- Frequently asked questions
Cologne’s Christmas markets are spread across the city rather than packed into one square, and the first thing to know about the hotel bill is the levy. Cologne charges a Kulturförderabgabe, an overnight tax of 5% of what you pay for the room including VAT, and it applies to private and business guests alike. Hotels print it as an extra on top of the room price, as ibis Köln am Dom does on its own page, so add it to your budget before you compare hotels.
This guide covers five areas, 12 hotels, the 2026 dates and hours of each market we could confirm, the levy and the journey in. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

The 2026 markets: dates, hours and what is on
Cologne has several Christmas markets run by different organisers, each with its own dates. The table gives what each publishes on its own site for 2026.
| Market | 2026 dates | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Cathedral market, “Markt der Herzen”, Roncalliplatz | Monday 16 November to Tuesday 23 December; closed Sunday 22 November | Sunday to Wednesday 11am to 9pm; Thursday and Friday 11am to 10pm; Saturday 10am to 10pm |
| Markt der Engel, Neumarkt | 16 November to 23 December; closed 22 November | Sunday to Thursday 11am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to 10pm; mulled-wine stands an hour later; closes 9pm on Wednesday 23 December |
| Heinzels Wintermärchen, Heumarkt | Monday 23 November to 10 January 2027; closed 24 and 25 December | Daily 11am to 10pm until 30 December, then 11am to 9pm from 31 December |
| Heinzels Wintermärchen, Alter Markt | 23 November to 23 December | Daily 11am to 10pm |
| Harbour market, Chocolate Museum | 13 November to 3 January 2027; closed 24 and 25 December | Monday to Friday 11am to 9pm; Saturday and Sunday 11am to 10pm; Sunday 15 November from 1pm and Sunday 22 November from 6pm |
Three notes on the table:
- The Cathedral market says it has over 120 stalls and a free stage programme of more than 100 events; its 2026 market plan was still to be published when we read the page.
- Heinzels Wintermärchen calls itself Cologne’s biggest Christmas market, with more than 100 stalls and an open-air ice rink. Its Zeiten & Anfahrt page still links a market plan labelled 2025, so treat a plan you download as last year’s.
- The Harbour market gives its hours differently on two official pages: the market’s own site says weekdays to 9pm and weekends to 10pm, while the Chocolate Museum’s page says daily to 9pm and Friday and Saturday to 10pm. We use the market’s own site, which also describes a 48-metre Ferris wheel and about 70 wooden huts replacing the old pagoda tents.
Unconfirmed: the Stadtgarten market. We found no 2026 market page on the Stadtgarten’s own site. The city portal koeln.de lists it at Venloer Straße 40 from 13 November to 23 December 2026, Monday to Friday 4pm to 9:30pm and Saturday and Sunday noon to 9:30pm, but that is not one of the sources we treat as official, so check before you plan around it. The cologne-tourism.com Christmas page gives no per-market dates.
Christmas week. On our reading of the dates, the Cathedral market and the Markt der Engel end on 23 December, and the Heumarkt and Harbour markets are shut on 24 and 25 December. We found no official crowd guidance for any market.
The 5% levy: what Cologne adds to the room price
The city of Cologne calls it the Kulturförderabgabe (Übernachtungssteuer). It is a local tax on paid stays, and since 1 July 2024 it has applied to business stays as well as private ones. The council’s amendment of 6 February 2024 is the latest rule text we found on stadt-koeln.de; we found no 2026 change.
| Item | Cologne’s position |
|---|---|
| Rate | 5% of the amount the guest pays for the stay, VAT included |
| What is left out | A levy the hotel passes on to you, and the VAT on that levy |
| VAT on the room | 7% on short-term lodging; the city counts cleaning, bed linen and similar services at that rate in the base |
| Booked through a platform | The amount you paid minus the platform fee you were charged |
Our arithmetic, for illustration only: a double room at €150 a night including VAT carries €7.50 of levy a night, so three nights cost €450 plus €22.50, or €472.50. The city’s list of what counts toward the base names services taxed at the 7% rate. We read that as leaving out a separately charged breakfast, but ask your hotel how it itemises the bill.
Getting in from the airport and by train, and around
- From Cologne Bonn Airport. The airport says it has its own ICE station near both terminals and is served around the clock by S-Bahn, regional and bus lines, plus an express bus to Bonn Hauptbahnhof. Deutsche Bahn says the S19 runs from Köln Hauptbahnhof to the airport every 20 minutes and takes about 14 minutes.
- Fares. The VRS single-ticket table, current from 1 June 2026, lists €2.90 for a short-distance ticket (boarding plus four stops, valid 20 minutes) and €4.00 for price level 1b, which covers Aachen, Cologne and Bonn, valid for 90 minutes. The table does not name the airport, so check the airport-to-Hauptbahnhof fare in the VRS app or on go.Rheinland before you buy. Deutsche Bahn adds that a long-distance ticket bought through to Köln-Bonn airport also covers the S-Bahn leg.
