- Frequently asked questions
The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix takes over Albert Park from Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 April 2027, according to the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, and the hotel question is mostly a transport question. We found no Melbourne city hotel tax to report, and Victoria’s short-stay levy is aimed at rentals, so what shapes the price is the calendar, parking and how you get to the gates.
This guide covers the 2027 dates as the organisers have published them, five areas weighed by how you reach Albert Park, 12 hotels, and the fares and routes that matter. The organisers’ 2027 transport plan was not clearly separated from last year’s in early November, so we label what ran in 2026. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating in early November 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.
The short answer
| If you want… | Stay in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| the shortest trip to the gates | Albert Park | Pullman Melbourne Albert Park is on Queens Road and calls itself the closest hotel to the Grand Prix |
| the beach and the pier | St Kilda | Fitzroy Street, where the organisers put Gate 10, is St Kilda’s main street |
| river views and a walk to Flinders Street | Southbank | The St Kilda Road trams to the gates start at Flinders Street Station, across the Yarra |
| trams and the airport bus | The CBD and Southern Cross | The organisers’ page has an express tram from Spencer Street to Gates 1 and 2, and SkyBus stops at Southern Cross |
| shops, cafés and a quieter night | South Yarra | Chapel Street is at the door, but we found no official route from here to the circuit |

The 2027 dates: what is published
The organisers’ news page of 16 September 2026 says the 2027 event runs from Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 April, with Australia’s first Formula 1 Sprint Race. Formula 1’s own calendar lists the Australian round as round 3, on 2 to 4 April.
| What | When |
|---|---|
| The event | Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 April 2027 |
| Practice 1 and Sprint Qualifying | Friday 2 April |
| Sprint Race and Qualifying | Saturday 3 April |
| The Grand Prix | Sunday 4 April |
The organisers’ schedule page adds that the full schedule will be released closer to the Grand Prix, so session times can still move. Its news page gave 6 October 2026 as the general sale date and said single-day Park Passes start at $45 for adults. For comparison, the 2026 Grand Prix ran from Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 March, according to the Premier of Victoria.
Two things about the calendar change the hotel bill. The Easter long weekend comes just before: Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March 2027, according to Business Victoria. And the organisers say the event falls during Victorian school holidays.
Getting to Albert Park
The organisers’ Getting Here page says there is strictly no public parking at the circuit and that travel is free on trams and trains between the city and Albert Park for valid ticket holders. As of 2 November 2026 it did not name a year, and the page still invited fans to register their interest for ticket and event details, so we treat it as the likely pattern. The dated record is the Premier of Victoria’s release of 3 March 2026, which we label below as last year’s.
What the organisers’ page describes.
- Southern Cross Station: a Spencer Street express tram to Gates 1 and 2.
- Flagstaff Station: a dedicated shuttle tram to Gate 3.
- Flinders Street Station: St Kilda Road trams stopping at Gates 5, 8, 9 and 10.
- Anzac Station: exit 3, then an eight-minute walk to Gate 5. Train travel is free between State Library, Town Hall and Anzac stations for event ticket holders.
- Taxis and rideshare: ranks at Gates 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 10, with Gate 10 on Fitzroy Street.
What ran in 2026. For the 2026 Grand Prix the Premier of Victoria’s office said that more than 130 extra train services and 5,000 additional trams would run, that event tickets included free trams to Albert Park and free trains between Town Hall, State Library and Anzac, and that late-night services would run until 1.30am. Lakeside Drive and the surrounding Albert Park roads were closed, with extra restrictions on Spencer Street, Bourke Street and St Kilda Road, and extra buses ran from Crown Casino to Gates 1, 2 and 3 from Friday to Sunday. Routes 606, 246, 600, 922 and 923 continued as normal bus services. We have not seen a 2027 equivalent.
| Fare | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Free Tram Zone | Free | Trams only, in the central city and Docklands |
| myki Money, two hours, Zones 1 and 2 | $2.85 | Half-price period |
| myki Money, daily cap | $5.70 | Half-price period; $11.40 before it |
| SkyBus, adult one way | $25.90 | Not covered by the half-price discount |
The half-price period on Victorian trains, trams and buses runs until 1 January 2027, and the Victorian Government’s page mentions no extension, so the fares in April 2027 may differ. Contactless cards, phones and watches work for full-fare travel at the same fares as myki. From the airport, SkyBus runs a turn-up-and-go service to Southern Cross Station, and a myki cannot be used on it. Our airport guide compares every way in, and getting around Melbourne covers the trams.
