Washington’s cherry trees have reached peak bloom, by the National Park Service’s count, anywhere from 17 March to 10 April in the 23 years it publishes since 2004, and in 2026 the date was 26 March. Nobody can forecast the 2027 date from here, so the useful question is not which night to book but where to sleep so that an early or a late year still works. The Tidal Basin is on the National Mall, the rest of the city is a Metro ride away, and the Park Service itself tells visitors to come by public transport.
This guide covers the dates to aim for, five areas weighed by their route to the Tidal Basin, 12 hotels to start with, the hotel tax on both sides of the Potomac and the airport links. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

When to go: the dates to aim for
The Park Service defines peak bloom as the day when 70% of the Yoshino cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin are open. Its most likely window is the last week of March to the first week of April, and extreme weather has produced peak bloom as early as 15 March (1990) and as late as 18 April (1958). Here are the last five years from its Bloom Watch table, which is last year’s evidence, not a forecast:
| Year | Puffy white | Peak bloom |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 22 March | 26 March |
| 2025 | 23 March | 28 March |
| 2024 | 15 March | 17 March |
| 2023 | 18 March | 23 March |
| 2022 | 19 March | 21 March |
Across the 23 years in the table, 2004 to 2026, our arithmetic gives a median peak-bloom date of 29 March, with the earliest 17 March (2024) and the latest 10 April (2014 and 2015). The Park Service says the trees bloom for a period of several days, that a rainy, windy day can end the display abruptly and that a late frost can prevent blooming; in 2017 a frost on 14 to 16 March cost about half the blossoms. It also says peak bloom is almost impossible to forecast more than ten days ahead, so no 2027 date exists yet.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival has announced its 2027 dates: 20 March to 11 April. Its events calendar lists the opening ceremony on 20 March, the Blossom Kite Festival on 27 March, Petalpalooza at Navy Yard on 3 April, and the Sakura Matsuri street festival and the parade on 10 April. In 22 of the 23 years in the Park Service table, peak bloom fell between 20 March and 10 April, inside the festival window; the exception was 2024. Aim for the last week of March and the first week of April, and stay four or five nights rather than two.
The National Mall and the Southwest Waterfront: the shortest walk
The Park Service puts the Smithsonian station, on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines, about a mile from the Tidal Basin Welcome Area near the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and says the basin’s walkway is 1.8 miles around. To avoid the crowds at the Smithsonian station it suggests walking in from Foggy Bottom, Federal Triangle or L’Enfant Plaza, which adds the Yellow and Green lines. The Southwest Waterfront, with the Wharf’s restaurants and promenade, is served by L’Enfant Plaza, which citizenM says is right by its door. Book early: this is the part of town the blossom crowds head for.

Downtown and Penn Quarter: museums, the White House and the Metro
Downtown, Penn Quarter and Chinatown are the compact core of the city, close to the White House, Capital One Arena and the museums. Federal Triangle, which the Park Service names as a walking starting point, is on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines, and Metro Center, in the middle of downtown, adds the Red Line. This is the best base if the trip is more than the blossom: you can walk to the Mall in the morning and to dinner at night. The Smithsonian’s museums charge no admission, although three locations need a free pass or ticket.

- Willard InterContinental Washington, splurge. At 1401 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, a landmark hotel whose 335 guest rooms and 69 suites have all been restored. Choose it for a historic address in the middle of downtown. Watch out: price. Check rates on Booking.com →

