The Shirakawa-go winter light-up is not an event you can turn up to. The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association says the 2027 edition runs on four dates only, 11, 17, 24 and 31 January, from 17:30 to 19:30, that it is by advance reservation only, and that visitors without a reservation will be refused entry even if they arrive on the day. So where you sleep decides how you get in: a night in the village, a reserved parking space, a taxi, or a bus tour from Takayama, Kanazawa or Toyama. The hotel bill adds two small local taxes, in Takayama and Kanazawa, both charged per person per night.
This guide covers the village and three bases (Takayama, Kanazawa and Toyama), 12 places to stay, the 2027 rules and deadlines, the Nohi Bus fares and the two city taxes. The stays are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in November 2026. No hotel pays to appear here, and none can get you a light-up ticket that the Association does not issue.
The short answer
| If you want… | Stay in | Why |

| a city with museums, a garden and a bus to the village | Kanazawa | Our Kanazawa guide covers the city; buses to the village take about 1.5 hours |
| a station hotel and a bus from the other side of the mountains | Toyama | Toyama Excel Hotel Tokyu is a 3-minute walk from the station |
| the cheapest bed near the village | Hatotani and Takayama | A guesthouse from ¥2,800 a night without meals, and a machiya-style inn near Takayama Station |
The 2027 light-up: what the Tourist Association says
Dates and hours. The 41st Shirakawa-go Light-Up takes place in the Ogimachi district on Monday 11 January (a public holiday), and on Sundays 17, 24 and 31 January 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30. The Association says it may be cancelled if a severe cold wave disrupts transport.
Tickets. Admission is by advance reservation and an admission ticket worn on a neck holder, and nothing is sold on the day. A ticket lets you walk around the lit village but does not include the observation deck. The Association says the observation deck ticket cannot be bought separately, and gives two routes: a stay in a village accommodation on the event day under a plan that includes one, or a light-up tour that includes one from a participating bus operator. Visitors who hold neither are refused access to the deck, and the deck is divided into three viewing sessions that you cannot choose.
Five ways in. The Association lists them. A stay in the village (with a deck ticket) comes first. Next, a reserved parking space for your own car, then a reserved space for a taxi (neither with a deck ticket). The last two are a bus tour from a highway-bus operator (Nohi Bus, Kaetsuno Bus, Toyama Chiho Railway Bus, Hokutetsu Bus or Iruka Kotsu), and a bus tour from a travel agency.
Rules that shape your night. An entrance gate goes up from 15:30 and visitors without a ticket are turned away. Visitors arriving by regular bus in the daytime must be on a bus that reaches the village by 15:20. The last regular buses out leave between about 16:00 and 17:00, before the event begins, and there are no regular buses back afterwards. Drones are banned, vehicles need studless winter tyres, and temperatures can run from about -10 to 0 degrees Celsius, so the Association advises insulated waterproof boots, anti-slip footwear and a torch. Hakusan Taxi does not run on event days.
Deadlines and prices, as of 3 November 2026
| What | Date | Detail from the Association or the bus operator |
|---|---|---|
| Village accommodation lottery | Applications closed 31 October 2026 | Winners are emailed on 10 November; if a winner declines, further applications open later |
| Parking for your own car, round 1 | Sold out | The first round, on sale from 10 September 2026, is sold out |
| Parking, round 2 | 1 December 2026, 13:00 | ¥7,000 for 1 to 5 people, ¥10,000 for 6 to 10 (round 1 was ¥6,000 and ¥9,000); online only, by credit card; refunds only if the committee cancels the event |
| Nohi Bus tours from Takayama | 11 Jan on sale 13 Oct, 17 Jan on 19 Oct, 24 Jan on 26 Oct, 31 Jan on 2 Nov | Course A ¥13,000 (no deck ticket), course B ¥16,000 (with deck ticket); online only, six people a booking |
| Tours with a travel agency | Details posted from 2 December 2026 | Reservations go through the agency |
The parking space is in the Midashima lot, which opens to ticket holders from 15:00 and must be left by 20:00, and the Association says a parking reservation does not include the observation deck. Nohi Bus says its tour leaves the Takayama Nohi Bus Center at 15:40 or 15:10 and returns at 20:20 or 20:45, depending on the course. These are the Association’s and the operator’s published figures; check whether your date is already sold.
Staying in the village: gassho minshuku, hot springs and a lottery
The Association’s own lodging list has 41 entries across Ogimachi, the main village, and outlying districts such as Hirase and Iijima. Gassho-zukuri farmhouse stays are small, and several take only a few rooms or groups a night. For the light-up itself, the Association says its accommodation reservations are allocated by lottery, not first-come, first-served. One village ryokan, Shiroyamakan, says on its own site that the four event dates cannot be booked through it. Rooms on the other nights are a different matter, so a stay the night before or after is the realistic option if the lottery fails.