- Trains in. Deutsche Bahn’s timetable pages for Friday 6 November, a sample day rather than a December promise, show a direct ICE from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to Köln Hauptbahnhof in 1h05, Munich in about 4h20 with one change, and Berlin in 5h11 to 6h01 on the services listed.
- Rail works: only bahn.de can settle it. Deutsche Bahn’s press release of 18 December 2025 says trains keep reaching Köln Hauptbahnhof during the works on the right Rhine line, which run from 10 July to 11 December 2026. It plans the second closure for the station’s signal box in 2027 and had set no date. That is a December 2025 statement, so check your date on bahn.de before you book a non-refundable fare.
- To the markets. Heinzels Wintermärchen says you can reach its markets by U-Bahn from the Hauptbahnhof, from the Heumarkt stop (lines 1, 5, 7 and 9) or from Rathaus (line 5), and recommends the park-and-ride sites over driving into the centre. The Harbour market says bus 133 links the Chocolate Museum with Chlodwigplatz, Ubierring and Heumarkt, and Heinzels says a Christmas Market Express connects all the Cologne markets (details on bimmelbahnen.de).
The Dom and Hauptbahnhof: market at the door, station next to it
The Cathedral market stands on the Roncalliplatz in front of the cathedral, and the main station is a few minutes’ walk away (Accor lists 200 m from one hotel here), so this is the area for a short trip or a late train. The price is that you sleep in a busy corner of the city.
Where to stay near the Dom and Hauptbahnhof
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Excelsior Hotel Ernst, splurge. A five-star hotel at Trankgasse 1-5 that says it sits right opposite the cathedral, with 133 rooms and suites, some with a cathedral view, and a Michelin-starred East Asian restaurant. Check-in is from 3pm. Choose it for the grandest address by the cathedral. Watch out: the page gives no room sizes, and early check-in costs extra and depends on availability. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Mondial am Dom Cologne - MGallery, comfortable. At Kurt-Hackenberg-Platz 1, which Accor lists 150 m from the cathedral and 200 m from the main station, with a sauna, a fitness area and the Mondial 1516 restaurant. Choose it for the shortest walk to the Cathedral market. Watch out: its standard and business rooms are listed at 16 m², so look at the room type if you have luggage. Check rates on Booking.com →
- ibis Köln am Dom, budget. At Bahnhofsvorplatz, which the hotel says is integrated into the main station, with every room looking over the old town. Choose it for stepping off a train into bed. Watch out: the single-bed room is listed at 10 m², and Accor lists its car park as near the property rather than on site. Check rates on Booking.com →
Altstadt and Heumarkt: lanes, brewhouses and Heinzels
Heinzels Wintermärchen sets up in the old town across the Heumarkt and the Alter Markt, and the hotels below are the ones nearest to it.
Where to stay in the Altstadt and Heumarkt
- Dorint Hotel am Heumarkt Köln, comfortable. At Pipinstraße 1, with 261 rooms in six categories plus a presidential suite; the standard double is about 28 to 30 m², and the hotel says the Rhine, the cathedral and the main station are within walking distance. Choose it for a larger room beside Heinzels. Watch out: parking at the hotel is €36 for 24 hours. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Aparthotel Adagio Köln City, good value. At Blaubach 3, which Accor describes as a 10-minute walk from the cathedral, with studios for two at 25 m² and a 45 m² apartment for four, all with kitchens. Choose it for cooking breakfast and spreading out. Watch out: breakfast is an extra, parking is a paid public garage rather than the hotel’s own, and Accor puts the main station 1.6 km away, a 17-minute walk. Check rates on Booking.com →
Neumarkt and the Rings: shopping streets and the Markt der Engel
The Markt der Engel says the Neumarkt is in the centre of Cologne, next to the Schildergasse, Mittelstraße and Ehrenstraße shopping streets. Motel One is on Cäcilienstraße, ibis Köln Centrum is near Barbarossaplatz and the Steigenberger is on the Habsburgerring, so the three are not equally close to the square.
Where to stay near the Neumarkt and the Rings
- Motel One Köln-Neumarkt, budget. At Cäcilienstraße 32, which Motel One describes as centrally located on the former market square; the standard room is 16 m² with a 160 cm bed, and a Contipark garage sits directly beneath the hotel. Choose it for a tidy design-led bed by the Markt der Engel. Watch out: the rooms are compact, and the garage is a public Contipark one, where the hotel says a stamped ticket saves €7 per 24 hours. Check rates on Booking.com →
- ibis Köln Centrum, budget. At Neue Weyerstraße 4, between the Rings and the old town according to Accor, with 63 garage spaces. Choose it for the lowest-cost bed in this part of the city. Watch out: the standard room is 13 m², and the garage entrance is 1.80 m high, so it will not take a van or roof box. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Steigenberger Hotel Köln, comfortable. A 305-room hotel at Habsburgerring 9-13 with business rooms of 23 m², superior rooms of 28 m² and a garage at the hotel for a fee. Choose it for roomier space on the Ring. Watch out: the hotel itself puts the cathedral and the Rhine promenade about 20 minutes away on foot. Check rates on Booking.com →
Friesenviertel and the Belgian Quarter: bars and a rooftop
The 25hours hotel describes the Friesenviertel as known for lively nightlife, trendy bars and varied dining, with the Belgian Quarter and Ehrenstraße within walking distance. You give up the walk-out-the-door market, and the Stadtgarten market, whose dates we could not confirm, is in the Belgian Quarter.
