Chamonix is a valley, not a single base, and the lifts sit in different villages, so where you sleep decides how much of your ski day is spent on a bus. The hotel bill also carries the taxe de séjour, a per-person, per-night tourist tax that the valley’s local authority sets by star rating: €2.60 per adult per night for a four-star hotel in 2026, added on top of the room rate. The lift operator’s own live page on 30 October 2026 shows the main areas reopening between 28 November and 19 December.

This guide covers the lifts and the season, five areas, 12 hotels from a two-star chalet hotel to a five-star Relais & Châteaux estate, the tax and the guest card, and the way in from Geneva. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked on its own website in October 2026. Where a hotel publishes winter dates we give them; where it does not, we say so, because some are closed this month or open only from December. No hotel pays to appear here.

The short answer

If you want… Stay in Why
restaurants, the station and the buses on foot Chamonix centre Five hotels in the middle of town, with the lifts a short bus ride away
a quieter edge with the Flégère lifts close Le Bouchet and Les Praz One five-star estate just outside the centre and a hotel 250 m from the Flégère lifts
the Grands Montets lift beside the hotel Argentière One hotel at the start of the Grands Montets car park and one in the village
lower prices, free parking and a ski shuttle Les Houches and Les Bossons Three hotels with free parking or a free shuttle, on the Les Houches side of the valley
the Balme ski area from the door Le Tour and Vallorcine The valley’s far end; we could not confirm a hotel’s winter opening on its own site, so none is listed

The 2026/27 season and the lift pass

Mont-Blanc Natural Resort, the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc’s visitor site, had not published a 2026/27 winter brochure or day-pass prices when we looked on 30 October 2026: its winter section still pointed to the 2025/26 press kit. What it does show is a live status page, and that page gives these reopening dates, all subject to snow.

Area Reopening on the operator’s live page
Flégère (Les Praz side) Partial reopening on 28 November, snow permitting
Grands Montets (Argentière) 5 December
Balme (Le Tour and Vallorcine gondolas) 12 December
Les Houches - Saint-Gervais 19 December
Brévent No winter date given; its lifts were on autumn opening hours on 30 October

Two season-pass products are on sale in a limited offer running from 20 October to 30 November 2026. CHAMONIX Le Pass covers Brévent-Flégère, Balme and the Grands Montets, plus the beginner areas. MONT BLANC Unlimited adds Les Houches - Saint-Gervais, Evasion Mont Blanc and sites including Aiguille du Midi, and its adult season pass is listed at €1,466 in the offer. We saw no 2026/27 day-pass price.

Chamonix centre: the main street and the buses

The centre puts you among the shops, restaurants and the SNCF station, with the Chamonix Mobilité bus station here too. The cable car to the Aiguille du Midi also leaves from the centre. Several hotels sit along the Allée du Majestic by the tourist office, and the Park Hôtel Suisse & Spa puts the bus stops for the villages and ski areas under 100 m from its door.

How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.

Le Bouchet and Les Praz: the quieter edge

Le Hameau Albert 1er is on the Route du Bouchet and calls itself close to the centre of Chamonix; Les Praz is the hamlet towards Argentière, with its own station on the Mont-Blanc Express and the Flégère lifts above it. Both suit a stay where you ski the Flégère side and come home to quiet.

Argentière: the Grands Montets lift

Argentière is the village at the foot of the Grands Montets, the area the operator lists as reopening on 5 December. It sits on the Mont-Blanc Express line, so the valley’s other villages are a train ride away.

Les Houches and Les Bossons: free parking and a ski shuttle

Les Bossons and Les Houches lie on the Saint-Gervais side of the valley, on the same railway line as the centre. Les Houches reopens last, on 19 December, so this side suits a Christmas or January trip.

Le Tour and Vallorcine: the far end

Balme is the ski area at the northern end, reached by gondola from Le Tour or from Vallorcine, and the operator lists both gondolas as reopening on 12 December. We found hotels in Vallorcine but none whose own website confirmed winter 2026/27 opening, so we have left them out. The guest card covers the Mont-Blanc Express to Vallorcine, so a day out from the centre works.

The taxe de séjour and the guest card

The taxe de séjour is set by the Communauté de communes de la Vallée de Chamonix Mont-Blanc, which covers Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Les Houches, Servoz and Vallorcine, in a deliberation of 3 June 2025 that applies from 1 January 2026. It is charged per person per night, and your host collects it on top of the room rate.

