Prague’s two big Christmas markets, on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, run from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, according to the organiser’s own pages. Smaller markets open earlier and close on Christmas Eve. The hotel bill has one line that is easy to miss: the city’s local fee for staying overnight, which is 50 CZK per person per night, and it is charged in koruna even when your hotel quotes in euros.
This guide covers five areas, 12 hotels, the 2026 dates and hours, the fee and the journey in. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

The 2026 markets: dates, hours and what is on
Prague City Tourism’s portal said, when we read it, that its Christmas 2026/2027 information would appear in late November. So the dates below come from the market organiser, Taiko, and from Visit Czechia, the national tourist board; the smaller markets’ dates are less firmly confirmed. Check trhypraha.cz before you fix a trip around one date.
| Market | 2026 dates | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town Square | 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 | Daily 10am to 10pm (organiser) |
| Wenceslas Square | 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 | Daily 10am to 10pm (organiser) |
| Náměstí Míru (Peace Square) | 20 November to 24 December 2026 | The organiser’s page lists none |
| Republic Square | 25 November to 24 December 2026 | Not listed |
| Tylovo náměstí (Tyl Square) | 26 November to 24 December 2026 | Not listed |
Three things are less settled. Visit Czechia lists Anděl, Jiřího z Poděbrad Square and Prague Castle with no dates, and we found no 2026 announcement for a castle market, so do not plan around one. Hotel Anna’s page gives Anděl as 27 November to 31 December, which we could not confirm elsewhere. Kudy z nudy, a Czech tourism listings site, gives Wenceslas Square hours of 10am to 2pm on 24 December and noon to 10pm on 25 and 26 December, which the organiser’s pages do not mention.
The organiser says the programme on Old Town Square runs daily from 4pm to 7pm, and recommends public transport, naming the metro line A stations Staroměstská and Můstek. Hotel Anna’s page says the Old Town Square tree is lit on 28 November.
Prague’s local fee in 2026
Every paid stay in Prague carries the city’s local fee, the poplatek z pobytu. The district office pages of Prague 1 and Prague 5 give the rate as 50 CZK for each started day of the stay except the day of arrival, which in practice means per person per night. Under-18s are exempt, as are a few other groups the pages list, such as holders of the ZTP/P card with a companion. We found no announced change for the market season.
| Item | 2026 position |
|---|---|
| Local fee | 50 CZK per person for each started day, arrival day excluded |
| Who pays | Guests not registered at an address in the city; the hotel collects it |
| Exempt | Under-18s, and a few other groups listed on the district pages |
Our arithmetic, for illustration only: a couple staying five nights pays 2 × 5 × 50 = 500 CZK in fees, on top of the room. Many hotels quote in euros while the fee is set in koruna, so check whether a quoted total already includes it before you compare.
Getting in from the airport, and around
Václav Havel Airport has two terminals: Terminal 1 for flights from outside the Schengen area, such as the USA and Japan, and Terminal 2 for Schengen flights. PID is the city’s integrated transport system.
- Line 59 and metro line A. The cheapest way in. The operator DPP says line 59 runs to Nádraží Veleslavín, on metro line A, every 3 to 10 minutes and in 17 minutes; PID puts the whole trip to the centre at about 35 minutes. Metro A serves Staroměstská and Můstek, the two stations the market organiser names.
- Line 100. Runs to Zličín, on metro line B, with PID estimating about 45 minutes to the centre. DPP gives the bus leg as 16 minutes, every 10 to 20 minutes.
- The Airport Express, line AE. Runs from Terminal 1 to the main railway station, Hlavní nádraží, on metro line C, in about 45 minutes by PID’s estimate. It costs 200 CZK, or 100 CZK for children aged 6 to 15, which the Czech railways’ page says you can buy from the driver. Ordinary PID tickets and the 24-hour and 72-hour passes are not valid on it. At Terminal 2 the AE only lets passengers off.
- At night. Lines 907 and 910 leave from Terminal 2 every 30 minutes, on the 90-minute fare.
- Fares for lines 59, 100 and the night lines. One 90-minute ticket covers the bus and the metro: 46 CZK in the PID Lítačka app, 50 CZK on paper, or 55 CZK by SMS. PID’s airport page still says that, because of road repairs in front of Terminal 1 since 3 March 2025, city transport boards at the Terminal 2 stop.
- In town. A 30-minute ticket is 36 CZK in the app or 39 CZK on paper, 90 minutes 46 or 50 CZK, 24 hours 140 or 150 CZK, and 72 hours 340 or 350 CZK. These are full fares for passengers aged 15 to 60, and luggage up to 25 × 45 × 70 cm travels free.
