lists the Ancient Agora 220 m from the station, Psyrri 230 m and Plaka 650 m, and A for Athens counts Psyrri, Monastiraki and Plaka among the nightlife districts within five minutes’ walk of the hotel. It suits you if you want evenings out close to your bed.

Koukaki and Makrygianni: the Acropolis Museum

Koukaki borders the southern section of the Acropolis, Philopappos Hill and Plaka, and Makrygianni is the adjoining area around the Acropolis Museum. OASA lists the museum 130 m from Acropolis metro station. It is the base to choose for the museum and the walk up to the rock.

Kolonaki: boutiques and Lycabettus

Kolonaki lies at the foot of Lycabettus Hill, with designer boutiques, independent galleries and café terraces, by the account of St. George Lycabettus. OASA lists the War Museum 250 m from Evangelismos metro station, the Byzantine and Christian Museum 300 m and the Museum of Cycladic Art 550 m. It is the area to choose for museums, shopping and a hill walk, rather than the ancient sites.

Piraeus: for the ferries

Piraeus is Athens’s port, a city of its own on the coast. It makes sense only if you sail the next morning: OASA lists the port 450 m from Piraeus metro station. The X96 airport express runs to Piraeus in about 90 minutes, by OASA’s estimate, and the suburban railway also links the airport with the port. From May to October the X80 bus runs between Piraeus, the Acropolis and Syntagma from 07:00 to 21:30 every 30 minutes, and OASA says you can use it only with a daily or tourist ticket.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Athens for a first trip?

Plaka, the old quarter under the Acropolis, which OASA puts 450 m from Acropolis metro station and 650 m from Monastiraki. Choose Syntagma for the X95 airport bus, Koukaki and Makrygianni for the Acropolis Museum, Kolonaki for boutiques and Lycabettus Hill, and Piraeus only if you sail the next morning.

How much is the hotel fee in Athens?

The climate crisis resilience fee is €2 for a 1 or 2-star hotel, €5 for 3 stars, €10 for 4 stars and €15 for 5 stars per room per night from April to October, and €0.50, €1.50, €3 and €4 from November to March. Four nights in a four-star hotel in July add €40.

Is the Greek climate resilience fee charged per person?

No. It is charged per room per night, so the amount does not change with the number of guests. The hotel collects it after the stay and before departure, issues a separate receipt, and adds no VAT; it is not charged when the stay itself is free.

How do you get from Athens airport to the centre?

By metro line 3 to downtown Athens: the airport ticket is €9 one way or €16 for a return valid for 30 days. The X95 express bus runs 24 hours to Syntagma for €5.50 and takes about 60 minutes, by OASA's estimate. The suburban railway also links the airport with Athens Railway Station and Piraeus.

How much is a taxi from Athens airport to the city centre?

A Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport decision, reported by the Greek press in mid-September 2026, raised the fixed fare from the airport to central Athens from €40 to €50, and from €55 to €65 between midnight and 5am. We could not open the gazette text, so confirm the fare at the rank.

Where should you stay in Athens for the ferries?

Piraeus. OASA lists the port 450 m from Piraeus metro station, and the X96 airport express takes about 90 minutes to Piraeus. Piraeus is not the old centre, so stay there only if you sail early; from May to October the X80 bus runs between Piraeus, the Acropolis and Syntagma.