Where to stay in the village
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Shiroyamakan, splurge. At Ogimachi 1168-1, under a minute’s walk from the Shirakawago Bus Terminal, in a building the Association says dates from 1884 and is a nationally important traditional structure. It takes four groups a day, and its room page says the Kiso hinoki-cypress baths are for private use. Choose it for a ryokan stay at the village’s gate. Watch out: its site says the four light-up dates are not bookable through it, and it takes reservations by phone (05769-6-1007) or its own booking page. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hakusanso, comfortable. A gassho-zukuri inn at Hirase 87 that calls itself the only gassho-style hot-spring inn in the Hirase Onsen area, with spring water flowing without recirculation and local mountain cooking. The Association lists four rooms. Choose it for a hot-spring night in a thatched house. Watch out: the Association puts it 20 minutes’ drive from the village, about 6 minutes’ walk from the Hirase bus stop, so it is not a walk to the light-up.
- Shimizu, good value. A 200-year-old gassho-style farmhouse minshuku at Ogimachi 2613, in a quiet part of the village, with a half-board plan from ¥19,800 that covers dinner and breakfast. Choose it for a plain, old village house. Watch out: it says its facilities differ from a modern hotel, and it sends reservations through the Tourist Association’s website.
- Onyado Yuinosho, comfortable. A 66-room hot-spring hotel at Iijima 908-2 with a hiba-beef kaiseki dinner served in two seatings, 17:30 and 20:00, and parking for 60 cars, according to the Association’s listing. Pick-up is available, and it is a minute on foot from the Iijima bus stop. Choose it for a hotel bath and meals without a farmhouse’s quirks. Watch out: the Association puts it 24 minutes’ walk from the bus terminal. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Shirakawago GuestHouse Kei, budget. A four-room guesthouse at Hatotani 329-1, priced from ¥2,800 with no meals, tax included and heating extra, by the Association’s listing, with a shared lounge and kitchen and English spoken. It is 15 minutes’ walk from the bus terminal and 4 minutes from the Hatogaya stop. Choose it for the lowest-cost bed near the village. Watch out: check-in is from 15:00 to 21:00, and the heating fee is on top. Check rates on Booking.com →
Takayama: the easiest bus base
Takayama is a 50-minute bus ride from Shirakawa-go on the Nohi Bus, with around 16 round-trip services a day, some by reservation. Nohi warns that delays of two hours or more can happen with snow, traffic for the village parking, or expressway closures, so allow slack.
Where to stay in Takayama
- Hida Hotel Plaza, comfortable. A 5-minute walk from JR Takayama Station, with 222 rooms across three wings, a mix of Japanese, Western and Japanese-Western rooms, in-house hot spring baths and several restaurants. The hotel gives Shirakawa-go as 50 minutes by bus from the station. Choose it for a hot-spring hotel near the bus. Watch out: it is large, so check which wing and room type you are booking. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Ryokan Asunaro, comfortable. A ryokan built from a country house moved to Takayama in 1991, put together without nails, with five room types; a tatami room is about 33 square metres with its own bathroom. Choose it for a timber house and a quiet night. Watch out: room types differ in size, and it lists a standard room with shower, so check what is included. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Rickshaw Inn, good value. A machiya-style inn 8 minutes’ walk from JR Takayama Station, with five named rooms, and a tourist-tax notice on its room page. Choose it for a modest, central night. Watch out: it is a small townhouse-style inn, so ask about shared bathrooms and heating before you book. Check rates on Booking.com →
Kanazawa: the city base
Kanazawa sits on the other side of the mountains. Visit it for Kenrokuen garden and the old districts; our where to stay in Kanazawa guide covers the neighbourhoods in depth. The Tourist Association gives the bus from Kanazawa Station to Shirakawa-go at about 1.5 hours.
Where to stay in Kanazawa
- Hotel Nikko Kanazawa, splurge. A 30-storey tower three minutes on foot from the station’s east exit, with guest rooms from the 17th floor up. Choose it for a high room and the shortest walk from the train. Watch out: its site lists planned two-hour power outages in the guest rooms, including 15 January 2027 from 14:30 to 16:30, so check your dates. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Kanazawa, comfortable. About a one-minute walk from the station, with 163 rooms on floors 6 to 15, from 22 square metres to a 70 square metre suite. Choose it for a quiet room beside the station. Watch out: entry rooms are 22 square metres, so ask for a twin if you are sharing. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Murataya Ryokan, budget. A Japanese-style inn at Katamachi 1-5-2 with 11 tatami rooms, none with a private bath, a public bath and coin laundry, 3 minutes’ walk from the Katamachi bus stop. Choose it for a plain, cheap night in a Japanese room. Watch out: it takes bookings by phone, fax or email on its own site. Check rates on Booking.com →
Toyama: a station hotel
Toyama is the third base the Nohi Bus line serves. A bus runs from Toyama Station to Shirakawa-go; the Association gives about 1.5 hours.
