Melbourne keeps its best things close together, and most of them are inside a grid of streets you can cross on foot in half an hour. That changes the question. In Sydney you choose between the harbour, the beaches and the city. In Melbourne you mostly choose between the grid itself and the neighbourhoods just outside it, each a short tram ride away and each with a very different evening.
The single most useful fact for your choice is the Free Tram Zone. Every tram inside the city centre is free: the CBD grid, Docklands and the Queen Victoria Market end. Stay inside it and you can ride all day without a ticket. Stay outside it and you will want a Myki card for every trip in. Southbank, just across the river, is outside it, though you can walk into the grid in minutes.
What follows are five areas worth considering and twelve hotels across them, each with the reason to pick it and the catch. These are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in September 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.
The short answer
| If you… | Stay in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| are on a first trip | The CBD (inside the Free Tram Zone) | Free trams, the laneways, Flinders Street Station and the SkyBus terminal at Southern Cross |
| want the river and the arts precinct | Southbank | The Yarra promenade, the NGV and Arts Centre; the grid is a bridge away |
| want bars, vintage shops and a neighbourhood feel | Fitzroy | Brunswick and Gertrude Streets, a short tram north of the grid |
| want the bay and a slower pace | St Kilda | The beach, Acland Street, and little penguins at the pier at dusk |
| want shopping and leafy streets | South Yarra | Chapel Street, near the Royal Botanic Gardens |
The CBD: the grid, the laneways and free trams
For a first trip, stay here. The grid holds the laneway cafés, the arcades, Chinatown on Little Bourke Street, the Queen Victoria Market at its northern edge, and Flinders Street Station and Federation Square at its southern one. You can tram anywhere inside it for free, and the SkyBus from the airport stops at Southern Cross Station on its western edge (our airport guide compares every way in). The east end, around Parliament and Spring Street, is calmer and greener, with the Fitzroy and Treasury Gardens next door.
Where to stay in the CBD
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Park Hyatt Melbourne, splurge. 247 rooms at 1 Parliament Square on the quiet east edge of the grid, beside St Patrick’s Cathedral, with rooms looking over the gardens of East Melbourne or the cathedral. Choose it for calm and space a short walk from everything. Check rates on Booking.com →
- The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne, splurge. 257 rooms high in a tower on Lonsdale Street, open since March 2023, with the city spread out below every window. Choose it for height and the newest luxury in the city. Check rates on Booking.com →
- QT Melbourne, comfortable, design. 188 rooms at 133 Russell Street, near Chinatown and the theatres, with a rooftop terrace and the Pascale Bar & Grill. Choose it for a playful design hotel in the middle of the grid. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Laneways by Ovolo, comfortable, boutique. About 40 rooms at 19 Little Bourke Street, at the Parliament end of the theatre district, with bright Memphis-inspired interiors and the Amphlett House bistro-pub downstairs. Choose it for a small, characterful base at the quiet end of the grid.
- The Hotel Windsor, splurge, heritage. Melbourne’s only surviving purpose-built grand Victorian hotel, completed in 1884 on Spring Street opposite Parliament, with 180 rooms and 20 suites; delegates met here informally while the Australian Constitution was being finalised, and afternoon tea is still served in the grand dining room. Choose it for history you can sleep in. Watch out: this is an old hotel, and some rooms show it. Check rates on Booking.com →
- The Victoria Hotel, good value. 371 heritage rooms at 215 Little Collins Street, inside the Free Tram Zone and a walk from Town Hall, Flinders Street and Federation Square. Choose it for a central room at a sensible price. Check rates on Booking.com →
Southbank: the river and the arts
Across the Yarra from Flinders Street, Southbank has the river promenade, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Arts Centre, and the Crown complex. Its big hotels have the views the grid can’t offer, back across the water to the city. It is just outside the Free Tram Zone, but the footbridges put you in the CBD in a few minutes.
Where to stay in Southbank
- The Langham, Melbourne, splurge. 388 rooms at 1 Southgate Avenue on the river, many looking across the Yarra to the skyline, with an indoor pool and the Chuan Spa. Choose it for a classic grand hotel on the promenade. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Crown Towers Melbourne, splurge. 482 rooms in the Crown complex, with city or bay views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Choose it for full-service luxury, with the complex’s restaurants downstairs. Watch out: it sits inside a casino complex, which is not everyone’s idea of calm. Check rates on Booking.com →
Fitzroy: bars, books and vintage shops
A short tram ride north of the grid, Fitzroy is Melbourne’s inner-city neighbourhood at its most itself: Brunswick and Gertrude Streets, vintage and record shops, small bars, Victorian terraces and a great deal of good coffee. Stay here if you would rather live in a neighbourhood for a few days than look at one.
