Naples adds a tourist tax to every hotel bill, set by the star rating of the hotel. From 1 May 2026 the city’s rate is €6 per person per night in a four- or five-star hotel, so two adults in a four-star hotel for three nights pay €36 on top of the room price. Where you stay decides the rest of the cost, in walking time, hills and ferry connections.

This guide covers six areas, from the old town to the hill of Posillipo, 12 hotels, the airport and port links and the tax. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in November 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

Naples’s tourist tax

Italian cities set their own imposta di soggiorno. In Naples the Giunta Comunale approved new rates by resolution 89 of 12 March 2026, and the comune publishes them in two steps for 2026:

Category Per person, per night, from 1 January 2026 Per person, per night, from 1 May 2026
5-star and 5-star luxury hotels €5.00 €6.00
4-star hotels €5.00 €6.00
3-star hotels €4.50 €5.50
2-star hotels €3.50 €4.50
1-star hotels €3.00 €4.00
Other lodging (B&Bs, guesthouses) €4.50 €5.50
Short-term rentals €5.00 €6.00

The comune says the tax is paid per person and per night up to a maximum of 14 consecutive nights, and by guests older than 14 who are not residents. The comune describes the 2026 update as a €1 rise allowed by the 2026 budget law. We found no published 2027 schedule, so treat the €6 and €5.50 rates as the latest we could see and ask the hotel to confirm.

Our arithmetic, not an official figure: two adults staying three nights in a four-star hotel would pay €36 in tax at the May 2026 rate (2 people x 3 nights x €6). In a three-star hotel it would be €33 (2 x 3 x €5.50).

Getting in from the airport and the port, and around

Centro Storico: the first-trip base

The historic centre is the Naples of narrow, busy streets, churches and pizzerias, laid out on the old Roman street grid that locals call the Decumani, with Spaccanapoli running straight through it. It is loud, dense and best on foot.

How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.

Toledo and the Quartieri Spagnoli: squares, shops and the opera house

Via Toledo is the long shopping street that links the old town with Piazza del Plebiscito, and the Quartieri Spagnoli are the dense grid of narrow streets climbing the hill to its west. The area has the opera house, the arcade of Galleria Umberto I and the Toledo metro station.

Chiaia and the Lungomare: the seafront and the castle

Chiaia is the district west of Piazza del Plebiscito, with Via Chiaia’s shops and the long seafront promenade of Via Partenope, where the big hotels face Castel dell’Ovo and the bay. It is more open than the old town.

Vomero: the hill above the city

Vomero is the hill above the centre, with Castel Sant’Elmo at its crown and broad views over the city and the bay. It is quieter than the old town, and the funiculars connect it to the streets below.

Where to stay near Vomero

Piazza Garibaldi and Napoli Centrale: the practical base

Piazza Garibaldi is the square in front of the main station, and it is built for arriving and leaving: the train station, the Alibus stop and the Circumvesuviana are all here, and the old town is a bus or metro ride away. It is a working transport district rather than a sightseeing one, and conditions vary from block to block, so read recent guest comments about the specific street before you book.

Posillipo: the bay at sunset

Posillipo is the hill that curves along the western end of the bay, a residential district of villas and terraces with views over the gulf. It is outside the walkable centre, so you trade the old streets for the view and plan on taxis or buses into town.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Naples for a first trip?

Centro Storico, the old town: Spaccanapoli and the Decumani streets are at the door, and Via Toledo is a walk away. Choose Toledo and the Quartieri Spagnoli for the shops and the opera house, Chiaia and the Lungomare for the seafront, and Vomero for a quieter hillside base.

How much is the tourist tax in Naples?

It depends on the hotel's star rating. From 1 May 2026 the comune lists €6.00 per person per night in 4- and 5-star hotels, €5.50 in 3-star, €4.50 in 2-star and €4.00 in 1-star hotels, up to 14 consecutive nights, for guests older than 14. Two adults in a four-star hotel for three nights pay €36. We found no 2027 schedule, so confirm with the hotel.

How do you get from Naples airport to the city centre?

Take the Alibus from Capodichino airport. A single ride costs €5.00, and ANM lists about 15 minutes to Piazza Garibaldi (Napoli Centrale) and about 35 minutes to the port, with a first departure at 5.30, a last at 00.00 and intervals of up to 15 minutes.

Where do the ferries to Capri and Ischia leave from?

From the port. NLG's hydrofoil from Molo Beverello to Capri lists an adult fare of €25 one way, plus a Capri landing contribution of €2.50 from 1 November to 30 March and €5 from 1 April to 31 October. Alilauro lists adult fares of €22.00 and €22.80 on its Molo Beverello to Ischia page, and Caremar lists its Naples to Ischia hydrofoil at €21.60. The Alibus stops at Molo Beverello.

Is Piazza Garibaldi a good area to stay in Naples?

It is the practical base: the station, the Alibus stop and the Circumvesuviana are all there. It is a working transport district rather than a sightseeing one, and conditions vary from block to block, so read recent guest comments about the specific street before you book.

How do you get from Naples airport to Sorrento?

Curreri Viaggi's airport shuttle runs between Naples airport and Sorrento station for €13. The Campania Express also lists a Naples to Sorrento service; check the rail operator for the fare.
