- Frequently asked questions
Vienna’s Christmas markets open early. Schönbrunn starts on 6 November, the Wiener Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz on 13 November, and the Rathausplatz market runs to 26 December. The hotel bill has two features worth knowing before you compare rooms. Since 1 July 2026 the city tax, the Ortstaxe, has been 5% of the price of the stay before VAT and breakfast, and it rises to 8% on 1 July 2027. And a central stretch of the S-Bahn is closed until the end of October 2027, so the airport express now runs as a bus.
This guide covers six areas, 12 hotels, the confirmed 2026 dates and hours, the tax and the journey in. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

The 2026 markets: dates and hours
All the 2026 dates are published, by the Vienna Tourist Board (wien.info) and by the markets’ own sites, so none below is last year’s. The table follows each market’s own site where we could read it, and wien.info for the rest.
| Market | 2026 dates | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Wiener Christkindlmarkt, Rathausplatz | 13 November to 26 December | 10am to 10pm; 24 December 10am to 6:30pm |
| Eistraum ice rink at the Christkindlmarkt | 13 November to 6 January 2027 | 10am to 10pm; 24 December 10am to 6:30pm; closed 31 December |
| Schönbrunn Palace | 6 November to 6 January 2027 | 10am to 9pm to 23 December; 24 December 10am to 4pm; from 25 December 10am to 7pm |
| K&K market, Belvedere | 20 November to 31 December | Monday to Friday 11am to 9pm; Saturday, Sunday and holidays 10am to 9pm; 24 and 31 December 11am to 5pm |
| Christmas Village, Stephansplatz | 6 November to 26 December | 11am to 9pm; 24 December 11am to 4pm; 25 and 26 December 11am to 7pm |
| Am Hof | 13 November to 23 December | Monday to Thursday 11am to 9pm; Friday to Sunday and holidays 10am to 9pm; food until 10pm |
| Old Viennese market, Freyung | 14 November to 23 December | 10am to 9pm |
| Art Advent, Karlsplatz | 13 November to 23 December | 12pm to 8pm; food until 9pm |
| Spittelberg | 13 November to 23 December | Monday to Friday 2pm to 9:30pm; Saturday, Sunday and holidays 11am to 9:30pm |
| Maria-Theresien-Platz | 20 November to 26 December | Monday to Friday 11am to 9pm; Saturday and Sunday 10am to 9pm |
| Christmas Magic, Schwarzenbergplatz | 13 November to 26 December | Monday to Friday 11am to 9pm; Saturday and Sunday 10am to 9pm |
One discrepancy: wien.info lists the Belvedere market as Monday to Friday 11am to 2pm, but the market’s own site gives 11am to 9pm, so we use the latter. Hours can change, so check the market’s site on the day.
How far is each area from the markets? Our arithmetic: straight-line distances between OpenStreetMap coordinates for each hotel’s address and the centre of the market square, rounded to the nearest 50 m. Walking routes are longer, so treat these as minimums.
| Hotel | Nearest markets, straight-line |
|---|---|
| Hotel Regina | Rathausplatz 650 m, Freyung 700 m |
| Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design | Rathausplatz 600 m, Spittelberg 550 m |
| Hotel Wandl | Stephansplatz 200 m, Am Hof 250 m, Freyung 350 m, Rathausplatz 900 m |
| Hotel Sacher Vienna | Karlsplatz 400 m, Stephansplatz 500 m |
| Grand Hotel Wien | Karlsplatz 250 m, Schwarzenbergplatz 300 m, Stephansplatz 650 m |
| The Cloud One Vienna-Staatsoper | Karlsplatz 200 m, Schwarzenbergplatz 500 m |

Vienna’s city tax in 2026
Every place to stay in Vienna, from a hotel to a flat, collects the Ortstaxe for the city. It is a percentage of the price of the stay, not counting VAT or breakfast:
| Period | Ortstaxe |
|---|---|
| Until 30 June 2026 | 3.2% of the price of the stay, after a flat 11% deduction |
| 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 | 5% of the price of the stay |
| From 1 July 2027 | 8% of the price of the stay |
VAT on a room is 10% and is normally already in the rate you see. Minors staying for school or training or in youth hostels, students at Vienna’s universities and colleges, and stays of more than three months are exempt.
Our arithmetic: a room at €220 a night including 10% VAT, room only, is €200 before VAT, so the tax is €10 a night, or €30 for three nights. A Christmas stay in 2026 falls in the 5% band; the same room in July 2027 would carry €16 a night. Many hotels quote the tax on top of the room price, so ask whether your total includes it.
