Few cities put the airport this close to the hotels. The subway from Fukuoka Airport reaches Hakata Station in 5 minutes and Tenjin in 11, for ¥260 either way, so where you stay depends on what you came for: the trains, the food stalls, the shops or the sea. Hotels in Fukuoka City add a tax of ¥200 or ¥500 a person a night. For now there is also a discount: after the Kumamoto earthquake of 28 July 2026, Fukuoka Prefecture is paying half the price of stays from 1 October to 15 December 2026, up to ¥20,000 a person, and overseas visitors can use it, though not through every booking site.

This guide covers the airport, the tax and the discount, four areas from Hakata Station to the seafront at Momochi, and eleven hotels, from a rooftop hot-spring spa at the station to a business hotel with its own hot-spring baths. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating at the start of October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

Getting in from the airport

The subway starts under the domestic terminal of Fukuoka Airport, and an adult ticket costs the same to either centre:

From Fukuoka Airport, by subway Time Adult fare
Hakata 5 minutes ¥260
Tenjin 11 minutes ¥260

From the international terminal, a free shuttle bus runs to the domestic terminal, where the subway entrances are. Between Hakata and Tenjin the subway fare is ¥210.

The hotel tax

Fukuoka City and Fukuoka Prefecture have charged an accommodation tax together since 1 April 2020: ¥200 a person a night on a room charge under ¥20,000, and ¥500 from ¥20,000. Of that, ¥50 is the prefecture’s. The Hilton, for one, collects it at the hotel on top of the room price, so a booking site’s total may not include it. See Japan’s tourist taxes in 2026 for the rest of the country.

The Kyushu recovery discount, to 15 December 2026

After the magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto on 28 July 2026, Kyushu’s prefectures are paying part of the price of trips to bring visitors back. Fukuoka Prefecture’s campaign, the Kyushu Fukko Ouen-wari Fukuoka Campaign, covers stays anywhere in the prefecture, and its FAQ says overseas visitors can use it. The prefecture says its hotels and sights are open as normal, and the Kyushu Shinkansen, damaged in the earthquake, has run its full length again since 18 September.

Fukuoka’s campaign The rules
Stays 1 October to 15 December 2026, checking out by 16 December
Bookings made on or after 24 September 2026; earlier bookings do not count
Discount 50% of the room or package price; 60% on packages with a night in Kumamoto or Kagoshima
Cap, room only ¥20,000 a person a trip, not a night
Cap, packages ¥20,000 with transport for one night, ¥30,000 for two nights or more, ¥35,000 across two prefectures or more
Not covered business trips, day use and, as a rule, the hotel tax

How to get it:

Hakata Station: the airport, the shinkansen and day trips

Hakata Station is Kyushu’s rail hub. The San’yō Shinkansen leaves here for Hiroshima, Osaka and Tokyo, the Kyushu Shinkansen for Kumamoto and Kagoshima, and the Hakata Bus Terminal stands beside the station. The airport is two subway stops one way and the Nakasu yatai two stops the other, and Canal City is about ten minutes on foot. For a first trip, and for days out of the city, this is the base that saves the most time.

Nakasu is the island between the Naka and Hakata rivers: Fukuoka’s nightlife district, with a row of yatai, the open-air food stalls, on the Naka River side. Yatai gather in three areas of the city, Nakasu, Tenjin and Nagahama, and the city’s permitted hours, setting up and packing away included, run from 5pm to 4am. Canal City Hakata, the shopping and theatre complex, and Kushida Shrine are a short walk east, towards Hakata Station.

Tenjin: shopping, and the train to Dazaifu

Tenjin is the city’s shopping and office centre, three subway stops on from Hakata. Nishitetsu trains to Dazaifu leave from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, with a change at Futsukaichi, and Tenjin is one of the city’s three yatai areas. Daimyo, west of the main street, is where the Ritz-Carlton stands.

Momochi: the sea, the tower and the dome

West of the centre, Momochi has Fukuoka Tower, the beach at Momochi Seaside Park and Mizuho PayPay Dome, home of the SoftBank Hawks baseball team. It suits a stay built around a game or a concert at the dome, or a few days by the sea; for the rest of the city, you ride in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Fukuoka?

For a first trip, Hakata Station: the subway reaches the airport in 5 minutes for ¥260, and the shinkansen and the Hakata Bus Terminal are at the door. Choose Nakasu or Canal City for the yatai food stalls on foot, Tenjin for shopping and the Nishitetsu train to Dazaifu, and Momochi for the sea and Mizuho PayPay Dome.

Is it better to stay in Hakata or Tenjin?

Hakata if you will use the trains: the shinkansen, the airport subway and the bus terminal are all at Hakata Station. Tenjin if you came to shop and eat, or to take the Nishitetsu train to Dazaifu. They are three subway stops apart, for ¥210.

How far is Fukuoka Airport from the city centre?

By subway from the domestic terminal, Hakata Station is 5 minutes away and Tenjin 11, both for an adult fare of ¥260. From the international terminal, a free shuttle bus runs to the domestic terminal first.

Is there a hotel tax in Fukuoka?

Yes. Fukuoka City and Fukuoka Prefecture together charge ¥200 a person a night on a room charge under ¥20,000 and ¥500 from ¥20,000, and have done since 1 April 2020.

Can overseas visitors use the Kyushu recovery discount in Fukuoka?

Yes. Fukuoka Prefecture's campaign FAQ says overseas visitors can use it. It takes 50% off stays in the prefecture from 1 October to 15 December 2026, up to ¥20,000 a person a trip for a room alone, on bookings made from 24 September. It works through the Japanese booking sites and travel agents on the campaign's list, or by booking a registered hotel direct; Booking.com is not on the list. It ends when the budget runs out.

Where are the yatai food stalls in Fukuoka?

In three areas: Nakasu, Tenjin and Nagahama. In Nakasu they line the Naka River side of the island. The city's permitted hours, setting up and packing away included, are 5pm to 4am.
