Rome adds its own charge to every hotel bill: the contributo di soggiorno, a city tax per person and per night that rises with the hotel’s star rating, from €4 at a one-star to €10 at a five-star. Easter 2027 adds a second question. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, so Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday on 21 March, and the papal ceremonies sit on two sides of the city: most at St Peter’s, and the Good Friday Way of the Cross at the Colosseum. When we checked on 3 November 2026 the Vatican had not published its 2027 programme, so this guide gives the dates by our arithmetic and the times of the 2026 programme, labelled as last year’s.
This guide covers five areas, 12 hotels, the Vatican’s free-ticket system, the Vatican Museums’ Easter closures, the airport trains and the tax. For the rest of a Rome trip, where to stay in Rome covers six areas and 12 hotels, 8 of which also appear here. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in November 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

Holy Week 2027: what the Vatican has and has not published
The Vatican’s Office of Liturgical Celebrations published the 2026 Holy Week programme in a notice dated 7 March 2026, 22 days before Palm Sunday, and the Vatican’s Holy Week page for 2026 lists the times. We found no 2027 programme as of 3 November 2026. The 2027 dates below are our arithmetic from Easter Sunday on 28 March; the times and venues are last year’s, and they may change.
| Celebration | 2027 date (our arithmetic) | The 2026 programme, last year’s |
|---|---|---|
| Palm Sunday Mass | Sunday 21 March | 10:00, St Peter’s Square |
| Chrism Mass | Thursday 25 March | 9:30, St Peter’s Basilica |
| Holy Thursday evening Mass | Thursday 25 March | 17:30, St John Lateran |
| Good Friday, Celebration of the Passion | Friday 26 March | 17:00, St Peter’s Basilica |
| Good Friday, Way of the Cross | Friday 26 March | The Colosseum, 21:00 in the Office’s notice, 21:15 on the Vatican’s Holy Week page |
| Easter Vigil | Saturday 27 March | 21:00, St Peter’s Basilica |
| Easter Sunday Mass | Sunday 28 March | 10:15, St Peter’s Square |
| Urbi et Orbi blessing | Sunday 28 March | 12:00, Central Loggia of St Peter’s Basilica |
Two things follow for the hotel. The Good Friday evening has two sites, the Basilica at 17:00 and the Colosseum at about 21:00, and the Vigil ends late. A hotel within walking distance of one is not within walking distance of the other.
How the free tickets work
The Vatican’s own page says tickets for the General Audiences and the Holy Father’s liturgical celebrations are always free of charge. Lay visitors request them through the Prefecture of the Papal Household’s online portal, eventi.pontificalisdomus.va; bishops, priests and deacons use a separate portal run by the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations. Any price you are quoted is for a service, not for the ticket.
What we could not find is an official statement of which Holy Week celebrations need a lay ticket. The 2026 notice names tickets only for concelebrating priests and deacons, and notifications for members of the Pontifical Chapel; it is silent on the public. The Prefecture’s pages give no request deadline either. Two hotels in this guide explain the process on their own sites: Palazzo Cardinal Cesi says tickets are free and are requested from the Prefecture, and Hotel Bramante says tickets are collected at the Bronze Door of the Vatican. Check the Prefecture’s portal when the 2027 programme appears, and book a hotel with free cancellation until then.
The Vatican Museums at Easter
The Vatican Museums publish a 2026 and 2027 calendar of closure days. For March 2027 it marks four: every Sunday (7, 14, 21 and 28 March), Friday 19 March and Monday 29 March, which is Easter Monday by our arithmetic. It marks nothing on Thursday 25, Friday 26 or Saturday 27 March. The museums’ price and hours page gives Monday to Saturday opening from 8:00 to 20:00, last entry at 18:00, and the last Sunday of the month is normally free; on 28 March 2027 it is Easter Sunday and the calendar shows the museums closed.
