Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt runs from Friday 27 November to Thursday 24 December 2026 on the Hauptmarkt, and it is one of the busiest Christmas markets you can choose: the city’s press office says it drew more than two million visitors in 2025. The hotel bill has one unusual feature. Nuremberg charges no city or overnight tax, because Bavarian law bars municipalities from levying one, so the price you see carries only German VAT, which is 7% on a room.
This guide covers five areas, 12 hotels, the confirmed 2026 dates and hours, the tax position and the journey in. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.
The short answer
| If you want… | Stay in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| to sleep on the market square | The Hauptmarkt | The Christkindlesmarkt is held on the Hauptmarkt, and one hotel below has its address on it |
| old lanes under the castle | The castle district | The three hotels here describe themselves as in the castle district, below the Kaiserburg or at its foot |
| a main-street base for shops and the market | Königstraße and the Lorenz side | The city’s recommended station, Lorenzkirche, is on the U1 line, and Königstraße runs from the station into the old town |
| to arrive by train and walk in | The Hauptbahnhof | Three hotels sit on or a short walk from the station squares |
| a quieter bed and a tram or train ride | The Plärrer and the Wöhrder Wiese | Both lie on the edge of the old town, so you travel in for the market |

The 2026 market: dates, hours and what is on
The city of Nuremberg and the market’s own site confirm the 2026 dates. The city’s English press sheet and a few older pages give slightly different opening hours, so the table follows the city’s own Christkindlesmarkt page.
| What | 2026 |
|---|---|
| Market dates | Friday 27 November to Thursday 24 December |
| Opening day, 27 November | Open 10am to 9pm, paused 5:30pm to 6pm for the opening ceremony, then open until 10pm for the Long Night of the Christkindlesmarkt |
| Every other day | 10am to 9pm |
| Last day, 24 December | 10am to 2pm |
| Opening ceremony | Friday 27 November, 5:30pm: the Nuremberg Christkind opens the market with her Prologue |
The city’s English press sheet says the market is open until 10pm on opening day and lists no pause, while a city tourism listing gives 10pm every day; the market’s own site and the city’s market page give 9pm, which is what we use. Check the day’s hours on christkindlesmarkt.de before you plan an evening.
The market is on the Hauptmarkt. A few more things sit around it:
- Market of the Sister Cities: stalls from partner cities on the Rathausplatz beside the market, open 27 November to 23 December. The city’s market notice calls it a separate market.
- Children’s Christmas Market (Kinderweihnacht): on Hans-Sachs-Platz with a carousel, a steam railway and a mini Ferris wheel, open 27 November to 30 December.
- Sternenhaus: the children’s culture programme, 28 November to 23 December. The city says tickets sell out quickly.
- Original Regional: four stalls beside St Sebald’s church with regional drinks and honey.
- Winter village: a Ferris wheel and stalls on the Jakobsplatz, open 13 November 2026 to 9 January 2027.
Crowds and rules. The city gives no advice on quieter days. It does say to expect an exceptionally high crowd and does not recommend coming by car. Access routes are closed with barriers and police vehicles, and uniformed police carry out random bag checks. The city also warns about pickpockets and says the market may close early in a storm, with loudspeaker announcements.
Tax and VAT in Nuremberg in 2026
Nuremberg has no city tax in 2026, and the reason is in state law. Article 3 paragraph 3 of the Bavarian Municipal Levies Act lists an overnight tax (Übernachtungsteuer) among the taxes that municipalities may not levy. Munich and other Bavarian cities challenged that ban, and on 14 November 2025 the Bavarian Constitutional Court dismissed their case (Vf. 3-VII-23). We found no 2026 change to the law.
The same act allows a spa levy (Kurbeitrag) only for municipalities recognised as spas, health resorts or recreation places. We found no sign that Nuremberg is one, and the city’s tourism and market pages we read mention no accommodation charge.
| Item | 2026 position |
|---|---|
| City or overnight tax | None: Bavarian law bars municipalities from levying an overnight tax |
| German VAT on a room | 7%, under the reduced rate for short-term lodging |
| Services not tied to the room | The statute says the reduced rate does not cover services that do not directly serve the letting, even if the room price includes them |
Our arithmetic, for illustration only: on a room price of €107 including VAT, €7 is VAT. As we read the statute, a separately charged breakfast falls under the standard 19% rate. Two adults for three nights pay no city tax on top of the room price, but ask whether breakfast, parking and any fees are in the quote.
Getting in from the airport and by train, and around
- From Nuremberg Airport. The operator VAG says the U2 underground reaches the main station in 13 minutes, with connections usually every 10 minutes from 04:30 to 00:30. VAG’s directions for the old town are to change at the main station to the U1 and get off at Lorenzkirche, or to stay on the U2 to Wöhrder Wiese, which it puts about 850 metres on foot from the market square.
- Fares. An adult single ticket in VAG’s price level A is €3.90 (€3.65 online), valid for 90 minutes. A short-distance single, two stops on the underground, is €2.10. A solo day ticket is €10.60 and the day ticket plus, for one to six people, is €15.50.
