Kyoto’s maples turn late, and lately later still. The Kyoto observatory’s sample maple counts as fully red on 5 December in a normal year, by the normals for 1991 to 2020; in 2025 it turned on 10 December, and in 2024 not until 20 December, the latest on record. The temples plan their autumn around the second half of November: for 2026, Eikan-do’s autumn opening runs from 11 November to 6 December, with its light-up from 20 November, and Tofuku-ji’s autumn hours run from 14 November to 6 December. If those are your weeks, book the room now, with free cancellation.

This guide covers the dates to aim for, the 2026 openings, hours and fees at four of the best-known temples, five areas matched to the leaves you can reach from each, twelve hotels to start with, and Kyoto’s hotel tax. The hotels are researched picks, chosen for location, what each property publishes and consistent guest feedback, and each was checked as operating at the start of October 2026. No hotel pays to appear here.

When to go: the dates to aim for

By the Kyoto Local Meteorological Office’s count, for its sample trees:

Maple fully red Ginkgo fully yellow
Normal (1991–2020) 5 December 24 November
2025 10 December 25 November
Latest on record 20 December (2024) 7 December (1982)

The observatory’s date is the day its sample tree has turned almost entirely. Gardens with many trees, in sun and in shade, colour over several weeks, and the Japan Weather Association gives Arashiyama’s usual best as mid-November to early December. For 2026, its first forecast, on 1 October, expects Arashiyama at its best from about 13 November; Weathernews, on 3 September, put Arashiyama’s peak around 24 November. Both expect a warm autumn to hold the colour back: Weathernews says later than normal across Japan, the Japan Weather Association normal or later.

Aim for the last ten days of November, and stay four or five nights rather than two, so that an early or a late year still overlaps with your stay.

The 2026 openings, hours and fees

The temples publish their autumn arrangements on their own sites, and several have changed this year:

Okazaki and Nanzen-ji: Eikan-do on foot

Okazaki is the cultural quarter around Heian Shrine, at the foot of the Higashiyama hills, and it puts the eastern temples on foot. Eikan-do and Nanzen-ji are neighbours, and the Philosopher’s Path runs for about 2 kilometres beside a canal from Ginkaku-ji to Nyakuoji Shrine. Staying here lets you reach Eikan-do as it opens and walk back after the light-up. Keage and Higashiyama stations, on the Tozai subway line, take you downtown in a few minutes.

Gion and Higashiyama: the old city, by day and at night

Gion and Higashiyama are the Kyoto of the postcards, and in leaf season they are also the most crowded. Kodai-ji, off Nene-no-michi near the Ninenzaka slope, stays open until 10pm for its autumn night opening, and Kiyomizu-dera, at the top of Sannenzaka, looks out over a slope of maples from its wooden stage. Staying here lets you walk out at dawn, before the tour groups, and back to the lanes after dark. The Keihan line at Gion-Shijo and the Tozai line at Higashiyama are the nearest stations.

Kyoto Station: Tofuku-ji, and plenty of rooms

Kyoto Station has a large cluster of hotels around it, and in the leaf season that matters: when the old city is full, there are often still rooms here. It is also the closest base for Tofuku-ji, one stop south of Kyoto Station on the JR Nara line; the Keihan line stops there too. JR runs to Arashiyama and to Nara, and the Karasuma subway line runs north through downtown. The trade-off is that the eastern temples are a ride away.

Where to stay at Kyoto Station

Downtown: the river and the most choice

Downtown, between Karasuma and the Kamo River, has the widest choice of hotels and restaurants, with the Takase canal along Kiyamachi and the banks of the Kamo River for an evening walk. The Tozai line runs east from Sanjo Keihan to Higashiyama and Keage for the eastern temples, and the Keihan line runs south to Tofuku-ji. If the areas beside the famous temples are full, this is where to look first.

Arashiyama: the river and the hills

Arashiyama, on the city’s western edge, is where the river leaves the hills, and in autumn the slopes above Togetsukyo Bridge turn in patches of red and gold. Day-trippers fill it by late morning; staying the night gives you the riverbank early and late. JR’s Sagano line, the Hankyu line and the Randen tram all reach it.