What the bill includes: the city tax
Every hotel collects the contributo di soggiorno for Roma Capitale, per person and per night. The city’s rate table has applied since 1 October 2023, and we found no official notice of a change for 2026 or 2027:
| Where you stay | Per person, per night |
|---|---|
| Five-star hotel | €10 |
| Four-star hotel | €7.50 |
| Three-star hotel | €6 |
| Two-star hotel | €5 |
| One-star hotel | €4 |
| Bed and breakfast | €6 |
| Guest houses and holiday apartments | €5 to €7, by category |
| Hostels | €3.50 in the table |
The rate table caps the charge at 10 nights in the same property. Children are exempt until their tenth birthday. Hostels are the one grey area: the table lists €3.50, but the city’s regulation exempts guests of youth hostels, so ask a hostel which applies.
As our arithmetic, a couple staying the seven nights from 21 to 28 March pays 2 × 7 × €7.50 = €105 at a four-star, €84 at a three-star and €140 at a five-star. A family of four with two children under 10 pays for two people. Several of our hotels do not publish a star rating on their own sites, so the hotel can tell you which rate applies.
Getting in from the airports, and around
- From Fiumicino, the Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Termini in about 32 minutes, every 15 minutes, for €14, according to Trenitalia. Four tickets bought together cost €40, and integrated Metrebus tickets are not valid on it. The airport operator lists the first train from the airport at 05:38 and the last at 23:27.
- From Ciampino, Ciampino Airlink combines a bus of about 10 minutes to Ciampino station with a train to Termini, €2.70 for both, according to Trenitalia.
- In town, a BIT ticket costs €1.50 and lasts 100 minutes; ATAC’s 24, 48 and 72-hour tickets cost €8.50, €15 and €22. You can also tap a contactless card at the metro gates and on surface vehicles.
- To St Peter’s by metro, line A has stops at Ottaviano and at Cipro on the Vatican side, and runs through Termini, Repubblica, Barberini and Spagna. Hotel dei Consoli says Ottaviano is 150 metres from its door.
- On the day, we found no official 2027 traffic or transport notice for the days around the Vatican. Check ATAC and the Vatican’s notices in March, and ask your hotel how guests reach its door on Easter Sunday.
Borgo: the old quarter by St Peter’s
Borgo is the old quarter between Castel Sant’Angelo and the Square, with Via della Conciliazione running through it and Borgo Pio beside it. Last year’s Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday Masses and the Urbi et Orbi blessing were all at the Square, or on the Basilica’s loggia above it, so Borgo is the shortest morning walk. The cost is that the crowds gather on your doorstep. We found no official security or road plan for 2027.
Where to stay in Borgo
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Residenza Paolo VI, comfortable. A four-star, by its own description, in the premises of the Augustinian General Curia, opened for Holy Year 2000, with 35 rooms and a terrace with a view of St Peter’s Basilica and the Apostolic Palace. Its site says the terrace stays open in winter behind sliding windows, and it lists two “San Pietro” Junior Suites with direct views of the dome. Choose it for a terrace on the Square. Watch out: the French Bed Room is 13 m² with a queen bed reached from one side only, and a Double Standard is 16 m². Check rates on Booking.com →
- Palazzo Cardinal Cesi, comfortable. A palace of the Cesi family, now owned by the Salvatorian general house, with its entrance at Via della Conciliazione 51 at the end of the street in front of the Square, 29 rooms and a cloister garden. Its room pages list sizes of 12, 16, 18 and 20 m². Choose it for the end of Via della Conciliazione. Watch out: its pages publish no minimum stay or Easter terms, so ask for both in writing; rooms start at 12 m². Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Bramante, good value. A family-run hotel in Borgo Pio, at Vicolo delle Palline 24, with 16 rooms of 18 m² to 30 m², a stated building history that goes back to 1550 and a breakfast it describes as made in-house. Choose it for a small family hotel a short step from the Square, by its own account. Watch out: its site still carries a Jubilee 2025 page and states no star rating, so confirm dates and rates by email. Check rates on Booking.com →
Prati: the Vatican and quieter nights
Prati is the 19th-century grid between the Vatican and the Tiber, with Ottaviano and Lepanto on metro line A. For Holy Week its advantage is the metro: line A runs from here to Spagna and Termini, so a late return from the Colosseum or the airport train does not depend on a long walk. Hotel dei Mellini counts about 15 minutes’ walk to St Peter’s.