- Trains: the Munich line is under works. Deutsche Bahn’s press release of 9 October 2026 says the Nuremberg to Ingolstadt high-speed line is closed from 30 October (22:00) to 12 December inclusive. That covers the first 16 days of the market. DB says Munich to Berlin trains take about 45 minutes longer, direct Munich to Frankfurt trains via Nuremberg are discontinued, and regional trains are rerouted or replaced by buses. It gives no new Munich to Nuremberg journey time, so check your date. From 13 December the line is open again.
- From Frankfurt and Berlin. Deutsche Bahn’s timetable pages show a direct ICE from Frankfurt am Main to Nuremberg in 2h01 on 5 November, and from Berlin in 2h45 on 10 November. DB says Nuremberg to Berlin runs without restrictions. These are sample days, not December promises.
- To the market. The city says the U1 stop Lorenzkirche is the best way to the market. Its exit toward the Museumsbrücke is closed for refurbishment, so use the exit toward Karolinenstraße or the one toward Königstraße. Weißer Turm and the Hauptbahnhof are alternatives. On Advent weekends VAG doubles U1 service in the city centre from 9am to 8pm.
- Buses, lifts and cars. Lines 36 (Augustinerstraße), 37, 46 and 47 (Rathaus) serve the market. Lorenzkirche station’s lift goes only from platform to passage; from there the Galeria Karstadt lift runs Monday to Saturday, 9:30am to 8pm. The city does not recommend driving.
The Hauptmarkt: sleep on the square
The Hauptmarkt is where the Christkindlesmarkt is held, so a hotel here means no journey at all. The cost is that this is the busiest square in town through the whole four weeks.
Where to stay on the Hauptmarkt
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Sorat Hotel Saxx Nürnberg, comfortable. At Hauptmarkt 17, with its entrance on Waaggasse 7; Sorat lists it as three stars garni and gives 103 rooms, with check-in from 3pm. Choose it for the market square itself. Watch out: hotel parking, €17 a day in an underground garage with its entrance on Winklerstraße, cannot be reserved. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Agneshof Nürnberg, good value. A 74-room, three-star garni hotel at Agnesgasse 10, in what it calls a quiet, hidden spot between St Sebald’s church and the Imperial Castle, with a courtyard garden. Choose it for a calm lane a short walk from the market. Watch out: the underground garage has 20 spaces for cars up to 1.50 m high at €15 a day, so it is no use for vans, and booking a space is on request. Check rates on Booking.com →
The castle district: old lanes under the Kaiserburg
North of the Hauptmarkt the lanes climb toward the castle. The hotels here describe themselves as in the castle district or at the foot of the Kaiserburg, and the market is a short walk down the hill.
Where to stay in the castle district
- Hotel Elch, comfortable. A family-run boutique hotel at Irrerstrasse 11 in a half-timbered house from the 14th century, first mentioned as a hostel in 1342; bicycles and dogs are welcome. Choose it for sleeping in a medieval house. Watch out: the pages we read give no room sizes or lift information, so ask before booking if stairs matter. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Burghotel Nürnberg, comfortable. A family-run hotel at Lammsgasse 3 in the Sebald old town below the castle, with 40 rooms, a lift, a 9 by 5 metre indoor pool and a sauna for up to eight people. Choose it for a pool after a day on your feet. Watch out: its offers section was still headed 2025 when we read it, so confirm December terms with the hotel. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Dürer Hotel, comfortable. A privately run hotel with 102 rooms at Neutormauer 32, which says it is in the old city at the foot of the Kaiserburg, with a Mediterranean inner garden and a parking garage. Choose it for a garden courtyard under the castle. Watch out: the rooms list a fan rather than air conditioning, and multi-bed rooms and junior suites are booked on request only. Check rates on Booking.com →
Königstraße and the Lorenz side
Königstraße is the main street from the station into the old town, and the St Lorenz church and its U1 stop are the city’s preferred way to reach the market. The two hotels below sit on it.
Where to stay on Königstraße
- Hotel Drei Raben, splurge. Nuremberg’s first theme hotel at Königstrasse 63, which says it is just minutes from the main station, with a private underground garage, breakfast from 6:30am to 10:30am (from 7am at weekends) and complimentary wine from 6pm to 8pm. Choose it for a hotel with a story in every room. Watch out: the page quotes €25 for valet parking in the garage, and gives no room sizes. Check rates on Booking.com →
- ibis Nürnberg Altstadt, good value. At Koenigstrasse 74, 100 m from the main station by Accor’s count, with 61 air-conditioned rooms; the standard double is 17 m². Choose it for a plain bed on the main street. Watch out: Accor said the hotel would be renovated from July to early August 2026 while staying open, and the car park is nearby, not on site. Check rates on Booking.com →
The Hauptbahnhof: arrive by train
A hotel by the station suits a late train or a day trip out, and the old town is a short walk or one U-Bahn stop away. The trade-off is a bed away from the market square.