What pushes the price up
There is no city tax table here. We did not find a Melbourne city accommodation tax in the sources we checked, so we have not invented one. Victoria’s short-stay levy, 7.5% of the booking fee since 1 January 2025, applies to entire homes and rooms that are not the host’s main residence, and the State Revenue Office excludes hotels, motels and hostels. Australia’s 10% GST applies to hotel stays of under 28 days.
- The calendar. The event follows the Easter long weekend, 26 to 29 March, and falls in school holidays, so April weekends may be dearer than the nights around them.
- Parking. Several hotels here charge for it: Sofitel Melbourne on Collins says parking is not included, and Pullman Melbourne Albert Park lists 500 on-site spaces. The organisers say there is no public parking at the circuit, so a car is for the hotel, not the gates.
- Minimum stays. None of the hotel pages we read named a minimum stay for the event dates, but an event rule can appear at the booking step, so read the terms before you pay.
- Travel packages. The organisers list an official travel site, but we do not know what any package includes, so ask before you assume.
Albert Park: the shortest trip
Albert Park is the lakeside suburb that gives the circuit its name. A hotel on Queens Road puts you on the doorstep of the event, with the road closures and crowds that come with it.
Where to stay in Albert Park
How the hotel links work: a hotel’s name goes to its own website. “Check rates” opens it on Booking.com through our partner Stay22, which pays us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you.
- Pullman Melbourne Albert Park, comfortable. A five-star at 65 Queens Road overlooking Albert Park Lake, with 169 rooms, classic rooms of 30 m² and lake-view rooms and suites. The hotel calls itself the closest hotel to the Australian Grand Prix and lists 500 on-site parking spaces. Choose it for the shortest walk to the circuit. Watch out: its page still says the race “occurs in March every year”, so ignore that for 2027, and expect it to sell first. Check rates on Booking.com →
St Kilda: the beach and the pier
St Kilda trades convenience for the bay. The organisers put Gate 10 on Fitzroy Street, St Kilda’s main street, with a taxi rank and a rideshare bay there, and their St Kilda Road trams stop at Gate 10 on the way from Flinders Street. We have not timed any St Kilda journey, so check the Journey Planner.
Where to stay in St Kilda
- The Prince, good value, boutique. At 2 Acland Street, with rooms from a Boutique room of about 14 m² to a Superior room of 26 m² with a balcony over Fitzroy Street and across Port Phillip Bay, and a live-music Bandroom on site. Choose it for the beach and the pier at the door. Watch out: the entry rooms are small and the building is a live-music venue, so ask about noise if you sleep lightly. Check rates on Booking.com →
Southbank: across the river
Southbank has the river promenade, the arts precinct and the Crown complex. It is across the Yarra from Flinders Street Station, where the organisers’ page starts the St Kilda Road trams to Gates 5, 8, 9 and 10. We have no official journey time from any Southbank hotel, so test it.
Where to stay in Southbank
- The Langham, Melbourne, splurge. A five-star hotel at 1 Southgate Avenue on the river, with Club rooms, suites and a terrace room among its room types. Choose it for a classic grand hotel on the river. Watch out: Club rooms and suites are sold separately from the standard rooms, so compare like with like. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Crown Towers Melbourne, splurge. On the Yarra at 8 Whiteman Street, with Deluxe King rooms of 43 m² and bay or city views, and Nobu and Rockpool among the restaurants. Choose it for full-service luxury and space. Watch out: it sits inside a casino and entertainment complex, and in 2026 the extra Grand Prix buses to Gates 1, 2 and 3 left from Crown Casino, so check whether a 2027 service repeats it. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Quay West Suites Melbourne, comfortable, apartment-style. One-, two- and three-bedroom apartments at 26 Southgate Avenue, beside Hamer Hall and the National Gallery of Victoria, with a magnesium mineral pool. The hotel’s page calls it a stroll to the sporting stadiums. Choose it for a kitchen and room to spread out. Watch out: “a stroll” is the hotel’s wording, not an official time. Check rates on Booking.com →
The CBD and Southern Cross: trams and the airport bus
The east end of the grid is the grand, quiet part of the city, with Parliament, Spring Street and the Paris end of Collins Street. Southern Cross is the transport end: the SkyBus terminus, the regional trains and, on the organisers’ page, the Spencer Street express tram to Gates 1 and 2. The Free Tram Zone covers the central city and Docklands, so the first tram you catch costs nothing.