Getting in from the airport, and around
The S-Bahn’s central section between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof is closed from 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027. Trains do not stop at Rennweg or Wien Mitte/Landstraße, which changes the usual routes:
- CAT by bus. The City Airport Train runs as a non-stop premium bus between the airport and Wien Mitte/Landstraße in 21 minutes, every 12 minutes from 7am to 7pm and every 15 minutes at other times. A single is €14.90 and a return €24.90, and tickets bought online are valid for six months. The city stop is at Marxergasse 1b.
- ÖBB Railjet and InterCity. Twice an hour, non-stop to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, or to Wien Meidling in just under 30.
- REX 7 and S7. The REX 7 reaches Wien Hauptbahnhof in around 20 minutes. The S7 now stops short at St. Marx, outside the centre. The fare for either is €5.50: €2.30 from the airport to the city boundary plus €3.20 within Vienna.
- In town. A single ticket is €3.20 and is valid for 80 minutes, with changes; a 24-hour ticket is €10.20, and a 7-day ticket €25.20 digital or €28.90 on paper. Validate a paper ticket before you travel. The Vienna City Card, which includes public transport, starts at €19.
- To the markets. The Rathausplatz market lists trams 1, 71 and D (stop Rathausplatz/Burgtheater), tram 2 (Parliament), the U2 (Rathaus) and the U3 (Volkstheater). The Belvedere market lists tram D to Schloss Belvedere and the U1 to Hauptbahnhof. The Schönbrunn market is about 600 m from either U4 station, Schönbrunn or Hietzing, and trams 10 and 60 and bus 10A stop at Schloss Schönbrunn.
Rathaus and Josefstadt: the big market first
The Rathausplatz market is the headline market, with the ice rink beside it and the Rathaus behind. The streets west and north of it, in Josefstadt and by the Votive Church, are quieter and about 600 m from the market.
Where to stay in Rathaus and Josefstadt
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Hotel Regina, comfortable. A family-run four-star hotel on Rooseveltplatz 15, beside the Votive Church, welcoming guests since 1896, with 165 rooms and individually controllable air conditioning and heating. A standard double is 18 m², a superior double 20 m² and a deluxe room 30 m². Choose it for the Rathausplatz end of town with room to spare. Watch out: the standard double is on the small side, so look at the superior or deluxe rooms if you have luggage. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design, comfortable. A family-run boutique hotel at Lange Gasse 13 in Josefstadt, in a Gründerzeit house, which calls itself the first wine hotel in Vienna, with a wine bar. Design doubles start at 25 m², Classic and Modern doubles at 28 m². Choose it for generous rooms near the Rathaus. Watch out: the hotel says it is a few steps from the Rathaus; we measure about 600 m straight-line to the Rathausplatz market, so expect a short walk, not a step. Check rates on Booking.com →
The Innere Stadt: three markets in minutes
Inside the Ringstraße, the Stephansplatz Christmas Village sits at the foot of St Stephen’s Cathedral, the Am Hof market is a few lanes away, and the Old Viennese market on the Freyung is beyond it. All three are within about 400 m of Hotel Wandl, and the Rathausplatz is under a kilometre. It is the priciest part of the city.
Where to stay in the Innere Stadt
- Hotel Wandl, comfortable. A four-star family hotel at Petersplatz 9 that gives Stephansplatz as 3 minutes’ walk, the Hofburg 5 and the State Opera 7. Standard doubles are 16 m² and superior doubles 30 m², and rates include breakfast, served from 6:30am on weekdays. Choose it for the three central markets on foot. Watch out: it has no parking of its own, and the garage it recommends at Morzinplatz costs €30 for 24 hours, 8 minutes’ walk away. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Sacher Vienna, splurge. A five-star superior hotel at Philharmoniker Straße 4, near the State Opera and the Albertina and open since 1876, with 152 individually designed rooms and suites, the Sacher Boutique Spa and the Original Sacher-Torte. Deluxe rooms are 27 to 39 m². Choose it for the classic Vienna address between Karlsplatz and Stephansplatz. Watch out: a view is its own category, the Deluxe Room with View, so book it by name. Check rates on Booking.com →
The Opera and Karlsplatz: Art Advent and Schwarzenbergplatz
South of the Opera, the Art Advent market stands in front of the Karlskirche on Karlsplatz and the Christmas Magic market is around the Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain on Schwarzenbergplatz. Karlsplatz is also the U-Bahn interchange (U1, U2 and U4), and the U4 runs from there to Schönbrunn. Stephansplatz is about 500 to 750 m away.
