Okinawa’s hotel bill is about to change, but not yet. The prefecture’s accommodation tax, 2% of the room price, applies to nights from 1 February 2027, so a stay in 2026 pays only the room rate and Japan’s 10% consumption tax. The choice that matters more is the one the island forces on everyone: base yourself in Naha, where a monorail runs from the airport, or on the resort coast to the north, where most visitors want a car.

This guide covers five areas, from Naha’s Kokusai-dori to the Churaumi Aquarium, 12 hotels, the tax and the airport links. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here. Ishigaki and the other islands are separate trips and are not covered.

Okinawa’s accommodation tax

Okinawa Prefecture’s accommodation tax is not in force in 2026. The prefecture’s own page gives 1 February 2027 as the start, for nights from that date, and says it applies even to rooms booked before then. The rate is 2% of the room-only price per person per night, with the tax capped at ¥2,000.

The base is the price you pay minus anything that is not the room: breakfast, activities and the consumption tax. It is rounded down to the nearest ¥1,000 first, and capped at ¥100,000. Hotels collect the tax; the prefecture says it is paid at the property, although it may be included in what you pay a booking site or travel agent.

Room price per person per night, before consumption tax Prefecture tax from 1 February 2027
¥8,500 (counted as ¥8,000) ¥160
¥15,000 ¥300
¥30,000 ¥600
¥60,000 ¥1,200
¥100,000 or more ¥2,000

The first row is the prefecture’s own example; the others are our arithmetic. For a worked example, also ours: a couple pays ¥33,000 a night for a room only, including the 10% consumption tax. Before that tax the room costs ¥30,000, or ¥15,000 each, so the tax is ¥300 each, ¥600 a night and ¥2,400 over four nights.

Some places will add a town tax. The prefecture says six municipalities plan their own: Motobu, Onna, Chatan, Nago, Ishigaki and Miyakojima, including the areas in this guide. Where a municipality charges too, the prefecture’s page splits the same 2% into 0.8% for the prefecture, capped at ¥800, and 1.2% for the municipality, capped at ¥1,200. Naha is not on the prefecture’s list.

On top of the room rate, Japan’s standard consumption tax rate is 10%, and Japanese hotel rates are normally quoted with it included.

Getting in from Naha Airport, and around

Naha: Kokusai-dori and Makishi

For a first trip without a car, this is the base. Kokusai-dori is Naha’s main street, with Makishi Public Market and the covered arcades beside it, and three Yui Rail stations (Kenchomae, Miebashi and Makishi) are within a walk. You can reach most of Naha on foot or by monorail and add a hired car only for the days you leave town. See things to do in Okinawa for what to fit in.

Naha: Asahibashi

Asahibashi is the transport end of Naha: a monorail station, the Naha Bus Terminal, where the limousine buses stop, and a shorter ride from the airport than the stations farther up the line. It is a quieter base than Kokusai-dori, with the street about ten minutes on foot.

Chatan: American Village

Chatan sits on the west coast, about 40 minutes from the airport by car, and mixes a beach, shops, restaurants and a US-themed district known as American Village. It suits a stay that is half city and half beach, and a visitor with a car will find it easiest to reach.

Onna: the resort coast

Onna village is where Okinawa’s big beach resorts line the west coast, about an hour from the airport. This is the place for a few days of pool, sea and room service, not for sightseeing on foot, and you will need the limousine bus or a car to see anything beyond your hotel’s grounds.

Motobu: the Churaumi Aquarium

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is in Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula, far to the north. Staying beside it puts the aquarium on your doorstep, but it is a long way from everything else: the hotels put it at 60 to 100 minutes from the airport by car, and the buses take more than two hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Okinawa for a first trip?

Naha, near Kokusai-dori, if you are not renting a car: the Yui Rail monorail runs from the airport, and Kokusai-dori, Makishi Public Market and three monorail stations are close. Choose Chatan for a beach and American Village, Onna for beach resorts and Motobu for the Churaumi Aquarium; those areas are easiest with a car.

Does Okinawa have an accommodation tax in 2026?

No. Okinawa Prefecture's accommodation tax starts on 1 February 2027, for nights from that date, including rooms booked earlier. It is 2% of the room-only price per person per night, rounded down to the nearest ¥1,000 first, with the tax capped at ¥2,000.

How much is the accommodation tax in Okinawa?

From 1 February 2027, 2% of the per-person, per-night room price before consumption tax and meals, capped at ¥2,000. On a room of ¥30,000 before tax for two people, that is ¥300 each, ¥600 a night. Where a municipality such as Chatan, Onna or Motobu also charges, the prefecture's page splits the 2% into 0.8% for the prefecture and 1.2% for the municipality.

How do you get from Naha Airport to Naha by monorail?

The Yui Rail starts at Naha Airport station. It takes 11 minutes and costs ¥290 to Asahibashi, 13 minutes and ¥290 to Kenchomae (Prefectural Office), and 16 minutes and ¥320 to Makishi, by the operator's fare table.

How do you get from Naha Airport to the resorts?

Okinawa Bus runs the Airport Limousine Bus: from 1 April 2026 the adult fare is ¥1,000 to Chatan Gate Way and the Chatan hotels and ¥1,700 to most Onna stops. In the operator's sample runs the bus takes about 80 minutes to Chatan and about an hour to the first Onna stops. Okinawa Bus lists no limousine route to Motobu; the Orion Hotel Motobu's page lists scheduled buses of more than two hours, and about 60 minutes by car.

Do you need a car in Okinawa?

Not in Naha, where the Yui Rail and walking cover most of the centre. For Chatan, Onna and Motobu a car is the easiest way to move around: Okinawa's tourism site says there are many rental companies across the islands, and some hotels sell stays bundled with a rental car. By the hotels' figures the drive from the airport is about 40 minutes to Chatan, 60 to 70 to Onna and 60 to 100 to Motobu.