Where to stay near the Hauptbahnhof
- Novotel Nürnberg Centre Ville, splurge. At Bahnhofstrasse 12, with rooms from 27 m² for a standard twin to 34 m² for an Executive room, air conditioning and 125 garage spaces. Accor says the hotel has direct underground and tram access to the old town. Choose it for the most room space in this guide. Watch out: garage spaces are subject to availability and the page gives no parking price. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Motel One Nürnberg-City, budget. At Bahnhofstraße 18, which calls itself right at the central station; rooms are 16 m², luggage storage is free and breakfast runs 6am to 10am on weekdays and 7am to 11am at weekends. Choose it for a design-led budget bed by the station. Watch out: the underground car park has limited spaces at €20 for 24 hours. Check rates on Booking.com →
- B&B Hotel Nürnberg-Hbf, budget. At Marienstraße 10, which the hotel’s directions place along Gleißbühelstraße from the station, turning into Marienstraße after 390 m; the rooms are air-conditioned. Choose it for a simple room near the station. Watch out: it is a walk from the station square rather than beside it, parking is paid and subject to availability, and breakfast is added as a voucher at checkout. Check rates on Booking.com →
The Plärrer and the Wöhrder Wiese: quieter edges
On the west side of the old town, the Living Hotel is a few minutes on foot from the old town; on the east side, the Novina sits by the Wöhrder Wiese park. Both give up the walk-out-the-door market, and both give a quieter night.
Where to stay on the edges
- Living Hotel Nürnberg, comfortable. An apartment hotel at Obere Kanalstraße 11, which calls itself only a few minutes on foot from the old town; its business rooms are about 21 to 23 m² with a kitchenette, some with a balcony or terrace, and there is a green courtyard. Choose it for a kitchenette and room to spread out. Watch out: its page gives no walking time to the Hauptmarkt, and lists air conditioning only for its maisonettes. Check rates on Booking.com →
- NOVINA Hotel Wöhrdersee, comfortable. A four-star hotel at Dürrenhofstraße 8 with 147 rooms, which says it is quiet yet central at the Wöhrder Wiese park and 10 minutes on foot from the main station; tram, bus and S-Bahn stop in front, and garage parking is €16 a day. Choose it for a four-star in a calm setting. Watch out: it is outside the old town; VAG puts the nearby Wöhrder Wiese stop about 850 metres from the market square. Check rates on Booking.com →
How to book Nuremberg at Christmas
- Book early and read the terms. We did not check live availability or prices, so we quote none; the tiers here reflect category and facilities, not rates. Compare cancellation terms.
- Count the tax correctly. There is no city tax; VAT is already in the room price. Check what breakfast and parking add.
- Choose by how you will move. On the Hauptmarkt or in the castle district you walk everywhere; by the station you walk or take one U-Bahn stop; on the edges you use the tram or the U-Bahn.
- Allow for the Munich line. If you come from Munich, check the journey between 30 October and 12 December, because the high-speed line is closed.
- Check room size. Several rooms here are 16 to 17 m², so look at the room type if you have luggage.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and direct booking versus online agencies covers when to go direct; Hotel Elch advertises 10% off its Boutique and History rooms on its own site, and Sorat advertises a direct-booking discount of up to €20.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Nuremberg Christmas market in 2026?
The Christkindlesmarkt runs Friday 27 November to Thursday 24 December 2026 on the Hauptmarkt. The Nuremberg Christkind opens it with her Prologue at 5:30pm on 27 November. Daily hours are 10am to 9pm, and on 24 December it is open 10am to 2pm.
What is the best area to stay for the Nuremberg Christmas market?
The Hauptmarkt puts you on the market square, and the castle district is a short walk up the hill. Königstraße and the Hauptbahnhof suit a train arrival and are a short walk or one U-Bahn stop from the old town. The Plärrer and the Wöhrder Wiese are quieter but need a tram or U-Bahn ride.
Does Nuremberg have a tourist tax or city tax in 2026?
No. Article 3 of the Bavarian Municipal Levies Act bars municipalities from levying an overnight tax, and the Bavarian Constitutional Court dismissed a challenge on 14 November 2025. German VAT of 7% is already in the room price; a separately charged breakfast is, by our reading, taxed at 19%.
How do I get from Nuremberg airport to the Christmas market?
VAG says the U2 reaches the main station in 13 minutes, usually every 10 minutes from 04:30 to 00:30. Change there to the U1 for Lorenzkirche, the city's preferred stop for the market. A single ticket in price level A is €3.90, valid for 90 minutes.
Is the train from Munich to Nuremberg affected during the Christmas market?
Partly. Deutsche Bahn says the Nuremberg to Ingolstadt high-speed line is closed from 30 October to 12 December 2026, so the first 16 days of the market fall in the closure. DB gives no new Munich to Nuremberg time, so check your date. Nuremberg to Berlin runs without restrictions.
When is the Nuremberg Christmas market least crowded?
The city gives no advice on quieter days. It says to expect an exceptionally high crowd, does not recommend coming by car and carries out random bag checks. The city press office says more than two million people visited in 2025.