Where to stay by the Opera and Karlsplatz
- Grand Hotel Wien, splurge. On Kärntner Ring 9, in business since 1870, with 88 Deluxe Rooms of 30 to 35 m², air conditioning and an underground car park. The hotel lists trams 1, 2, 71 and D at Kärntner Ring/Oper and the U1, U2 and U4 at Karlsplatz/Oper. Choose it for Karlsplatz and Schwarzenbergplatz without a journey. Watch out: standard rooms face the inner courtyard, not the Ring, and Booking.com lists the hotel as Eurostars Grand Hotel Wien. Check rates on Booking.com →
- The Cloud One Vienna-Staatsoper, budget. A hotel at Elisabethstraße 5 in a listed building, which puts the Karlsplatz U-Bahn about 100 m away. The standard room is 16 m². Choose it for the cheapest bed this close to Karlsplatz. Watch out: the Cosy Cloud rooms are 14 m² and on the basement level. Check rates on Booking.com →
Spittelberg and Neubau: lanes and the Spittelberg market
The Spittelberg market fills the cobbled lanes of the Biedermeier quarter in the 7th district: Spittelberggasse, Stiftgasse, Schrankgasse and Gutenberggasse. The Maria-Theresien-Platz market is a short walk east, between the two museums. It is the market to choose for evenings, since it stays open to 9:30pm.
Where to stay in Spittelberg and Neubau
- Altstadt Vienna, comfortable. A boutique hotel at Kirchengasse 41 on the Spittelberg, in a patrician house, with 62 rooms and suites, each different, and a collection of contemporary art that includes Warhol. Choose it for the Spittelberg market on your doorstep, about 350 m straight-line by our count. Watch out: because no two rooms are alike, check the category you are booking, not only the gallery. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel am Brillantengrund, good value. A family hotel at Bandgasse 4 with 34 rooms, each styled from the 1950s to the 1970s, around a palm-lined courtyard, with a Filipino kitchen. Doubles run about 18 to 22 m². Choose it for design at a fair price. Watch out: it is on the Mariahilfer Straße side, about 750 m straight-line from the Spittelberg lanes, and its smallest rooms, for solo travellers, are about 14 to 16 m². Check rates on Booking.com →
Landstraße: the Belvedere’s imperial market
The K&K market stands in front of the Upper Belvedere and is deliberately small: the organiser says it has a maximum of 35 huts. It opens 20 November, a week after the Rathausplatz market, and closes on 31 December. Rennweg, in the embassy district, is calm, and Wien Hauptbahnhof for the Railjet is close.
Where to stay in Landstraße
- Hotel Daniel Vienna, good value. At Landstraßer Gürtel 5, with the Belvedere as its neighbour, Wien Hauptbahnhof about a 10-minute walk away by the hotel’s count, tram O a few metres from the door, a bakery and an urban garden with bees. Choose it for the Belvedere market and the station at a fair price. Watch out: the Belvedere room is the large one at 40 m², so check which room category your rate is for. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Austria Trend Hotel Savoyen Vienna, comfortable. A four-star superior hotel at Rennweg 16, in the revitalised building of the former imperial state and court print works, with a six-floor atrium and a gym and wellness area. Superior rooms are 32 to 37 m². Choose it for space near the palace. Watch out: it is also a large conference hotel, with a ballroom of 1,056 m². Check rates on Booking.com →
Hietzing and Meidling: Schönbrunn
The Schönbrunn market fills the palace’s Ehrenhof with more than 90 huts and, for 2026, runs 6 November to 6 January, and from 25 December it stays open until 7pm. It is a ride from the centre, 600 m on foot from either U4 station, so this base suits late December and a day at the palace.
Where to stay near Schönbrunn
- Austria Trend Parkhotel Schönbrunn, comfortable. A four-star superior hotel at Hietzinger Hauptstraße 10-14, in the former guest house of Emperor Franz Joseph I, which says the palace and the zoo are a ten-minute walk away. Classic rooms are 24 to 32 m² with adjustable air conditioning. Choose it for the Schönbrunn market within reach on foot. Watch out: the hotel garage is €45 a day. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Vienna-Schönbrunn, budget. At Rechte Wienzeile 223, opposite the Meidling Hauptstraße U-Bahn station, and part of the Motel One family while staying an independent hotel. Doubles are 21 m² and superior doubles 24 m². Choose it for a budget base by the U-Bahn. Watch out: its page gives the walk to the palace as ten minutes in one place and about 15 in another, so allow the longer. Check rates on Booking.com →
How to book Vienna at Christmas
- Count the tax. For a 2026 Christmas stay, add 5% of the room price before VAT, breakfast not included: €10 a night on a €220 room.
- Check the opening dates against your trip. Several markets close on 23 December, while Schönbrunn, the Rathausplatz ice rink and the Stephansplatz village run later.
- Plan around the S-Bahn closure. Until the end of October 2027, the CAT bus ends at Wien Mitte/Landstraße and the Railjet and REX 7 at Wien Hauptbahnhof; a hotel near one of them saves a change with luggage.
- Check room size. Several rooms here are 14 to 18 m², so look at the room type.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared and booking direct or through an agency go through where to book.