Accommodation Tax per person per night, 2026
Palace €4.90
5-star hotel €3.60
4-star hotel €2.60
3-star hotel €1.70
2-star hotel €1.00
1-star hotel, guest house €0.80
Unclassified or awaiting classification 5% of the pre-tax nightly cost per person, capped at €4.90

Minors, seasonal workers employed in the commune, people in emergency housing and people occupying premises with rent under €5 a night are exempt. The Communauté’s grid, deliberation and poster list these rates and no departmental surcharge. We did not find a Haute-Savoie decision on one, so check your invoice against the grid. We read the 2026 grid; a grid for stays from January 2027 was not on the page we read, so check it for a trip then.

A worked example, our arithmetic: two adults and a ten-year-old for four nights in a four-star hotel pay 2 × €2.60 × 4 = €20.80, because the child is exempt. On a room we have assumed at €400 a night, four nights come to €1,600, so the tax is 1.3% of the bill. In an unclassified hotel with a room at an assumed €300 before tax for two, the per-person cost is €150, 5% of that is €7.50, the cap of €4.90 applies, and the tax is 2 × €4.90 × 4 = €39.20. See hotel taxes around the world and the 2026 tourist-tax data report for comparisons.

The guest card, the carte d’hôte, is handed to you by your accommodation host on arrival. The tourist office says it gives free travel on the SNCF Mont-Blanc Express between Servoz and Vallorcine while the card is valid, and discounts of up to 50% on Chamonix Mobilité bus passes. It is not a bus ticket, it has no discount on single tickets or on night buses after 21:00, and each traveller needs one except children under 4. The tourist office’s examples are €5 for a 2-day bus ticket, €8 for 5 days and €10 for a week. If you hold a valid lift pass, you scan that on the bus and need no ticket.

Getting to Chamonix and around

Geneva Airport is the usual gateway, 88 km away according to the tourist office. The office adds that winter rules apply on the road: from 1 November to 31 March, light vehicles must carry snow chains or run four winter tyres.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Chamonix for skiing?

It depends on the lift. Chamonix centre puts you among the restaurants, the station and the bus station, Le Bouchet and Les Praz are the quieter edge with the Flégère lifts close, Argentière has hotels at the foot of the Grands Montets, and Les Houches and Les Bossons have hotels with free parking or a ski shuttle. We could not confirm a winter 2026/27 hotel opening on its own website in Le Tour or Vallorcine, so none is listed there.

When do the Chamonix ski areas open in 2026/27?

The operator had not published a 2026/27 winter brochure on 30 October 2026, but its live status page gave these reopening dates, all subject to snow: partial reopening of Flégère on 28 November, Grands Montets on 5 December, Balme on 12 December and Les Houches - Saint-Gervais on 19 December. It gave no winter date for Brévent.

How much is a Chamonix ski pass in 2026/27?

We saw no 2026/27 day-pass price, because the operator had not published its winter brochure. Its limited offer from 20 October to 30 November 2026 lists the adult MONT BLANC Unlimited season pass at €1,466. CHAMONIX Le Pass covers Brévent-Flégère, Balme and the Grands Montets.

How much is the tourist tax in Chamonix?

The 2026 taxe de séjour is set per person per night by star category: €4.90 for a Palace, €3.60 for five stars, €2.60 for four stars, €1.70 for three, €1.00 for two and €0.80 for one star. Unclassified accommodation pays 5% of the pre-tax nightly cost per person, capped at €4.90. Minors are exempt, so two adults and a ten-year-old for four nights in a four-star hotel pay €20.80, by our arithmetic.

What does the Chamonix guest card give you?

The carte d'hôte is handed over by your accommodation host on arrival. The tourist office says it gives free travel on the SNCF Mont-Blanc Express between Servoz and Vallorcine and discounts of up to 50% on Chamonix Mobilité bus passes. It is not a bus ticket, and it gives no discount on single tickets or night buses after 21:00.

How do you get from Geneva Airport to Chamonix?

Geneva Airport is 88 km away, according to the tourist office. Mountain Drop-offs lists shared door-to-door transfers from €45.50 per person, taking around 1 hour 15 minutes, and the tourist office names FlixBus as running daily. By rail, the Léman Express links the airport to Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet, where the Mont-Blanc Express continues to Chamonix.
