Strasbourg’s Christmas market is open from Friday 27 November to Thursday 24 December 2026, and for those four weeks the old town changes: the city says motor traffic is prohibited on the Grande Île during market hours, with access controls at the bridges. The hotel bill changes too. Strasbourg charges a tourist tax per person per night by star rating, and in 2026 that is €2.86 in a four-star hotel and €1.87 in a three-star, on top of the room rate.
This guide covers five areas, 12 hotels, the confirmed 2026 dates and hours, the tourist tax and the journey in. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

The 2026 market: dates, hours and where it is
The city’s official Christmas site, Strasbourg Capitale de Noël, confirms the 2026 dates and hours. We could not read a 2026 day-by-day programme: its downloadable guidebook was still the 2025 edition, so this guide lists no 2026 events.
| What | 2026 |
|---|---|
| Market dates | Friday 27 November to Thursday 24 December |
| Opening day, 27 November | 2pm to 9pm |
| Every other day | 11am to 9pm |
| Closing day, 24 December | 11am to 6pm |
| After 24 December | All stalls close for good that evening; none open on 25 December |
The city lists eight markets in the historic centre:
- Place Broglie: the Chrìstkìndelsmärik.
- Place Kléber: the market at the foot of the Grand Sapin, the big tree.
- Cathedral Square and Castle Square: the market around the cathedral.
- Place du Temple Neuf: the Carré d’Or market.
- Rohan terrace and Fish Market Square: the gourmet market.
- Benjamin Zix and Saint Thomas squares: the Petite France market.
- Square Louise Weiss: small Alsatian producers; the Advent Village for children is here.
- Place Grimmeissen: the OFF market.
Crowds. The city says Mondays, Tuesdays and mornings are the quietest times, and that the markets are very crowded on Wednesday afternoons, Friday evenings and throughout the weekend. If you can choose, Monday and Tuesday are the days to be in town.
The Grande Île during the market. Motor traffic is prohibited there during market hours, and bicycles and personal mobility devices are not allowed on the market squares between 11am and 9pm. The market has no luggage lockers for security reasons; the city points to the self-service left-luggage at the SNCF station. The city’s getting-around page, which still carried 2025 dates when we read it, says suitcases and backpacks are systematically inspected when entering the Grande Île. Ask your hotel how it handles arrivals.
Strasbourg’s tourist tax in 2026
The tax is the taxe de séjour au réel: your hotel collects it and passes it on to the Eurométropole and to the Collectivité européenne d’Alsace, which takes the departmental share. It is charged per person per night, and the Eurométropole says it must appear on your invoice separately from the room. These are the 2026 rates from the Eurométropole’s own grid:
| Category | Eurométropole share | Departmental share | Total per person per night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palace | €4.90 | €0.49 | €5.39 |
| 5-star hotel | €3.60 | €0.36 | €3.96 |
| 4-star hotel | €2.60 | €0.26 | €2.86 |
| 3-star hotel | €1.70 | €0.17 | €1.87 |
| 2-star hotel | €1.00 | €0.10 | €1.10 |
| 1-star hotel, chambres d’hôtes, auberges collectives | €0.80 | €0.08 | €0.88 |
| Unclassified | 5% of the night’s price before VAT, per person, capped at €4.90 | plus 10%, capped at €0.49 | 5% plus 10%, capped at €5.39 |
The grid shows no further regional surcharge. Minors under 18 are exempt, as are seasonal workers employed in the Eurométropole and people in emergency housing.
Our arithmetic: two adults for three nights in a four-star hotel pay 2 × 3 × €2.86, or €17.16; in a three-star, 2 × 3 × €1.87, or €11.22. A child under 18 adds nothing. Rohan, Contades, Diana Dauphine and Beaucour below describe themselves as four-star, and Suisse and Vendôme as three-star.