Where to stay in Fitzroy
- The StandardX, Melbourne, comfortable, design. 125 rooms at 62 Rose Street, open since August 2024, with a guests-only rooftop bar called On Top and a Thai restaurant, BANG. Choose it for a design hotel in the thick of the inner north. Check rates on Booking.com →
St Kilda: the bay, the pier and the penguins
St Kilda sits on the bay about half an hour’s tram ride south of the city. It has the beach, the old cake shops of Acland Street, Luna Park, and at dusk the little penguins that live on the breakwater at the end of the pier, free to watch from the boardwalk. It is the right base for a slower trip, and a long way from a business trip.
Where to stay in St Kilda
- The Prince, comfortable, boutique. 39 rooms at 2 Acland Street, on the corner where Fitzroy Street meets the sea, in an art-deco building that reopened after a two-year revamp, with a pub on the ground floor and a band room upstairs. Choose it for the bay on your doorstep. Watch out: it is also a live-music venue, so ask for a quiet room if you sleep lightly. Check rates on Booking.com →
South Yarra: Chapel Street and the gardens
South-east of the city, South Yarra is leafy, well-dressed and built around Chapel Street’s shops and restaurants, with the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Tan running track on its city side. It is a tram or train ride from the CBD and quieter in the evenings.
Where to stay in South Yarra
- The Como Melbourne – MGallery, comfortable. 111 rooms and suites, some of them loft penthouses, with a rooftop pool, a short walk from Chapel Street. Choose it for a polished base in the smart end of town. Check rates on Booking.com →
- The Olsen Melbourne – Art Series, comfortable. On Chapel Street itself, with suites hung with the work of the Australian painter John Olsen and a glass-bottomed pool. Choose it for a hotel that doubles as a gallery. Check rates on Booking.com →

Getting around from your hotel
- From the airport: there is still no airport train; the rail link is not expected before the 2030s. The SkyBus runs to Southern Cross Station in about 30 to 45 minutes and keeps running through the night, and you can book SkyBus tickets ahead on Klook. With heavy bags, a pre-booked car with Welcome Pickups takes you to the door.
- Inside the grid: trams are free. Don’t tap on.
- Beyond it: you need a Myki card, bought and topped up at stations, machines and 7-Eleven stores; always tap on the moment you leave the Free Tram Zone. Our Melbourne transport guide covers the details.
If you are coming from Sydney, here is where to stay there. For what to do once you have unpacked, see our list of things to do in Melbourne.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Melbourne for first-timers?
The CBD, inside the Free Tram Zone, where every tram is free. The grid holds the laneways, arcades, Chinatown, the Queen Victoria Market and Flinders Street Station, and the SkyBus from the airport stops at Southern Cross Station on its western edge.
Is Southbank inside Melbourne's Free Tram Zone?
No. The Free Tram Zone covers the CBD grid, Docklands and the Queen Victoria Market end, but not Southbank. Southbank's hotels are a short walk over the Yarra footbridges into the zone; for trams beyond it you need a Myki card.
Is St Kilda a good place to stay in Melbourne?
For a slower trip, yes. St Kilda has the beach, Acland Street, Luna Park and the little penguins that come ashore at the pier breakwater at dusk, free to watch. The city is about half an hour away by tram.
Is Fitzroy a good area to stay in Melbourne?
Yes, if you want neighbourhood life over sightseeing convenience: Brunswick and Gertrude Streets have vintage shops, small bars and cafés, and the CBD is a short tram ride south. The StandardX, which opened in August 2024, is its best-known hotel.
How do I get from Melbourne Airport to my hotel?
There is still no airport train. The SkyBus runs to Southern Cross Station in about 30 to 45 minutes, day and night, and a taxi, rideshare or pre-booked car takes you door to door. Southern Cross is on the edge of the Free Tram Zone, so onward trams in the CBD are free.
Are these Melbourne hotels reviewed first-hand?
No. They are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and checked as operating in September 2026. No hotel pays to be included.