Where to stay in the Friesenviertel and the Belgian Quarter
- 25hours Hotel The Circle, comfortable. At Im Klapperhof 22-24, with 207 rooms in a listed building, Friesenplatz underground station beside it, a rooftop restaurant and bar with views of the cathedral and a wellness area with a sauna. Choose it for a lively base with a rooftop drink. Watch out: the underground car park is limited and costs €23 a day, and the page gives no walking time to the markets. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Pullman Cologne, splurge. At Helenenstrasse 14, which Accor puts 300 m from Friesenplatz and Appelhofplatz stations; superior rooms are 25 m² and there is a spa and a skyline bar. Choose it for space and a spa after a cold day. Watch out: Accor lists the cathedral at 1 km, a 15-minute walk, and the main station at 1 km, a 10-minute walk. Check rates on Booking.com →
Rheinauhafen and the southern Altstadt: the harbour market
The Harbour market sets up on the square in front of the Chocolate Museum at the entrance to the Rheinauhafen, which the Chocolate Museum says is a few minutes on foot along the Rhine promenade from the old town and the cathedral.
Where to stay in the Rheinauhafen and the southern Altstadt
- Hotel Lyskirchen, comfortable. A four-star hotel at Filzengraben 26-32, a few minutes’ walk from the Rhine and the old town, with a pool, sauna, gym and a 32-space garage; dogs are welcome for €15 a room. Choose it for a pool after a day outside. Watch out: its most popular room category is listed at 13 to 18 m², and the garage is small. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Novotel Köln City, good value. A four-star hotel at Bayenstrasse 51 on the Rheinauhafen, with a standard room of 22 m² that sleeps up to four, a sauna with a cathedral view open 6pm to 10pm and a courtyard garden. Choose it for the Harbour market and family space. Watch out: Accor puts the main station 1.7 km away, a 20-minute walk. Check rates on Booking.com →
How to book Cologne at Christmas
- Add the levy. Count 5% on top of the room price when you compare totals, and ask whether breakfast is itemised separately.
- Pick by which market you want most. Each market has its own area above, so choose the one that matches your first evening.
- Allow for different dates. The Harbour market opens first, on 13 November, and the Heumarkt market runs longest, to 10 January.
- Check room size. Several rooms here are 10 to 16 m², so look at the room type if you have luggage or are travelling with a child.
- Check your train date. Deutsche Bahn had works on the right Rhine line until 11 December, so confirm the journey on bahn.de.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and direct booking versus online agencies covers when to go direct; Hotel Lyskirchen advertises a saving of at least 10% on its own booking page.

Heinzels Wintermärchen is on the Heumarkt from 23 November to 10 January 2027 and on the Alter Markt from 23 November to 23 December. The Harbour market runs 13 November to 3 January 2027.
What are the opening hours of the Cologne Cathedral Christmas market in 2026?
The Cathedral market's own site gives Sunday to Wednesday 11am to 9pm, Thursday and Friday 11am to 10pm and Saturday 10am to 10pm. It is closed on Sunday 22 November. The Markt der Engel is open 11am to 9pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am to 10pm on Friday and Saturday.
What is the best area to stay for the Cologne Christmas markets?
The Dom and Hauptbahnhof area puts you by the Cathedral market on the Roncalliplatz, with the main station a few minutes' walk away. Altstadt and Heumarkt suit Heinzels Wintermärchen, Neumarkt suits the Markt der Engel, and the Rheinauhafen is by the Harbour market at the Chocolate Museum. The Friesenviertel and Belgian Quarter are known for bars and restaurants, but you give up a market at the door.
Does Cologne have a hotel tax in 2026?
Yes. The Kulturförderabgabe (Übernachtungssteuer) is 5% of the amount you pay for the stay, VAT included, and it has applied to business stays as well as private ones since 1 July 2024. On our arithmetic, a room at €150 a night for three nights adds €22.50, making €472.50. We found no 2026 change to the rate on stadt-koeln.de.
How do I get from Cologne Bonn Airport to the Christmas markets?
Deutsche Bahn says the S19 runs from Köln Hauptbahnhof to the airport every 20 minutes and takes about 14 minutes, so take it to the main station, which is next to the Cathedral market. VRS lists €4.00 for a price level 1b single, valid 90 minutes, but its table does not name the airport, so check the fare in the VRS app before you buy.
Are there train works affecting a trip to Cologne in December 2026?
Deutsche Bahn's press release of 18 December 2025 says trains keep reaching Köln Hauptbahnhof during the right Rhine line works, which run from 10 July to 11 December 2026, and plans the station's signal-box closure for 2027 with no date set. That is a December 2025 statement, so check your own date on bahn.de before you book a non-refundable fare.