Where to stay in Toyama
- Toyama Excel Hotel Tokyu, comfortable. A 3-minute walk from Toyama Station, with Tateyama mountain views from the top-floor restaurant and some rooms on clear days, and 20 minutes by car from Toyama Airport, by the hotel’s own account. Choose it for a station-side bed before an early bus. Watch out: the hotel’s site warns about fake booking websites, so book through the hotel or a known site. Check rates on Booking.com →
Accommodation taxes: Takayama and Kanazawa
Both cities charge per person per night, on the room-only price.
| City | Rate per person per night | Since | Exemptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Takayama | ¥100 under ¥10,000; ¥200 from ¥10,000 to under ¥30,000; ¥300 from ¥30,000 | 1 October 2025 | Children up to the first 31 March after their 12th birthday, school-trip pupils and their staff |
| Kanazawa | ¥200 from ¥5,000 to under ¥20,000; ¥500 from ¥20,000 | April 2019 | Stays under ¥5,000 a person since 1 October 2024 |
Takayama. The city’s page puts the start at 1 October 2025, and says the charge excludes meals and consumption tax. How it is paid depends on the property: with the room charge at pre-payment, or on site.
Kanazawa. The city’s page shows the exemption for stays under ¥5,000 a person since 1 October 2024, and the city’s ordinance showed no later change when we checked on 28 October 2026.
We did not find an accommodation tax page for Shirakawa Village or for Toyama City, so ask the property what its total includes. Meals and consumption tax are outside the Takayama and Kanazawa bases.
Our arithmetic: two adults in Takayama at ¥12,000 a person a night for two nights pay 2 × 2 × ¥200 = ¥800. In Kanazawa at ¥12,000 a person a night they pay 2 × 2 × ¥200 = ¥800 as well, and at ¥25,000 they would pay 2 × 2 × ¥500 = ¥2,000.
Getting there: bus fares and times
Nohi Bus publishes the one-way fares; the times are Nohi’s for Takayama and the Association’s for the others. These are the regular buses, not the light-up tours, and the Association says there are none back after the event.
| From | To Shirakawago | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Takayama Bus Terminal | ¥2,800 | About 50 minutes |
| Kanazawa Station | ¥2,800 | About 1.5 hours |
| Toyama Station | ¥2,400 | About 1.5 hours |
Children under 6 travel free, and a seated child pays a child fare. Some departures are reserved; Nohi sells reserved-seat departures through Japan Bus Online. A mobile ticket exists for the non-reserved buses.
How to book the light-up
- Decide the route first. A village stay, a car-park slot and a tour each have their own deadline.
- Lottery stays. Winners are notified on 10 November 2026. If you lose, look for a stay the night before or after, and for a tour or parking slot.
- Parking. Round 2 opens on 1 December at 13:00; round 1 sold out, so expect it to sell fast.
- Tours. Nohi Bus’s tours cost ¥13,000 or ¥16,000 and sell by date; Kaetsuno Bus, Toyama Chiho Railway Bus, Hokutetsu Bus and Iruka Kotsu run their own from the other bases, with Hokutetsu taking phone reservations only, at the time of the Association’s notice.
- Pack for -10 to 0 degrees. Boots, grips and a torch.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and Japan’s tourist taxes lists the others.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Shirakawa-go light-up in 2027?
The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association gives four dates for the 41st light-up: Monday 11 January (a public holiday) and Sundays 17, 24 and 31 January 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30 in the Ogimachi district. It may be cancelled if a severe cold wave disrupts transport.
Can I just turn up to the Shirakawa-go light-up?
No. The Association says the event is by advance reservation only, with an admission ticket on a neck holder, and that visitors without a reservation are refused entry even if they arrive on the day. Tickets are not sold on the day, and an entrance gate goes up from 15:30.
How do I get a ticket for the observation deck?
The Association says the observation deck ticket is not sold separately. You get one by staying in a village accommodation on the event day under a plan that includes it, or by joining a light-up tour that includes one from a participating bus operator. Village stays handled by the Association were allocated by lottery, which closed on 31 October 2026, with winners notified on 10 November.
How much does parking for the light-up cost, and can I still book it?
Round 1 of the designated Midashima parking lot sold out. Round 2 opens at 13:00 on 1 December 2026 at ¥7,000 for 1 to 5 people and ¥10,000 for 6 to 10, online by credit card only. A parking reservation does not include the observation deck.
Can I get back to Takayama, Kanazawa or Toyama after the light-up?
Not on the regular bus. The Association says the last regular buses leave between about 16:00 and 17:00 and none run back after the event. Nohi Bus runs reservation-only light-up tours from Takayama at ¥13,000 (no deck ticket) or ¥16,000 (with a deck ticket), and other operators run tours from Kanazawa and Toyama.
Do Takayama and Kanazawa charge an accommodation tax?
Yes, per person per night. Takayama has charged ¥100 for a room-only price under ¥10,000, ¥200 from ¥10,000 to under ¥30,000 and ¥300 from ¥30,000 since 1 October 2025. Kanazawa charges ¥200 from ¥5,000 to under ¥20,000 and ¥500 from ¥20,000, with stays under ¥5,000 exempt since 1 October 2024. We found no tax page for Shirakawa Village or Toyama City.