Where to stay in the CBD and at Southern Cross
- The Hotel Windsor, splurge, heritage. A heritage-listed grand hotel at 111 Spring Street, established in 1883, with 180 rooms and signature suites, and an afternoon tea that is still served. Choose it for history you can sleep in, at the edge of the Free Tram Zone. Watch out: it is an old building, and rooms differ, so read the room type. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, splurge. 363 rooms and suites at 25 Collins Street, which the hotel calls the Paris end of Collins Street, with room types facing the bay and river, the park or the city. Choose it for a polished base a short walk from Flinders Street Station. Watch out: parking is not included, and view rooms are a separate category from the entry room. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Mövenpick Hotel Melbourne on Spencer, comfortable. 172 rooms and suites on floors 1 to 6 of the Premier Tower at 160 Spencer Street, with Southern Cross Station and tram routes on the doorstep, and an outdoor pool. The hotel says it is in the Free Tram Zone and close to the SkyBus terminal. Choose it for the airport bus and the Spencer Street tram together. Watch out: the express tram is last year’s pattern as far as we can confirm, so check the 2027 plan. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Quest Docklands, good value. 133 serviced apartments at 750 Bourke Street, from a 28 m² studio to 54 m² one-bedroom apartments, with their own kitchen facilities, and a train station listed 0.4 km away. Choose it for self-catering on a long stay. Watch out: it overlooks Marvel Stadium, so expect crowds on event nights there. Check rates on Booking.com →
- YHA Melbourne Central, budget. A hostel at 562 Flinders Street with a 24-hour reception, private rooms and co-living rooms, a rooftop with a barbecue, and a short walk from Southern Cross by the hostel’s description. Choose it for the lowest price near the station. Watch out: co-living rooms are for guests over 18, and it is a licensed venue with events such as trivia nights. Check rates on Booking.com →
South Yarra: shops and cafés
South Yarra is the Chapel Street district south of the Yarra. The organisers’ Getting Here page does not name it, so we cannot give an official route to the circuit. Work out the journey in the Journey Planner before you book.
Where to stay in South Yarra
- Art Series The Olsen, comfortable. A boutique hotel at 637-641 Chapel Street with a 24-hour reception, named for the painter John Olsen, with penthouses that the hotel says have sweeping skyline views. Choose it for an art-hotel base on Chapel Street. Watch out: its page says the glass-bottomed pool is currently unavailable and that South Yarra’s redevelopment at times causes excess noise. Check rates on Booking.com →
- Ovolo Melbourne South Yarra, comfortable. A 1970s-themed boutique hotel of 123 rooms at 234 Toorak Road, with 13 to 14 m² Snug rooms, 20 m² Groovy Studios and flexible cancellation on direct bookings. The hotel says tram and train stations are just moments away. Choose it for a design hotel with a bar. Watch out: the entry rooms are small, so check the size. Check rates on Booking.com →
How to book Melbourne for the Grand Prix
- Book by session. Pick the nights around the days you hold a ticket for, and compare the hotel’s total, parking included.
- Walk or ride. For a short trip to the gates, choose Albert Park; for a tram, choose the Spencer Street or St Kilda Road services from the CBD; for a late night out, plan your way home before you go.
- Check the fares at the time. The half-price period ends on 1 January 2027 unless it is extended, so the daily cap may double.
- Read the room. Entry rooms vary from a 13 m² Snug room at Ovolo to 43 m² at Crown Towers.
- Compare totals. Our hotel booking sites compared goes through where to book, and where to stay in Melbourne covers the rest of the city, with the Australian Open guide for January.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Australian Grand Prix in 2027?

The full schedule had not been released in early November 2026.
Where is the best place to stay for the Melbourne Grand Prix?
Albert Park is the shortest trip: Pullman Melbourne Albert Park calls itself the closest hotel to the race. St Kilda has the beach and Gate 10 on Fitzroy Street, Southbank and the CBD are a tram ride away, and Southern Cross has an express tram to Gates 1 and 2 on the organisers' page.
How do you get to Albert Park for the Grand Prix?
The organisers say there is no public parking and that travel is free on trams and trains between the city and Albert Park for valid ticket holders: Spencer Street express trams to Gates 1 and 2, a shuttle from Flagstaff to Gate 3, St Kilda Road trams from Flinders Street to Gates 5, 8, 9 and 10, and Anzac Station with an eight-minute walk to Gate 5. The page names no year, so check the 2027 plan.
Is there a hotel tax in Melbourne?
We found no Melbourne city accommodation tax. Victoria's short-stay levy, 7.5% of the booking fee, applies to entire homes and rooms that are not the host's main residence, and hotels, motels and hostels are excluded. Australia's 10% GST applies to hotel stays of under 28 days.