Where to stay in Prati
- Hotel dei Mellini, comfortable. 80 rooms over six floors at Via Muzio Clementi 81, designed by the architect Harry Gregory, with a terrace and sun deck and a gym. By the hotel’s account the Spanish Steps are a 10-minute walk away and St Peter’s about 15. Choose it for space, with the Vatican and the centre both walkable. Watch out: the Petit Chambre is a 12 m² room with a single bed; the Superior rooms are 25 m². Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel dei Consoli, good value. 28 rooms at Via Varrone 2/D, 150 metres from Ottaviano and 750 metres from the Square, according to its own directions, with a top-floor terrace where breakfast is served with a view of the dome. Choose it for the metro on the corner and a roof for breakfast. Watch out: single rooms are 11 m² and classic rooms 13 m², and its directions page quotes the Leonardo Express at €15 and about 35 minutes, against Trenitalia’s €14 and 32.
Centro Storico: the first-trip base
Across the Tiber, the Centro Storico is the Rome of the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. It is the strongest base if Easter week is also a first trip, and it has no metro of its own. On Easter morning you will cross the river with everyone else, so allow time.
Where to stay in the Centro Storico
- Hotel Raphaël, splurge. A five-star Relais & Châteaux member since 2010, behind Piazza Navona, with a façade covered in wisteria and Virginia creeper, 50 rooms and 20 suites, works by Miró, lithographs by De Chirico and terracottas by Picasso, and suites that carry the name of the architect Richard Meier. Choose it for a five-star base behind Navona. Watch out: its restaurant, Mater Terrae, cooks organic, vegan and biodynamic food by the hotel’s account, and its site is in Italian. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Albergo del Senato, comfortable. A three-star hotel on Piazza della Rotonda, next to the Pantheon, with a rooftop terrace and buffet breakfast included in the rate. Its Penthouse Suites, Senior Suite and Junior Suite look at the Pantheon. Choose it for the Pantheon outside the window. Watch out: the Standard rooms are on the lower floors, and the hotel says a view of the Pantheon is not guaranteed from them. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Albergo Santa Chiara, good value. Behind the Pantheon, in a business that began as a wine shop in 1839 and now has 96 rooms in three adjoining buildings, with quadruple rooms for families. Choose it for the centre of the centre at a lower price. Watch out: breakfast comes only with rates that include it, and the hotel is in the limited traffic zone, with no parking. Check rates on Booking.com →
Monti: by the Colosseum
Monti climbs from the Imperial Forums towards Termini, in streets that feel residential. In the 2026 programme the Good Friday Way of the Cross was at the Colosseum at about 21:00, and Monti is the nearest of our five areas, by the hotels’ own accounts. We found no official plan for crowd access or road closures at the Colosseum in 2027.
Where to stay in Monti
- Hotel Forum, comfortable. A four-star superior of 78 rooms and suites in an 18th-century building at Via Tor de’ Conti 25, with a Roof Garden where breakfast is served and an American bar. Its page describes it as the only hotel in the Roman Forum and sells separate “Deluxe with view” and “Suite with View” categories. Choose it for breakfast on a roof above the Forums. Watch out: the view is a category you book, not the default. Check rates on Booking.com →
- The Fifteen Keys Hotel, comfortable. A four-star of 15 individually designed rooms in a five-storey townhouse converted in 2015, at Via Urbana 6-7, which the hotel describes as steps from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum; the rooms look over a courtyard or the rooftops. Choose it for a small hotel on a quiet street. Watch out: with 15 rooms there is little choice at a busy date, and its site lists room sizes that vary, so check yours before you book. Check rates on Booking.com →
Termini: the airport train and lower prices
Termini is where the Leonardo Express arrives and metro lines A and B meet, so it is the easiest base for a Vatican morning by metro and an early train the day after. The streets right by the station are busy and less charming than the centre.
