Banff sits inside a national park, so the bill has layers that a normal town does not. Alberta’s tourism levy on a hotel room rose from 4% to 6% on 1 April 2026, GST adds 5%, and everyone who stays in the park also needs a Parks Canada pass, C$12.25 a day for an adult. Alberta has no provincial sales tax.

This guide covers the three ski areas and how each is reached, four places to base yourself, 12 hotels from a hostel to a 724-room castle, the levy and park pass, and the buses from Calgary. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

The 2026/27 ski season: three areas, three ways to reach them

Banff has no single resort. Three separate ski areas sit within the national park, and where you sleep decides how you reach them.

Ski area Season (its own site) How it is reached from Banff
Lake Louise Ski Resort Opens 6 November 2026, season pass runs to 2 May 2027; lifts 9:30 am to 4:30 pm About 60 km, 40 minutes by road; free winter shuttles from Lake Louise and Banff, with the 2026/27 schedule “posted shortly”
Banff Sunshine Village Opening day not stated on the hours page we read; chair lifts 9:30 am to 4:30 pm About 8 km west of Banff on the Trans-Canada Highway; a free shuttle runs daily from the town of Banff
Mt Norquay Opening 6 November 2026 The resort says it is only 7 minutes from Banff; a free shuttle runs from the train station and several hotels

Norquay’s winter timetable lists two routes. Route 1 picks up at Canalta Lodge, Caribou Lodge, The Fox, The Kenrick, Ptarmigan Inn and the Banff train station, and Route 2 at the Banff Springs Hotel, the Mt Royal parking lot and Scout Hall/Peaks, with buses reaching the mountain about 10 minutes after the station stop. The service is first come, first served. Sunshine Mountain Lodge, which Sunshine calls Banff’s only ski-in, ski-out hotel, is on the mountain 8 km from town and is not one of our twelve.

The levy, GST and park pass

Three charges apply to a stay in Banff, and none is a Town of Banff hotel tax; we found no separate municipal tax on the official pages we read.

Charge Amount Applies to
Alberta tourism levy 6% The purchase price of accommodation, including cleaning, pet, extra-bed and booking or online-broker fees; 4% for bookings made before 1 April 2026
GST 5% Hotel rooms; Alberta has no provincial sales tax
Parks Canada daily pass C$12.25 adult, C$10.75 senior, youth 17 and under free, C$24.50 family or group in one vehicle Anyone spending time in the park, including stops in towns and villages

The province says the levy does not apply to a stay of 28 days or more by the same person. A daily pass is valid until 4:00 pm the day after you buy it, and the annual Discovery Pass costs C$83.50 for an adult, which is less than the C$85.75 that seven adult daily passes would cost, by our arithmetic. Parks Canada says to buy a pass if you stop in towns and villages, and the free-admission window of 19 June to 7 September 2026 has ended, so a winter stay needs one.

A worked example, our arithmetic: a C$300 room costs C$18.00 in levy and C$15.00 in GST, so C$333.00 a night if both are worked out on the room price. We could not find an official statement on whether GST is also charged on the levy; if it is, add C$0.90. Hotel fees are separate: Lake Louise Inn says a daily resort fee is included in all reservations, and Mount Royal and Coast Canmore list parking at $10 a night. See hotel taxes around the world for how this compares.

Banff town centre: Banff Avenue and the shuttles

Banff Avenue is the main street, with the restaurants and shops on foot. Staying here means you can reach the Roam local buses and Norquay’s shuttle without a car.

How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.

Tunnel Mountain and Spray Avenue: the hillside and the castle

Tunnel Mountain Road climbs above the town, and the Fairmont sits at the other end on Spray Avenue. Roam’s Route 2 runs year round between Tunnel Mountain, downtown Banff and the Fairmont Banff Springs, and the Fairmont is a stop on Norquay’s Route 2 shuttle.

Lake Louise village: the ski hill and the lake

Lake Louise is 60 km and about 40 minutes from Banff, and 2 hours from Calgary by road. Roam’s Lake Louise Express stops at both Lake Louise Village and the Lakeshore, and in winter the Village-to-Lakeshore leg can be paid only with exact cash on the bus. Moraine Lake closed after 13 October until spring, and Roam says no ticket includes access to it until 1 June.

Canmore: the value base outside the park

Canmore sits just outside the park gates. Coast Canmore describes it as minutes from the gates and about 20 minutes from Banff town, and the Roam Route 3 bus runs daily between downtown Canmore and downtown Banff for $6 an adult single or $15 a day. The saving is on the room, not the airport: Banff Airporter’s winter fare to Canmore is C$85.90 against C$88.90 to Banff. You will need a park pass on any day you go into Banff or Lake Louise. Coast Canmore’s own guide says staying here avoids higher prices; we have not compared rates, so check your dates.

Getting in from Calgary, and around

Calgary International Airport is about 130 km from Banff, and Buffalo Mountain Lodge puts the drive at 1.5 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Banff for a first trip?

Banff town centre, along Banff Avenue: the restaurants and shops are on foot, and Norquay's free ski shuttle stops at several hotels there. Tunnel Mountain and Spray Avenue suit a quieter hillside stay or the Fairmont, Lake Louise village suits ski days at Lake Louise, and Canmore is a base outside the park gates, about 20 minutes from Banff town.

What taxes are added to a Banff hotel room?

Alberta's tourism levy is 6% of the purchase price of accommodation for bookings made after 31 March 2026 (4% before), and GST adds 5%. Alberta has no provincial sales tax. For example, a C$300 room costs C$333.00 a night by our arithmetic if both are worked out on the room price; we could not confirm whether GST is also charged on the levy, which would add C$0.90.

Do I need a park pass to stay in Banff?

Yes. Parks Canada says to buy a pass if you spend time in a national park, including stops in towns and villages. An adult daily pass is C$12.25 (seniors C$10.75, youth 17 and under free, family or group C$24.50) and is valid until 4:00 pm the day after purchase; the annual Discovery Pass is C$83.50 for an adult. The free-admission window of 19 June to 7 September 2026 has ended.

How do you get from Calgary airport to Banff?

Banff Airporter's winter fare is C$88.90 one way for an adult to Banff and C$85.90 to Canmore, before GST, with buses leaving Calgary from 9:00 am and reaching Banff in 2 hours. Brewster Express runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 to Banff, Canmore and Lake Louise, with fares from CA$66.75 one way based on a round trip, excluding taxes and fees.

How do you reach the Banff ski areas without a car?

Mt Norquay and Banff Sunshine each run a free shuttle from the town of Banff, and Norquay's stops include the train station, Ptarmigan Inn and the Banff Springs Hotel. Lake Louise Ski Resort lists free winter shuttles between the resort and the communities of Lake Louise and Banff, with its 2026/27 schedule still to be posted. Lake Louise Inn also lists a complimentary winter shuttle to the resort.

Is Canmore a cheaper place to stay than Banff?

Coast Canmore's own guide says staying in Canmore avoids higher prices and crowds, but we have not compared rates, so check your dates. Canmore is outside the park gates, about 20 minutes from Banff town, and Roam's Route 3 bus runs daily for $6 an adult single or a $15 day pass. You still need a park pass on days you go into Banff or Lake Louise.