Getting in, and around
- From Paris. SNCF Connect’s timetable for 29 October 2026 lists 21 journeys a day from Paris to Strasbourg, the quickest taking 1h45 and many direct trains 1h46. That is a sample day, not a December promise; search your own date.
- From Strasbourg-Entzheim airport. The airport says shuttle trains run up to five an hour and reach Strasbourg station in 8 minutes, over a covered footbridge from the terminal. A TER-only ticket is €3.20 one way; a ticket valid on tram, bus and TER for 24 hours is €4.60.
- From Basel-Mulhouse. EuroAirport has no rail link to Strasbourg. Its line 11 bus runs to Saint-Louis station in about 10 to 15 minutes, and the airport lists direct trains from Saint-Louis to Strasbourg every 30 minutes. SNCF Connect’s 29 October sample shows Basel to Strasbourg at 1h15 at the quickest.
- From Frankfurt. The same sample shows Frankfurt am Main to Strasbourg in 2h02 at the quickest; we did not check airport services.
- By car. The city sells park-and-ride at €4.20 a day, with a round-trip tram ticket for every passenger, and says the centre is entirely pedestrian during the festivities.
- Trams. The city says tram lines A, C, D and F stop near the market venues. The operator CTS sells a single ticket valid for an hour from €1.90 on its app or card (€2.50 on board buses) and a 24-hour solo ticket from €4.60.
The Grande Île: the markets at your door
The Grande Île is the island of the old town, and it holds most of the markets. Staying here means you can drop shopping at the hotel and be back in minutes. The cost is luggage on foot through pedestrian streets.
Where to stay on the Grande Île
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Hôtel Cathédrale, comfortable. At 12-13 place de la Cathédrale, opposite the cathedral and the Kammerzell house; 16 Cathedral View rooms look straight onto the square, and breakfast is served from 7am to 10am (10:30am at weekends). Choose it for waking up on the cathedral square. Watch out: there is no lift between reception and the first floor, a staircase of about twenty steps, though a lift serves the floors above. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hôtel Rohan, comfortable. A four-star boutique hotel at 17-19 rue du Maroquin, 50 m from the cathedral on pedestrian streets; its Comfort Double rooms are 15 to 25 m² including the bathroom, with air conditioning. Choose it for a central four-star on pedestrian streets. Watch out: the Comfort Single is only 10 to 13 m² including the bathroom. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hôtel Suisse, good value. A three-star hotel with 25 rooms at 2-4 rue de la Râpe, in a 14th-century house next to the Palais Rohan; most rooms have a cathedral view. Choose it for a historic three-star close to the cathedral. Watch out: there is no air conditioning, only a fan in each room, and the building cannot accommodate guests with reduced mobility. Check rates on Booking.com →
Petite France: canals and half-timbered houses
Petite France is the canal quarter on the west of the island and hosts two markets, at Benjamin Zix and Saint Thomas squares and at Square Louise Weiss, where the city’s Advent Village for families runs. The Mercure sits between the quarter and the station.
Where to stay in Petite France
- Hôtel & Spa Régent Petite France, splurge. At 5 rue des Moulins, with 75 rooms that all look onto Petite France, the Ill or the half-timbered houses, and and room pages that say one hour of spa per person per night is included, by reservation. Choose it for a splurge on the water. Watch out: check-in is from 4pm, and the spa hour must be booked. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Mercure Strasbourg Centre Petite France, comfortable. A three-star hotel at 3 rue du Maire Kuss, close to the TGV station and, by its own account, five minutes from Petite France; it serves a buffet breakfast with regional specialities. Choose it for a hotel between the station and the canals. Watch out: the room sizes it lists run from 12 to 19 m², so look at the room type. Check rates on Booking.com →
The station area: arrive by train, walk in
The first chalets are a 10-minute walk from Strasbourg Central Station, according to the city. A hotel here makes sense if you arrive by TGV or have an early train out. The trade-off is that you give up a hotel in the old streets.