Where to stay near Termini
- Palazzo Montemartini, splurge. A five-star Radisson Collection hotel beside the Servian Walls and within walking distance of the Baths of Diocletian, a few steps from Termini, with the Thalea spa and a fifth-floor terrace. Choose it for five-star comfort by the airport train. Watch out: the hotel’s terrace page describes a summer season from June to September, so do not count on it at Easter. Check rates on Booking.com →
- The RomeHello, budget. A hostel at Via Torino 45 in the Esquilino, which says its profits go to social and environmental initiatives, with dorm beds, private rooms, a social kitchen and a garden. Choose it for the lowest price in this guide. Watch out: dorm beds are shared, and the tax rule for hostels is unclear (see above), so ask what will be added. Check rates on Booking.com →
How to book Rome for Easter
- Book with free cancellation. The Vatican has not published the 2027 programme. If you plan around one ceremony, prepay once the times are out.
- Ask about minimum stays. None of the 12 hotels publishes an Easter rate or minimum stay on the pages we read. Ask in writing, especially in Borgo.
- Count the tax. It is per person and set by the star rating: €7.50 a night at a four-star, €6 at a three-star, nothing for under-10s and nothing after the tenth night.
- Check the room size. Among the hotels here, the smallest published rooms run from 11 m² at Hotel dei Consoli and 12 m² at the Mellini’s Petit Chambre and Palazzo Cardinal Cesi to 30 m² at Hotel Bramante.
- Plan the Good Friday evening. If last year’s pattern holds, the Basilica service is at 17:00 and the Colosseum at about 21:00, so decide which you want before you pick the area.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and hotel taxes around the world shows how other cities charge.

Frequently asked questions
When is Easter in Rome in 2027?
Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027, so Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday on 21 March. These dates are our arithmetic from the Easter date: as of 3 November 2026 the Vatican had not published its 2027 Holy Week programme. The 2026 programme, which is last year's pattern, put Palm Sunday Mass at 10:00 in St Peter's Square, the Good Friday Way of the Cross at the Colosseum in the evening, the Easter Vigil at 21:00 and Urbi et Orbi at 12:00 on Easter Sunday.
Where is the best place to stay in Rome for Easter and the Vatican?
Borgo, the old quarter along Via della Conciliazione, is the shortest walk to St Peter's Square, where last year's Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday Masses were held. Prati has Ottaviano on metro line A. The Centro Storico suits a first trip, Monti is nearest the Colosseum for the Good Friday Way of the Cross, and Termini is the base for the airport train and lower prices.
How do you get free tickets for the Pope's Holy Week and Easter ceremonies?
The Vatican says tickets for the General Audiences and the Holy Father's liturgical celebrations are always free of charge. Lay visitors request them through the Prefecture of the Papal Household's online portal, eventi.pontificalisdomus.va. We found no official statement of which Holy Week celebrations need a lay ticket and no published request deadline, so check the portal when the 2027 programme appears.
Are the Vatican Museums open during Easter week 2027?
The Vatican Museums' 2027 calendar marks every Sunday in March as a closure day, including Easter Sunday on 28 March, as well as Friday 19 March and Monday 29 March, which is Easter Monday by our arithmetic. It marks no closure on 25, 26 or 27 March. The museums are normally open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 20:00, with last entry at 18:00.
How much is the city tax in Rome?
Rome's contributo di soggiorno is charged per person per night: €10 at a five-star hotel, €7.50 at a four-star, €6 at a three-star, €5 at a two-star and €4 at a one-star, with €6 for a B&B. The table caps the charge at 10 nights in the same property, and children are exempt until their tenth birthday. As our arithmetic, a couple for 7 nights pays €105 at a four-star hotel. We found no official notice of a change for 2026 or 2027.
How do you get from Fiumicino and Ciampino airports to the centre of Rome?
The Leonardo Express runs non-stop from Fiumicino to Termini in about 32 minutes, every 15 minutes, for €14, according to Trenitalia. Four tickets bought together cost €40. From Ciampino, Ciampino Airlink combines a bus of about 10 minutes to Ciampino station with a train to Termini for €2.70. For St Peter's, metro line A has stops at Ottaviano and Cipro.
