Tromsø in the aurora season is dark by design. Visit Tromsø puts the polar night at roughly 27 November to 15 January, with only a few hours of twilight a day, and it says the northern lights may be visible from late August to early April, but only when the sky is clear and dark. The hotel bill has its own twist: accommodation carries 12% VAT, and Tromsø’s council voted on 24 June 2026 to add a 3% visitor fee from 1 January 2027, a plan that still needs government approval.

This guide covers four areas, 12 hotels (two of them out of town, reached by road), the season’s dates, the VAT and the planned fee, and the airport bus, city buses and taxis. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here. No hotel can promise a sighting, and neither can we.

The season: what the official sources say

Aurora months. Visit Tromsø says the northern lights may be visible from late August to early April, and that clear skies and darkness are essential. It adds that Tromsø lies within the auroral zone. That is a description of conditions, not a forecast: cloud can hide the lights even when they are active, and no hotel or tour can promise a sighting.

Polar night. Visit Tromsø gives the polar night as lasting approximately from 27 November to 15 January. From mid-January the light gradually returns, and because the surrounding mountains block the low sun, it is usually not visible from central Tromsø until later in January.

What that means for where you sleep. Darkness is the condition a hotel can influence least. A room in the town sits among streetlights and ships’ lights; Malangen Resort says its wilderness camp, a short walk from the resort, has minimal light pollution, which is the resort’s own claim. In town, a window facing the water or a rooftop bar is a convenience, not a guarantee. Most visitors in the season also take an evening tour or drive out; check each hotel’s pick-up arrangements with the hotel.

Norway’s VAT and the planned visitor fee

VAT. The Norwegian Tax Administration’s rates page lists letting of rooms, with accommodation in the footnote, at 12%, against a normal rate of 25%.

The 3% visitor fee (besøksbidrag). The Storting’s law on visitor contributions, passed on 5 June 2025, lets a municipality charge an overnight fee calculated as a 3% surcharge on the payment for the stay, excluding VAT. It applies to stays of under 30 consecutive days, covers the whole municipality, and must be shown separately in the sales documents. The duty to pay arises when the stay begins, and the municipality may set which months of the year the fee applies.

Tromsø’s status, as of 28 October 2026:

Step Date Source
Municipal council (kommunestyret) decides to introduce the overnight fee 24 June 2026 City of Tromsø
Planned start of the fee 1 January 2027 City of Tromsø
Draft local regulation on public consultation Responses due 30 October 2026 City of Tromsø
Ministry approval of Tromsø’s plan Required before the fee can take effect; we found no published approval Storting law, § 2-2

The city says the consultation does not cover the rate, which is set in the law at 3%. So treat 1 January 2027 as planned, not final. A stay that begins before that date falls before the planned start; one beginning in January 2027 or later falls after it, if the plan is approved and the final regulation sets no different months.

Our arithmetic, for a quoted rate that includes VAT: five nights at NOK 2,400 a night is NOK 12,000. Without 12% VAT that is about NOK 10,714, and 3% of that is about NOK 321, which would bring the bill to about NOK 12,321 if the fee is added on top. Check whether a quote includes VAT and the fee, and compare final totals.

Getting in from the airport, and around

Sentrum: shops, restaurants and a short walk

Sentrum is the practical base for a short stay. Four hotels sit in the streets around Storgata, Grønnegata and Vestregata, and the Airport Express stops on Storgata. The trade-off is light: you are in the middle of the town’s glow.

How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.

The harbour: the quay and the Hurtigruten

The harbour streets (Fredrik Langes gate, Kaigata, Skansegata and Sjøgata) put you beside the water, with ships at the quay and mountains across the strait. Two of the hotels below are Airport Express stops.

Tromsøya’s quieter ends: a spa, and the airport side

Away from the harbour, the island has two options that suit different trips: a spa hotel in a quiet street, and a modern hotel at the airport.

Out of town: Tromsdalen and Malangen

The two out-of-town options below are reached by road. One is five minutes from the centre by car, the other is more than an hour away.

Frequently asked questions

When is the northern lights season in Tromsø?

Visit Tromsø says the northern lights may be visible from late August to early April, but that clear skies and darkness are essential. That describes conditions, not a forecast: no hotel or tour can promise a sighting.

When is the polar night in Tromsø?

Visit Tromsø gives the polar night as lasting approximately from 27 November to 15 January, with only a few hours of twilight a day. The light gradually returns from mid-January, and the sun is usually not visible from central Tromsø until later in January because of the surrounding mountains.

What is the best area to stay in Tromsø for the northern lights?

Sentrum is the practical base for shops, restaurants and the Airport Express stop on Storgata, and the harbour puts you by the Hurtigruten quay. For more distance from the town's lights, Malangen Resort is a 70-minute drive south of Tromsø and says its wilderness camp has minimal light pollution, though that is the resort's own claim, not a promise of a sighting.

Does Tromsø charge a tourist tax on hotel stays?

Not yet, but one is planned. Tromsø's council decided on 24 June 2026 to introduce an overnight fee from 1 January 2027, set in the national law at 3% of the payment for the stay excluding VAT. The ministry must approve the city's plan first, we found no published approval as of 28 October 2026, and the draft local regulation was on consultation until 30 October 2026, so the start date is planned, not final.

What VAT applies to hotels in Norway?

The Norwegian Tax Administration's rates page lists letting of rooms, with accommodation in the footnote, at the 12% low rate, against a normal rate of 25%. Check whether a quoted rate includes VAT and compare final totals.

How do I get from Tromsø Airport to the city centre?

The Airport Express (Flybussen), run by Bussring, stops at several hotels; its price list shows NOK 125 one way and NOK 200 return for an adult, dated from 1 November 2024, so confirm the fare. City bus routes 24, 26, 40 and 42 also stop at the airport, with tickets in the Svipper app. Avinor says taxis leave from the rank outside the arrivals hall, the ride takes about 10 minutes, and drivers must give the price in advance.