Old Town Square: sleep on the main market
The biggest market is held on Old Town Square, so a hotel here means no journey at all. The cost is that it is the busiest square in town for nearly six weeks.
Where to stay on Old Town Square
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Hotel U Prince, splurge. A hotel on Old Town Square at number 29, in a building with 12th-century origins, with 24 rooms furnished with antique furniture and a fifth-floor rooftop terrace that the hotel says is partly covered and heated, so it opens all year. Choose it for an address on the square itself. Watch out: the pages give no room sizes or breakfast details, and the covered garage is about 500 metres away. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Rott, comfortable. A four-star hotel on Malé náměstí, which says it is a few steps from Old Town Square, with a standard room of 20 m², a superior of 25 m² and a 60 m² suite, breakfast included, and a rooftop terrace built in 2021 that guests who book direct can visit free as part of a welcome drink. Choose it for a larger room and a flexible booking: the hotel says no reservation needs prepayment and all can be cancelled free until 48 hours before arrival. Watch out: that cancellation wording still refers to pandemic measures, so confirm the terms for a December date. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Josef, comfortable. A design hotel at Rybná 20, which says it is steps from Old Town Square and Charles Bridge, opened in 2002 and designed by the architect Eva Jiřičná, with a spiral staircase and eight room types, from Mini rooms to Castle View and balcony rooms. Choose it for modern design near the market. Watch out: the Mini rooms are described as compact, and the pages give no room sizes. Check rates on Booking.com →
Republic Square and the Municipal House: between two markets
Republic Square has its own market, from 25 November to 24 December. A bed near the Municipal House puts it close by, with the Týn church, beside Old Town Square, also close by according to Motel One.
Where to stay near Republic Square
- Hotel Paris Prague, splurge. A five-star Art Nouveau hotel at U Obecního domu 1, built in 1904 and owned by the Brandejs family for three generations, with 86 rooms and suites; the Deluxe rooms are 19 to 24 m² and some have a balcony facing the Municipal House. Choose it for a dinner at home on Christmas Eve: the hotel serves a six-course menu on 24 December. Watch out: the table needs booking in advance, and its 15% three-night offer needs a minimum stay of three nights. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Motel One Prague-Florentinum, good value. At Na Poříčí 1048/30, which says Republic Square, the Týn church, Charles Bridge and Prague Castle are all close by; its rooms are 16 m² or 20 m². Choose it for a plain, central room at a chain price. Watch out: the standard room is 16 m², and the page gives no walking time to either market. Check rates on Booking.com →
Wenceslas Square and the New Town: the other big market
The Wenceslas Square market runs the full length of the season, and the square has the National Museum at its top. The three places below are on the square or within a short walk. By Mosaic House’s own count it is 12 minutes on foot to Wenceslas Square and 15 to Old Town Square.
Where to stay in the New Town
- Jalta Boutique Hotel, comfortable. At Václavské náměstí 45, on the sunny side of the square, in a post-war socialist-realist building by the architect Antonín Tenzer, with 1950s-style rooms and a Cold War museum in its fallout shelter. Choose it for a window over the market. Watch out: both offers on its site were non-refundable. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Mosaic House Design Hotel, comfortable. At Odborů 4 in Prague 2, with 94 air-conditioned rooms: standard rooms of 18 to 22 m², comfort rooms of 25 to 28 m², and superior rooms of 18 to 26 m² with a balcony or terrace. Choose it for a quieter street 12 minutes from Wenceslas Square. Watch out: it is a walk to either main market. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Sophie’s Hostel, budget. A boutique hostel at Melounova 2 with dorms, pod beds, private rooms and apartments, and a breakfast buffet from 7am to 11am. Its directions send arrivals by metro to I. P. Pavlova, on line C. Choose it for a hostel bed or a private room at the budget end. Watch out: dorm beds accept guests aged 18 to 39 only, so anyone older needs a private room or apartment, and the hostel gives no walking time to the markets.
Náměstí Míru and Vinohrady: an earlier, quieter market
The Peace Square market is the first to open, on 20 November, and it closes on 24 December. Vinohrady is residential, with cafés and tall apartment houses, and the old centre is a walk of 23 minutes or more from Hotel Anna, or a short tram or metro ride. Hotel Anna’s own page gives walking times from its door: 7 minutes (500 m) to Peace Square, 23 minutes (1.4 km) to the lower end of Wenceslas Square, and 35 minutes to both Old Town Square (2.4 km) and Republic Square (2.3 km).