Where to stay near the station
- Hôtel Vendôme, good value. A three-star hotel at 9 place de la Gare, 120 m from the TGV station, with soundproofed, air-conditioned rooms for one to four people and a bar-lounge open 24 hours. Choose it for the nearest bed to the train. Watch out: the room pages we read give no room sizes, so ask before booking for a family. Check rates on Booking.com →
- ibis budget Strasbourg Centre Gare, budget. At 13 place de la Gare, opposite the TGV station, with a buffet breakfast; its rooms are listed at 15 m². Choose it for a budget bed within sight of the platforms. Watch out: the rooms are small, listed at 15 m². Check rates on Booking.com →
- Best Western Plus Monopole Métropole, comfortable. At 16 rue Kuhn, which Best Western describes as centrally placed near the TGV station and the historic quarters, with rooms in a traditional Alsatian or a contemporary style. Choose it for a mid-range chain hotel near the station. Watch out: the Best Western page we read gives no room sizes. Check rates on Booking.com →
The Neustadt: outside the old town
The Neustadt is the district built beside the old town, and the Accor site describes it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is outside the Grande Île, so market evenings end with a tram ride or a walk back. We group Hôtel Régent Contades, on Avenue de la Liberté, with it.
Where to stay in the Neustadt
- Hôtel Régent Contades, splurge. A four-star hotel at 8 avenue de la Liberté with 48 rooms and suites, three of them accessible, and a wellness area with a sanarium and massages. Choose it for a four-star with a wellness area. Watch out: parking is paid, bookable and subject to availability. Check rates on Booking.com →
- ibis budget Strasbourg Centre République, budget. At 23A rue Oberlin, with rooms of 13 to 18 m², a breakfast area opening on a private garden and check-in from 12pm. Choose it for a budget bed in the Neustadt. Watch out: it is outside the old town, and the smallest rooms are 13 m². Check rates on Booking.com →
The Krutenau: across the river
The Krutenau lies east of the Grande Île. Diana Dauphine calls it a lively neighbourhood a short step from the old town, and the tram stop Porte de l’Hôpital, on lines A and D, is 250 m from that hotel.
Where to stay in the Krutenau
- Hôtel Diana Dauphine, comfortable. A four-star hotel at 30 rue de la 1ère Armée with 46 rooms; Standard rooms are 16 to 18 m². The hotel says the cathedral and Petite France are 10 minutes on foot and the Christmas market is 10 minutes away. Choose it for a four-star in a local neighbourhood. Watch out: breakfast is €20 per person per day and underground parking is €30 a night. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hôtel Beaucour, comfortable. A four-star hotel at 5 rue des Bouchers, across from the Austerlitz car park, with 49 individually decorated rooms, balneotherapy tubs in 31 of them, a lift and air conditioning. The hotel says it is four tram stops from the station, under 7 minutes, with trams A and D stopping at Porte de l’Hôpital. Choose it for a courtyard hotel with a bath. Watch out: the Austerlitz car park across the street is €22 for 24 hours with a 1.90 m height limit. Check rates on Booking.com →
How to book Strasbourg at Christmas
- Book early and read the terms. We did not check live availability or prices, so we quote none. Compare cancellation terms; Diana Dauphine’s flexible rate is free to cancel until 3pm the day before arrival.
- Count the tax. It is €2.86 a night per adult in a four-star and €1.87 in a three-star; check whether a quote includes it.
- Choose the base by how you move. On the Grande Île you walk everywhere; elsewhere you will use trams.
- Pick the quiet days. The city says Monday and Tuesday are the quietest, so a Sunday-night arrival puts you in town for both.
- Check room size. Several hotels list rooms of 10 to 15 m², so pick a larger type if you have luggage.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and direct booking versus online agencies covers when to go direct; Hôtel & Spa Régent Petite France and Hôtel Régent Contades each advertise 10% off on their own sites.