Foggy Bottom and the West End: walking in from the west
Foggy Bottom, around George Washington University, has its own Metro station on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines, and the Park Service names it as a place to start walking to the cherry trees. The West End, north of it, is where the Fairmont stands, near Georgetown’s waterfront. It suits visitors who would rather arrive at the Tidal Basin on foot than by train, and who want a calmer evening than the Mall.
Where to stay in Foggy Bottom and the West End
- Hotel Hive, budget. At 2224 F Street NW in Foggy Bottom, in a historic building, and billed as DC’s first micro-hotel, with rooms of 125 to 250+ square feet and a rooftop with views of the city. Capitol Hill and Navy Yard: the Capitol and a quieter evening
Capitol Hill is row-house streets around the Capitol and the Supreme Court. Capitol South station, on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines, puts you on the same lines as the Smithsonian station. Navy Yard, to the south-east, is the riverfront by the ballpark, and the festival’s Petalpalooza at Navy Yard is listed on 3 April 2027. This pair suits travellers who plan to spend their days at the Capitol and on the Mall, with the Tidal Basin as one trip by train.
Where to stay on Capitol Hill and at Navy Yard
- Capitol Hill Hotel, comfortable. At 200 C Street SE, nestled in 19th-century row houses, steps from the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court. Choose it to be on Capitol Hill itself. Watch out: the hotel’s page names no Metro station; check the walk to Capitol South. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Cambria Hotel Washington D.C. Navy Yard Riverfront, good value. At 69 Q Street SW, with 154 accommodations. Choose it for a modern hotel at a lower price at Navy Yard. Watch out: valet parking is $58 a night, and the page names no Metro station; check the route to the Smithsonian or L’Enfant Plaza. Check rates on Booking.com →
Arlington: Rosslyn and Crystal City
Arlington is in Virginia, across the Potomac, and the reason to consider it is price, which you should compare for your own dates. Rosslyn station is on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines, the same three as the Smithsonian station, so the ride needs no change. Crystal City station is on the Blue and Yellow lines, and Reagan National Airport’s station is on the same two. The trade-off is that you finish your day by train, not on foot, and the Park Service recommends public transport for the blossom anyway.
Where to stay in Arlington
- Le Méridien Arlington, comfortable. At 1121 19th Street North in Rosslyn, just steps from the Rosslyn Metro station, according to the hotel, with the Noble Fox Bar & Terrace and views of the Potomac. - Homewood Suites by Hilton Arlington Rosslyn Key Bridge, comfortable. At 1900 North Quinn Street, one mile from Georgetown across the Francis Scott Key Bridge, with studio suites that sleep four, a full kitchen, free hot breakfast and a complimentary shuttle to the Rosslyn Metro station. - Courtyard by Marriott Arlington Crystal City/Reagan National Airport, good value. At 2899 Richmond Highway, with a free shuttle to and from Reagan National every 30 minutes, from 5 a.m. to midnight. Choose it for an early or late flight. Watch out: parking is $49 a night, and the hotel’s page names no Metro station, so check the walk to Crystal City. Check rates on Booking.com →
What the hotel tax adds, in the District and in Arlington
The District’s Office of Tax and Revenue lists one rate for rooms, lodgings and accommodations, and its Notice of Oct. 1, 2025, Tax Changes extends the temporary 15.95% rate through 30 September 2027, which covers a spring 2027 stay:
| Place | Charge | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Washington, DC | Sales and use tax on hotel rooms and other transient lodging | 15.95% of the room charge |
| Arlington County, Virginia | Transient occupancy tax: 5% county, 0.25% tourism, 3% state regional | 8.25% of the room charge |
On a $300 room in the District, 15.95% is $47.85, so the room costs $347.85 a night; in Arlington, 8.25% is $24.75, so the same rate costs $324.75 before any other charge. Both figures are our arithmetic, not the cities’. The Arlington page lists only the occupancy tax, so ask the hotel whether anything else is added, and a hotel can add its own fees, so compare the total. The county’s page gives no effective date for its rate, so confirm it with the hotel.
Getting in from the airports, and around
- From Reagan National (DCA), Metro’s Yellow and Blue lines serve the airport’s station, which Terminal 2 reaches by two enclosed bridges on the concourse level; from Terminal 1, take an airport shuttle bus to the bridges. Weekday daytime fares run from $2.25 to $6.75 depending on distance.
- From Dulles (IAD), the Silver Line station is about 600 feet from the terminal. The airport states a fare to Metro Center of $6.75 and a ride of roughly 50 to 55 minutes to Rosslyn.
- In town, Metrorail fares are $2.25 to $6.75 on weekdays between 5 am and 9:30 pm, and $2.25 to $2.50 after 9:30 pm and at weekends; buses are $2.25. Tap the same SmarTrip or contactless card at both ends of a rail trip.
- To the blossom, the Park Service says parking is extremely limited and warns of severe traffic congestion and road closures. It recommends public transport, with the Smithsonian station as the nearest stop.
How to book for a season that moves
- Book a refundable rate now for the nights you want, and check each rate’s cancellation deadline; the bloom date will not be known until days before.
- Stay four or five nights across the last week of March and the first week of April, not two, so that an early or a late year still overlaps with your trip.
- Count the tax. Add 15.95% to a District room rate and 8.25% to an Arlington one, plus any fee the hotel adds.
- Check the Metro. Several hotels here do not name a station on their own pages, so look at the walk to the nearest one before you pay for the location.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and our general guide to where to stay in Washington, DC has more hotels in Georgetown and Dupont Circle.