Where to stay in Vinohrady
- Hotel Anna, good value. A 26-room hotel at Budečská 17 in Prague 2, with breakfast buffet included from 7:30am to 10am, a tram stop about 150 metres away and a 20% discount for booking direct. Choose it for a 7-minute walk to the Peace Square market, by the hotel’s own count. Watch out: the hotel’s air conditioning is a paid extra available from April to October, and reception is open 8am to 9pm, so tell it if you arrive late. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Le Palais Art Hotel Prague, comfortable. A Belle Époque building at U Zvonařky 1 with ceilings by the painter Luděk Marold, who lived and worked there, 72 rooms and suites, and a restaurant and wellness centre. The hotel says the Vinohrady Theatre is just around the corner and Wenceslas Square is within walking distance. Choose it for a grand building and a quiet street. Watch out: the Economy rooms are described as “old standard”, and garage parking carries an extra fee. Check rates on Booking.com →
Malá Strana and the castle side: a calmer night across the river
Malá Strana lies across the river from the Old Town, below the castle. It is quieter at night, and the cost is a walk over Charles Bridge or a tram ride to reach the markets. Hotel Malá Strana’s own panel gives 15 minutes on foot to Charles Bridge and 20 to Prague Castle.
Where to stay in Malá Strana
- Aria Hotel Prague, splurge. A hotel of 51 rooms and suites, 29 Deluxe, 16 Junior Suites and 6 Signature Suites, on four floors themed on music, beside the Vrtba Garden, with breakfast included daily from 7am to 11am. Choose it for a luxury base in Malá Strana. Watch out: the pages give no distance to the markets, which are across the river. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Hotel Malá Strana, good value. A hotel at Melnická 9 in a historical building, about 50 metres from the Újezd tram stop, with breakfast included from 7:30am to 10am and a 20% direct-booking benefit. Choose it for a quiet street and a tram to the centre. Watch out: it is 15 minutes on foot to Charles Bridge by its own count, so the Old Town Square market is further than that. How to book Prague at Christmas
- Book early and read the terms. We did not check live availability or prices, so we quote none; the tiers reflect category and facilities, not rates. Jalta’s offers were non-refundable, while Hotel Rott advertises free cancellation until 48 hours before arrival.
- Count the fee. The 50 CZK a night is usually added at the hotel, not in the online price. Check whether the quote includes it.
- Choose by how you will move. On Old Town Square you walk everywhere; in the New Town Mosaic House counts 12 and 15 minutes on foot to the two big squares; in Vinohrady or Malá Strana you use a tram or the metro.
- Check the market date. Peace Square opens on 20 November and the two big markets on 28 November, so an early visit means only the smaller ones.
- Check room size. Several rooms here are 16 to 20 m², so look at the room type if you have luggage.
- Compare totals. Hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and direct booking versus online agencies covers when to go direct. Hotel Anna and Hotel Malá Strana each advertise 20% off for booking on their own sites, and Hotel Paris advertises 15% off a three-night stay.

Frequently asked questions
When are the Prague Christmas markets in 2026?
The organiser's pages give 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 for both the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets, daily 10am to 10pm. Smaller markets close on Christmas Eve: Náměstí Míru runs 20 November to 24 December and Republic Square 25 November to 24 December. Prague City Tourism said its own 2026/2027 information would appear in late November.
What is the best area to stay for the Prague Christmas markets?
Old Town Square puts you on the biggest market, and the New Town around Wenceslas Square is beside the other one; Mosaic House counts 12 minutes on foot to Wenceslas Square and 15 to Old Town Square. Vinohrady is quieter and near the Peace Square market, and Malá Strana is a calmer night across the river, 15 minutes on foot from Charles Bridge at Hotel Malá Strana.
Is there a tourist tax in Prague in 2026?
Yes, a local fee for a stay. Prague charges 50 CZK per person for each started day of the stay except the day of arrival, which in practice means per night. Under-18s are exempt. By our arithmetic, a couple staying five nights pays 2 × 5 × 50 = 500 CZK on top of the room.
How do I get from Prague airport to the Christmas markets?
Bus 59 runs to Nádraží Veleslavín on metro line A in 17 minutes, and PID estimates about 35 minutes to the centre. One 90-minute ticket is 46 CZK in the app, 50 CZK on paper or 55 CZK by SMS. The Airport Express to the main station costs 200 CZK and PID estimates about 45 minutes.
Is there a Christmas market at Prague Castle in 2026?
We could not confirm one. Visit Czechia lists Prague Castle among the Christmas market venues but gives it no dates, and we found no 2026 announcement for a castle market, so do not plan around one. The two big markets are on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square.
Which hotels near the Prague Christmas markets can I cancel?
Hotel Rott says no reservation needs prepayment and all can be cancelled free until 48 hours before arrival, though its cancellation wording still refers to pandemic measures, so confirm it. Hotel Paris has a three-night offer with free cancellation, while both offers on the Jalta Boutique Hotel's site were non-refundable. Check each hotel's terms before booking.
